Abstract

A discharge lamp operating circuit, wherein a smoothing capacitor (C2) and a switch element (SW3) are connected in series between one end on the discharge lamp (LMP) side of a reactor (L1) and one end of a converter (COMV). The switch element (SW3) is open to remove the smoothing capacitor (C2) from the circuit in the initial stage of lighting of the discharge lamp (LMP) to thereby increase voltage V2 at the connecting point between the reactor (L1) and the smoothing capacitor (C2) to increase a response speed to load variations when current through the lamp (LMP) is interrupted, and the switch element (SW3) is turned on after current flowing through the lamp (LMP) is stabilized to insert the smoothing capacitor (C2) into the circuit.
