Definitions
- the present invention relates to an information system for wireless devices, in particular, a system for distributing the processing of the data between a wireless device such as a cellular telephone and the .substation and server.
- the operation of the routes making up a public transport system are typically governed by a time-table specifying the time that a train or vehicle should be at a particular location.
- a time-table specifying the time that a train or vehicle should be at a particular location.
- People wishing to use a train or other mode of public transport can refer to the time-table and get to the departure point some short time ahead of the time designated for the train's departure, thereby avoiding an unnecessary wait.
- people who have used a time-table will nevertheless have to wait and therefore have their time wasted. It will be seen that the same considerations apply to other time-table based transport systems such as underground or subway trains, buses, trams, etc.
- a known mobile telephone service allows users having WAP (Wireless Application Protocol) enabled telephones to access a Web page showing both time-tables and any deviations from the time-tables. This allows the user to check state of the route he wishes to take before he sets off to the departure point; if the, train is delayed, he may postpone going to the departure point and use his time more efficiently.
- WAP Wireless Application Protocol
- the Web site must naturally be written in WML (Wireless Markup Language).
- WML contains different and less complex formatting information as HTML (Hyper Text Markup Language), since many mobile devices have monochrome, small area, and low resolution screens. Because of its simplicity in comparison to HTML, WML is more suitable for being transmitted to mobile devices, since the bandwidth available to a mobile device is typically far less than that available to a hardwire connected device.
- the object of the present invention is to provide a convenient and effective system for the provision of time-table data on a mobile device.
- a method of providing time-table information on a wireless device comprising the steps of
- a remote information server which includes a database including verification and/or amendment data, and requesting verification and/or amendment data relating the presented data such that the presented data may be verified and/or amended
- time-table data retrieved from the wireless device memory is stored in the fonn of a time-table database and retrieved in response to a query generated by the user.
- the time-table database includes a set of train identifiers, station identifiers and time value identifiers, such that the time that a train shall be available at a station is ascertainable.
- the verification and/or amendment data is held on the information server in a database including a set of train identifiers, and deviation values corresponding to the magnitude of delay that a particular train is suffering, and the request from the wireless device includes one or more train identifiers, and the information server provides the associated deviation values, and these deviations values are combined with the appropriate time values held in the time-table database to generate the amended data.
- the amendment and/or verification data may include a status field capable of indicating that the train has been cancelled.
- a wireless device as herein defined.
- an information server as herein defined.
- the memory may be any type of persistence storage mechanism local to the device, i.e. including removable memory packs and the like.
- time-table data on the wireless device itself greatly reduces the amount of data that it is necessary to transmit to the phone, thus increasing the reliability speed and convenience with which the user may obtain time-table data, but nevertheless ensures that the user can also check the most up-to-date status relating to particular trains available.
- the time-table application program formulates the user's query, interrogates the timetable database, and displays time-table data without the necessity of transferring data from a remote location, useful information can be provided for the user at a high speed whatever transmission bandwidth is available, and further that by using verification and/or amendment data a reduced set retrieved from the database, even the speed of transmission of the data necessary to update the time-table data is kept to a convenient size.
- the generation of the display by the time-table generation program using the verification and/or amendment data avoids the need to transmit formatting information.
- a mobile device 10 includes a non- volatile memory 14, a processor 16, a keypad 22, a display screen 18, and receiving and transmitting circuitry 20.
- the mobile device 10 is capable of receiving signals from a base station 25, and transmitting signals to the base station.
- the base station 25 is linked to an update server 30 by an appropriate interface and network.
- the non- volatile memory 14 of the mobile device includes a timetable for the relevant area.
- the time-table is stored in a compressed form, which is inflated by the time-table application, and the inflated form may be stored in volatile memory.
- the time-table comprises a database 12 of train reference numbers relating particular trains, associated routes and associated arrival or departure times from each station they visit.
- Each train has an associated start time, an associated route that consists of a list of references to the stations visited, and an associated time set that consists of a list of elapsed times since start that a train will arrive and/or depart from a station.
- each train is associated with the days of the week on which it will run, and a special status code allowing general information storage.
- the individually identified train is specific to one journey, that is, the actual train will be represented by different identifiers for the different individual journeys that it makes.
- the mobile device 10 has a train time application program installed upon it, which controls the interrogation of the time-table database 12 stored on the mobile device, the display of time-table information, and the connection and data transfer with the update server 30.
- the display provides the user with a menu of options, prompting the user to choose to view the next trains departing between two stations. Separate views are available to display journeys in both directions. The journeys will be the next chronological journeys based on current time and date, which the user can reset.
- the menu also allows the user to change the stations between which journeys will be displayed. Although default stations are displayed on first use, the user is able to choose to change the default settings of one or both of these stations as desired, with the new default values held in non- volatile memory. The user can also change the time and day for which the journeys will be commuted and displayed, allowing the user to look ahead at future journeys. The user enters his choice via the keypad 22, or other device specific mechanism, to display the item of interest.
- the train time application uses this query to interrogate the time-table database, and retrieve and display the departure and arrival times that match the query's conditions.
- the queries could be couched in slightly different terms, for example, to find which train should be taken to reach a particular station by a specified time.
- the time-table application could of course be configured to also support more sophisticated queries and features; for example, the two stations selected by the user may involve taking more than one train.
- update function Associated with the retrieved and displayed departure and arrival time results is an update function.
- the update functions could be activated for example by a graphically displayed button beside each result, or check boxes by each result and an execute button to carry out the update function on the results by the checked boxes.
- the time-table application causes the mobile device 10 to establish a communication link with the update server 30 via the base station 25.
- the update server includes a processor 32 and memory 36, and an update information database 34 stored on the memory.
- the update information database includes the train reference numbers, and a status code and deviation value associated with each train reference numbers.
- the time-table application sends the train reference numbers to the update server 30 and requests the deviation values for these train reference numbers.
- the update server replies by sending the train reference numbers together with the status and deviations values for each train reference number.
- the time-table application then calculates the arrival and departure times for the journeys identified by the user's query and subsequently selected by him to be updated, and displays the new time- table for the routes selected to be updated, together with the status.
- the status may, for example, indicate that a train has been cancelled, whether a particular train has been confirmed as running on time with no deviation, or simply that no update information has been received. If the journey that the user wishes to take involves more taking more than one train, it may be that the train on an early leg of the journey is delayed such the connection with a particular subsequent train cannot be made.
- the time-table application can be configured to recognise this situation and modify the request to the update server accordingly.
- time-table application could be implemented in many suitable programming languages in ways known to those skilled in the art.
- a suitable implementation is to hold the time-table data as a set of Java TM classes, and the time-table application as a set of Java TM classes.
- the implementation of the network protocol is well known to those skilled in the art; for example, an HTTP-based protocol such as SOAP (Simple Object Access Protocol) would be suitable.
- the update database could conveniently be generated automatically from information already available to the train operators who will record any deviations to train journeys as they become apparent.
- the update database could hold status and deviation values for each station visited by a particular train. The user could then be informed if, for example the train was not going to stop at a particular station on the journey. Such a function would though increase the amount of information that was required to be sent to the mobile device.
- the time-table database held on the mobile device could be loaded into the memory via a cable port, before the mobile device has been sold, or via the user's PC at a time convenient to him.
- the time-table database could also be downloaded via the base station again at a time convenient to the user. It will be noted that after being loaded, the time-table database can generally be left for long periods before it is necessary to reload an entire updated time-table.
- the request to the update server sent by the mobile device could include an identifier indicating the version of the timetable database or entries on it, so that the user can be alerted to the need to reload the time-table database.
- the mobile device could for example be a mobile phone, a personal digital assistant or a laptop computer having a wireless internet access. It will also be seen that other time-table information could be related to other forms of transport, such as journeys by aeroplane, coach, tram etc.
