Abstract

The invention relates to a method for controlling a laser-based 3R regenerator according to which a non-linear multi-section laser that is operated with a high photon density is used as a discriminator element in order to improve the switching speed of the laser. Pulse trains of the data signal and clock signal are adjusted in the discriminator element whereby one pulse at a time of the data signal, which is delayed over an optical delay line by approximately a half bit, is placed in the temporal gap between each two pulses of the clock signal. In order to prevent interferences, the pulses of the data signal and clock signal, and the emitted laser radiation have a different wavelength or polarization or beam direction. The powers of the data signal and clock signal are adjusted so that the action upon the non-linear multi-section laser is approximately equal, and the laser is switched in the proximity of the lasing threshold. In addition, approximately the same number of charge carriers for amplifying the signals in the laser are used as during the laser operation without beamed-in signals.
