Abstract

The endless cable tie fastener device (1) is disclosed. The device is and endless plastic strap (1) to be cut to any desired length with locking assembly (4,5) incorporated into the strap which does not protrude beyond the width of the strap. This enables the off cuts to be re-used and any desired length of cable fastening device (4,5) can be produced in a roll instead of individual single use devises.

Description

CABLE TIE FASTENER The present invention relates to a cable tie fastener and in particularly to a plurality of cable tie fastener located on a single strip.

It is known to provide one-piece plastics cable ties. These include a head having an opening there through with a pawl located therein. Extending from the head is a strap with plurality of teeth. The strap is inserted into the opening in the head with the cables to be bundled surrounded by the strap and the strap pulled tight around the cables and the pawl locks onto the teeth of the strap. Examples of such prior art are US 4,287644,US 5,267,373 and

US 6,044,524.

The prior art cable ties are formed of a predetermined length; hence different sizes of cable tie fasteners are required for different diameters of cable bundles. Further because of the bulbous head and the movable pawl located in the head require complicated dies and excessive use of plastics. Additionally the movable pawl can sometimes fail.

The present invention seeks to ameliorate these disadvantages by providing cable tie fasteners comprising a strap of substantially constant thickness, comprising a first strap section having transversely extending teeth there on, a second strap section having a slot extending through the strap and locking means formed in said slot, said first and second strap sections alternate along the length of the strap, such that in use the strap is cut to form the required length of cable tie fastener and the first strap section is inserted into the required slot and the teeth engage with said locking means in said locking means in said slot to lock said cable tie fastener. The teeth run perpendicular to the length of the strap.

Preferably the teeth on the first strap section are located on both sides of the first strap section.

The present invention will now be described with reference to the accompanying drawings in which:

Figure 1 illustrates, schematically, a view of a section of the cable tie fastener according to one embodiment of the present invention;

Figure 2 illustrates, schematically, a detailed view of the cable tie fastener shown in figure 1 ;

Figure 3 illustrates, schematically, an enlarged longitudinal cross sectional view of the cable tie fastener shown in figure 2, taken in the direction of arrows iii,

Figure 4 illustrates, schematically, an enlarged longitudinal cross sectional view of the cable tie fastener shown in figure 2, taken in the direction of arrows iv, and

Figure 5 schematically, a view of a section of the cable tie fastener according to another embodiment of the present inventions As shown in figures 1 ,2,3 & 4 the cable tie fastener (1) comprises a first strap section (4) having rows of teeth (2) and a second strap section (5) having a slot (3).The strap sections (4&5) alternate along the length of the tie fastener (1). The cable tie fastener is produced in plastics in any desired lengths and can be stored in rolls. The slots (3) run parallel with the cable tie fastener and teeth (2) are angled across the cable tie fastener perpendicular to the slots and main body of the cable tie fastener (1). This slot is sufficient such that the entire width of the first strap section (4) of the cable tie fastener (1) can pass through the slot (3). Alternately the slot could be accurate and the first strap section could be flexible to allow the first strap section to be bent to conform to the to the shape of the slot. On site to use the cable tie fastener, one simple cuts the cable tie fastener (1) to the required length, encircles the cables to be bundled with the cable tie fastener(1) and pushes the first strap section (4) through the slot (3). The slot (3) has locking means located therein (8), which engage with the teeth (2) to resist the withdrawal of the first strap section (4) from the slot

(3). As shown in figures 3&4, the teeth (2) are located on both sides of the first strap section (4) and have a sloped front surface (6) and a step or shoulder (7) as its rear surface. Additionally, the locking means of the slot (3), as shown in figure 4, can be simply formed by the slot (3) being tapered in profile to form a substantially V-Shaped slot running across the strap section (5), with a narrow egress (8), wherein the shoulder (7) of the teeth (2) lock behind the narrow egress (8), to resist removal of the first strap section (4) from the slot (3). Additionally, suitable shoulders or teeth could be formed in the slot and so shaped as to allow the first strap section (4) to be forced through the slot (3), but to resist the removal of the first strap section (4) from the slot (3). These teeth or shoulders could have a sloped front surface with a flat surface or shoulder as their rear surface, to allow the sloped front surfaces or the teeth of the first strap section to ride over the sloped front surfaces or the teeth of the slot, with the respective shoulders locking to prevent withdrawal of the first strap section from the slot.

Additionally as shown in figure 5, the slot 9 could be substantially I shaped to conform to the exact cross section of the strap (10) which has raised side edges (1 1) to strengthen the strap (10)

The cable tie fastener therefore has the following advantage:

a. no hinges or moving parts; b. more efficient use of plastics, as no bulbous head is required; c. produced as a continuous length and as such the required length of fastener can be cut on site; and d. no cumbersome head and locking devices.

It should be obvious to people skilled in the art that modifications and alterations can be made to the above describes embodiments without departing from the scope or the spirit of the present invention.

Claims

THE CLAIMS DEFINING THE INVENTION ARE AS FOLLOWS:
1) The cable tie fastener device comprises of a strap of constant thickness without locking device to protrude greater than the thickness of the cable tie fastening device.
2) The length of the cable tie fastener device can be cut to any length required and is not limited to a predetermined length for each application.
3) The excess off cuts can be used for further cable tie fastening activities.
4) The cable tie fastening device can be kept in rolls of cable tie fastening device rather than individual units.
5) The cable tie fastener device of any one of claims 1 to 4 shall not require hinges and or moving parts.
6) A cable tie fastener device substantially as herein described with reference to the accompanying drawings.
