Abstract
L'invention appartient au domaine de l'industrie nucléoélectrique dans lequel on utilise le thorium comme combustible nucléaire. Elle permet de piloter plus efficacement un réacteur nucléaire par la modification (le décalage) du spectre énergétique des neutrons dans la zone active du réacteur ainsi que de porter la durée de vie d'un réacteur nucléaire à 30 - 50 ans après un seul chargement en combustible, de faire cesser presque complètement la production de plutonium et d'autres éléments transuraniens dans un réacteur nucléaire, d'éliminer la transformation radiochimique subséquente du combustible nucléaire usé et, partant, d'éviter tout transport du combustible nucléaire usé à l'extérieur et, enfin, d'augmenter la sécurité écologique de l'industrie nucléoélectrique. On pilote le réacteur à thorium en modifiant la gamme énergétique des neutrons dans la zone active du réacteur grâce à l'injection dans les éléments combustibles de ralentisseurs de neutrons sous forme gazeuse, à une pression régulée comprise entre la pression normale et une pression de plusieurs milliers d'atmosphères et plus. L'ensemble de cartouches pour réacteurs nucléaires à thorium comprend des éléments combustibles et est muni d'un collecteur central de distribution et/ou de collecteurs périphériques d'injection de ralentisseurs de neutrons gazeux.
