Abstract

A lever type electrical connector assembly includes a first connector having a pivotally mounted actuating lever. A cam groove is formed in a portion of the first connector, and a plurality of terminals are mountable at defined positions. A terminal retainer is positionable on the first connector in a preload position and is movable to a retaining position only when the terminals are in their defined positions. A second connector has a cam follower projection to be engaged in the cam groove of the first connector, whereby the connectors are mated and unmated in response to rotation of the actuating lever. The second connector is blocked from mating with the first connector when the terminal retainer is in its preload position.

AMENDED CLAIMS[received by the International Bureau on 23 January 2003 (23.01.03); original claims 1-14 amended (4 pages)]
1. A lever type electrical connector assembly ( 10)., comprising: a first connector (12) including a connector body (16); a cover (18) slidably movably mounted on the connector body (16) and including a cam groove (22) formed therein; an actuating lever (20a) pivotally movably mounted on the cover (18) and engageable with the connector body ( 16) whereby pivotal movement of the actuating lever relative to said cover effects sliding movement of the cover relative to said connector body, a teπninal module (21) positionable in said connector body and mounting a plurality of terminals (40) at defined positions in the terminal module, and, a second connector (14) having a cam follower projection (30) to be engaged in the cam groove (22) of said cover ( 18) whereby the connectors are mated and unmated in response to rotation of the actuating lever (20a) and resulting translation of said cover (18), characterized in that: a terminal retainer (44) is positionable on said terminal module (21) in a preload position and movable to a retaining position only when said terminals (40) are in their defined positions, the teiminal retainer blocking the second connector ( 14) from mating with said first connector (12) when the terminal retainer (44) on said terminal module (21) is in its preload position.

The lever type electrical connector assembly of claim 1 , including complementary interengaging lock shoulders (44a,50) disposed between said terminal retainer (44) and the terminals (40) to lock said terminals in their defined positions when said teπninal retainer (44) is in its retaining position.
3. The lever type electrical connector assembly of claim I , wherein said cam groove (22) and said cam follower projection (30) are located in the connector assembly such that said cam follower projection (30) cannot enter said cam groove with said terminal retainer (44) in its preload position.

The lever type electrical connector assembly of claim 1 , wherein said first connector (12) has a mating groove (S) between said connector body (16) and said terminal module (21) for receiving a mating portion (14b) of said second connector (14), said terminal retainer (44) projecting into said mating groove (S) blocking insertion of the mating portion (46) of said second connector (14) into said mating groove (S) when said terminal retainer is in its preload position,
5. The lever type electrical connector assembly of claim 1 , wherein said actuating lever comprises one actuating arm (20a) of a generally U-shaped lever structure (20) having a pair of actuating arms (20a) pivotally mounted on opposite sides of said cover (18).
6. The lever type electrical connector assembly of claim 1 , wherein said cover (18) includes a pair of said cam grooves (22) spaced laterally of a mating direction (B) of the connectors and engageable by a pair of said cam follower projections (30) on said second connector (14).
7. The lever type electrical connector assembly of claim 1 , wherein said cover ( 18) is positionable over the connector body (16) and said cam groove (22) is located inside a side wall of said cover (18).

The lever type electrical connector assembly of claim 7, wherein said second connector (14) is mateable inside said first connector (12) and said cam follower projection (30) extends from the second connector (14) through said connector body (16) of said first connector (12) and into the cam groove (22) inside said cover (18).
9. The lever type electrical connector assembly of claim 1 , including complementary interengaging guide rail means (16d,16c>32,34,36) between said cover (18) and the connector body and extending transversely of a mating direction of said first and second connectors (12, 14).
10. The lever type electrical connector assembly of claim 1 , wherein said second connector
14 (14) is mateable inside said first connector (12) and said cam follower projection (30) extends from said second connector (14) through the connector body (16) of said first connector (12).
11. A lever type electrical connector assembly (10), comprising: a first connector ( 12) including a pivotally mounted actuating lever (20a), a cam groove (22) formed in a portion (18) of the first connector, a plurality of terminals (40) mountable at defined positions, and a second connector (14) having a cam follower projection (30) to be engaged in the cam groove (22) of the first connector (12) whereby the connectors (12,
14) are mated and unmated in response to rotation of the actuating lever (20a), characterized in that: a terminal retainer (44) is positionable on the first connector (12) in a preload position and movable to a retaining position only when the terminals (40) are in their defined positions, the terminal retainer blocking the second connector (14) from mating with the first connector (12) when the terminal retainer (44) is in its preload position.
12. The lever type electrical connector assembly of claim 11 , including complementary interengaging lock shoulders (44a,50) between said terminal retainer (44) and the terminals (40) to lock the terminals in their defined positions when said terminal retainer (44) is in its retaining position.
13. The lever type electrical connector assembly of claim 11 , wherein said cam groove (22) and said cam follower projection (30) are located in the assembly such that said cam follower projection (30) cannot enter said cam groove (22) with said terminal retainer (44) in its preload position.
14. The lever type electrical connector assembly of claim 11 , wherein said first connector (12) has a mating groove (S) for receiving a mating portion (14b) of said second connector (14), said terminal retainer (44) projecting into the mating groove (S) blocking insertion of the mating portion of the second connector (1 ) into said mating groove (S)
