Abstract

A method of labelling a microorganism comprises introducing a label into a first microorganism, wherein the phenotype of the labelled first microorganism is the same as that of a second microorganism is of the same strain as the first but is not labelled and, separately, mutating the first microorganism. In one method, the label is introduced into a phage integration site in the genome of the microorganism. In another the label is in an IStron. Gene identification and assays for gene function are carried out using microorganisms labelled in this way, and the invention also provides vectors for carrying out the labelling.
