Abstract

An inspection system (10) is provided for inspecting a carriageway (11), such as a runway for aircraft (12), or other types of carriageway or surface, such as a motor racing circuit or any surface used by vehicles (34). The inspection system (10) comprises a series of transmitter/sensor receiving devices (13/14), in this case in a common housing or separate housings (13, 14). Each transmitter device (13) transmits a laser or other type of scanning signal (15) to scan an area (16) of the carriageway (11) and be received by a respective sensor (14). The sensor (14) sends an output signal (19) to an indicator device (20, 23) whose display indicates when the scanning signal (15) impinges on an object (17) on the carriageway (11). This can trigger an alarm (32) and/or alert a controller to take appropriate action. The system (10) includes cameras (24) that are provided to allow close visual inspection of the detected object (17).
