Abstract

The Gpr1 G-protein coupled receptor protein is used as a target for antifungals against pathogenic fungi. The invention constitutes an assay for selecting compounds that modulate or decrease the sugar-receptor function of GPR1 in hyphae forming yeast. Hyphae forming yeast strains which are deleted for one allele of the GPR1 gene are used to screen for inhibitors of the Gpr1 protein. The invention also features strains of originally filamentous virulent yeast transformed to render said yeast to be nonfilamentous and avirulent to control fungal infectious diseases.
