Description

ADVERTISING METHOD USING WEB BROWSER HAVING ADVERTISING FUNCTION
Technical Field
The present invention relates generally to an advertising method using a Web browser having an advertising function, and more particularly to an advertising method, in which an Internet service provider provides a Web browser having an advertising function to users, and distributes advertising profits among the users.
Background Art
An "Internet service provider" is a company which provides Internet access services, Web site construction services, Web hosting services, etc. to personal users and companies. For these services, Internet service providers prepare equipments and communication lines required for Internet access. Large-scale Internet service providers prepare their own high-speed leased lines in some cases so as to provide improved services to their users with dependence on telephone network service providers being reduced.
In the United States, there are AT&T WorldNet, IBM Global Network, MCI, Netcom, UUnet, PSINet, etc., as large-scale Internet service providers for covering the whole country or local areas. In Korea, there are Inet, Channeli, Netsgo, Netian, etc., as large-scale Internet service providers. Moreover, users frequently access the Internet through on-line service providers. In the United States, there are America Online, CompuServe, etc., as representative on-line service providers. In Korea, there are Chollian, Unitel, Hitel, etc., as on-line service providers.
At the present time when the Internet is activated, personal users or companies must subscribe to the Internet service providers as described above so as to access the Internet and carry out Internet surfing. However, the conventional Internet service providers are problematic in that the personal users or companies must pay for Internet services when they subscribe to the Internet service providers. Especially, if the users subscribe to Internet service providers equipped with high-speed leased lines, the cost is high.
Further, the Internet service providers as described above provide exclusive Web browsers to subscribers in some cases, besides a Web browser such as Internet Explorer of Microsoft Corporation, as tools for Internet surfing. However, the Internet service providers which provide exclusive Web browsers are problematic in that they cannot utilize the exclusive Web browsers as advertising means.
Disclosure of the Invention
Accordingly, the present invention has been made keeping in mind the above problems occurring in the prior art, and an object of the present invention is to provide an advertising method, which enables personal users or companies to save the costs required to subscribe to Internet service providers, and allows the Internet service providers to recover the reduced subscriber fees as advertising profits and to distribute a part of the advertising profits among subscribing users.
In order to accomplish the above object, the present invention provides an advertising method using a Web browser having an advertising function, comprising the steps of providing by an Internet service provider a Web browser having an advertising function to a subscribing user; and providing an advertisement to the user according to the advertising function stored in the Web browser when the user performs Internet surfing.
In the advertising method of the present invention, the Web browser providing step is performed such that while accessing a Web server of the Internet service provider, the user downloads the Web browser and installs the Web browser in a user computer.

Best Mode for Carrying Out the Invention
Hereinafter, a preferred embodiment of a system for performing the present invention is described in detail.
Fig. 1 is a block diagram of a system according to a preferred embodiment of the present invention. Referring to Fig. 1, a Web site 20 of an
Internet service provider comprising a Web server 21, a database 22 for storing a Web browser having an advertising function and a member managing database 23 is connected to user computers 10, 11 and 12 through the Internet. For convenience, only three user computers are depicted in Fig. 1, however there are actually a large number of user computers in the system.
The Web server 21 is a typical Web server of a typical client/server system. The Web server 21 performs a function of enabling the Web browser having an advertising function, advertising information, etc. to be downloaded to the user computers 10, 11 and 12 according to the advertising method of the present invention, if a user accesses the Internet service provider Web site 20 and subscribes to the service. For this function, those skilled in the art can construct the connection of the Web server 21 with the databases 22 and 23 using CGI, ASP, etc. without specific limitations.
The Web browser storing database 22 is a database for storing a Web browser having an advertising function according to the present invention. The Web browser includes a function of performing an advertisement of the present invention, as well as basic functions for Web browsing, and advertising information provided according to the present invention. Further, the Web browser includes functions of selecting and displaying an advertisement according to personal information of a subscribing user, which is stored in the member managing database 23 as described later.
The member managing database 23 is a database for storing a time used for Internet surfing by the user, the number of accesses of the user to a sponsor Web site provided by the Web browser, etc., according to subscribing users, as well as personal information of the user who subscribes to the Internet service provider. In this case, the Internet surfing time and the number of accesses can be base data when the advertising profits of the Internet service provider are distributed according to the advertising method of this invention.
Hereinafter, preferred embodiments of an advertising method of the present invention are described in detail using the above system, with reference to Figs. 2 to 6.
Fig. 2 is a flowchart showing a process of providing a Web browser having an advertising function to a user according to a preferred embodiment of the present invention. A current user subscribes to an Internet service provider which does not provide an advertising service of the present invention, and the user computers 10, 11 and 12 store Web browsers not having an advertising function, such as Internet Explorer. When the user accesses the Internet service provider Web site 20 which provides an advertising function of the present invention using the user computer 10, 11 or 12 at step S210, the Web server 21 of the Web site 20 transmits a Web page to the user computer 10, 11 or 12 for requesting the user to log in or subscribe as a member. If the user receiving the Web page logs into the Web site, or subscribes to the Web site through the user computer at step S220, personal information of the user is stored in the member managing database 23. Further, the Web server 21 enables the user to download a Web browser having an advertising function, which is stored in the Web browser storing database 22, to the user computer 10, 11 or 12 at step S230.
Through the above method, the Web browser having an advertising function of the present invention and advertising information performed through the Web browser are stored in the user computer 10, 11 or 12. In accordance with the above method, the user accesses the Web site for providing an advertising service of the present invention, so the Web browser having an advertising function is provided to the user through a downloading operation. However, the present invention is not limited to the above operations. For example, the Web browser having an advertising function can be provided to the user through a recording medium readable by a computer, such as a compact disc-read only memory (CD-ROM) or a floppy disc in which the Web browser having an advertising function and advertising information are stored.
Further, if a new advertising function is added to the Web browser, or advertising information of the Web browser is updated, it is preferable to inform the user of the addition of the new function or the updating of advertising information, and allow the user to access the Internet service provider Web site and download the changed Web browser. Even in this case, the Web browser having a new advertising function and updated advertising information can be provided to the user through a recording medium readable by a computer.
Hereinafter, preferred embodiments of the method of performing an advertisement through a Web browser according to the present invention are described in detail with reference to Figs. 3 to 6.
First, an advertising method performed according to the present invention is described with reference to Fig. 3.
An advertising method of Fig. 3 is characterized in that when the Web browser is run and displayed, the movement of a cursor is detected, and if it is detected that the cursor is not located on an instruction input window, such as a menu bar, a tool bar, and a location bar, an advertisement is provided to the instruction input window.
When the user runs the Web browser having an advertising function of the present invention, which is stored in the user computer 10, 11 or 12, so as to perform Internet surfing at step S310, the Web browser determines whether a cursor is located on a menu bar, a tool bar or a location bar by detecting the position of the cursor because the Web browser has an additional program for detecting the current position of the cursor at step S320. If the cursor is located on a menu bar, a tool bar, or a location bar according to the determined result, the Web browser outputs the menu bar, the tool bar, or the location bar at step S330, and executes an instruction entered by the user at step S350. However, if the cursor is not located on the menu bar, the tool bar, or the location bar according to the determined result, the Web browser outputs an advertising screen in place of the menu bar, the tool bar or the location bar, at the position where the menu bar, the tool bar or the location bar is outputted at step S340. The advertising screen is advertising information stored in the Web browser and can be, for example, a logo, a brand name, a banner advertisement of a specific company, etc.
By using the above advertising method, an advertising effect can be improved by utilizing a menu bar, a tool bar, or a location bar, which is not used by the user on the screen of the Web browser, as an advertisement.
Second, an advertising method performed according to the present invention is described with reference to Fig. 4.
An advertising method shown in Fig. 4 is characterized in that the Web browser detects whether a Web page which the user computer is downloading contains a banner advertisement or a logo, and if a banner advertisement or a logo is contained in the Web page, the Web browser stops the banner advertisement or the logo from being outputted on the Web browser screen, stores the size and position of the banner advertisement or logo, selects a banner advertisement or logo suitable for the size of the banner advertisement or the logo of the output-stopped Web page among banner advertisements or logos prestored in the Web browser, and inserts the selected banner advertisement or logo into the position of the banner advertisement or the logo of the Web page which is currently outputted on the screen, thus performing an advertisement.
The user runs the Web browser of the present invention stored in the user computer 10, 11 or 12 at step S410. Then, if the user accesses a Web server by entering a domain name of a desired Web site at step S420, the Web server transmits a Web page to the user computer 10, 11, or 12. In this case, the Web browser of the present invention determines whether a banner advertisement or a logo is contained in the transmitted Web page at step S430. If a banner advertisement or a logo is contained in the transmitted Web page according to the determined result, the Web browser of the present invention stops the banner advertisement or the logo from being loaded at step S440.
As described above, a technology for deleting a banner advertisement or a logo from a Web page is not particularly limited. However, the technology can be achieved using a method of storing an "ad-off program" well known in the technical field of the Web browser of the present invention. Then, the Web browser of this invention ascertains the size and position information of the deleted banner advertisement or logo at step S450, and selects a banner advertisement or a logo having a size similar to the deleted banner advertisement or logo from the Web browser having an advertising function at step S460. The banner advertisement or the logo selected in this way is inserted into the position where the original banner advertisement or logo is deleted at step S430 at step S470, and outputted to the user computer at step S480.
Further, if it is determined that a banner advertisement or a logo is not contained in the transmitted Web page at step S430, the Web page is outputted to the user computer as it is.
By using the above advertising method, the user does not need to receive an entire large-capacity file from the server accessed by the user, so a file downloading time can be shortened. Further, sponsors can reliably entrust advertisements to Internet service providers without fear that the users do not view advertisements using a program such as the "ad-off.
Third, an advertising method performed according to the present invention is described with reference to Fig. 5. An advertising method shown in Fig. 5 is characterized in that if data are downloaded through the Web browser, an advertisement is outputted on the screen of the Web browser during the downloading of the data, thus performing an advertisement. While the user runs the Web browser of this invention to perform
Internet surfing at step S510, it is determined whether the user accesses a Web site providing a program the user desires to download, for example, shareware and inputs a file download instruction at step S520. If the file download instruction has been inputted from the user, the Web browser of this invention displays an advertisement on a part of the screen of the Web browser together with a display window for displaying a downloading state, thus performing the advertisement at step S530. Further, the Web browser determines whether the downloading has been completed at step S540. If the downloading has been completed, the Web browser of this invention automatically stops the presentation of the advertisement, and outputs a previous screen at step S550, while if the downloading has not been completed, the Web browser continuously presents the advertisement.
According to the above advertising method, an advertisement is presented on the screen together with a window for displaying a downloading state without special screen conversion during the downloading of files, thus enabling the user to clearly recognize the advertisement.
Fourth, an advertising method performed according to the present invention is described with reference to Fig. 6.
An advertising method of Fig. 6 is characterized in that an advertising function stored in the Web browser presents an advertisement by outputting an advertisement on the screen of the web browser until a new Web page is completely outputted if a screen conversion instruction is inputted so as to convert a current Web browser screen to another Internet site, or a page linked to the current page.
When the user runs the Web browser of this invention at step S610, the Web browser outputs a Web page set as a home page by the user. Then, the Web browser determines whether a screen conversion instruction has been inputted so as to convert the homepage to another Internet site, or another page linked to the homepage outputted currently at step S620. If the screen conversion instruction has been inputted, the Web browser of this invention outputs an advertisement stored in the Web browser, simultaneously with the input of the screen conversion instruction, until the screen conversion has finished at step S630. Further, the Web browser determines whether the screen conversion has finished at step S640. If the screen conversion has finished, the Web browser of this invention outputs a screen requested by the user and stops the output of the advertisement at step S650, thus performing an advertisement. The screen conversion instruction is an instruction generated when the user enters a domain name of a site the user desires to access in an input window of the Web browser and clicks an enter key, or when the user clicks a window for outputting a Web page linked to a current Web page using a mouse, or in other cases. According to the advertising method as described above, the advertising method is advantageous in that it attracts a user's attention, so an advertising effect can be improved because advertisements are presented while the screen is converted, that is, while the user is forced to wait.
It is clear that the advertising method using a Web browser having an advertising function according to the present invention is not limited to the above embodiments. For example, in a conventional Web browser, there is used a manner in which a logo operates to indicate a standby time during a time for transmitting/receiving data so as to convert a current screen to another screen or another site when a user accesses the Internet. For example, the Web browser of Microsoft Corporation employs a manner for executing a logo in which the globe of the Earth rotates. In the present invention, the advertisement may be presented by replacing the logo of the globe of the Earth with a logo of a specific company. The advertising methods using a Web browser having an advertising function of the present invention, described with reference to Figs. 3 to 6, can be individually realized. However, it is more preferable to advertise by combining two or more methods, that is, storing combined advertising functions in the Web browser.
Preferably, the advertising method of the present invention further comprises the steps of measuring the amount of time used by the user in surfing the Internet through the Web browser, or the number of accesses of the user to a home page of a sponsor provided by the present invention, storing the measured results in the member managing database 23, and distributing a part of advertising profits to the user according to the stored results, thus enabling the user to obtain a reasonable gain.
The present invention as described above is advantageous in that an Internet service provider distributes Web browsers having an advertising function with excellent advertising efficiency among subscribing users, and presents advertisements, thereby enabling the Internet service provider to obtain an advertising profit, provide Internet services to the subscribing users without cost on the basis of the advertising profit, and further return a part of the advertising profits to the subscribing users. Further, various current techniques, such as application of moving pictures, flash techniques, voices, etc., are gradually utilized so as to improve an advertising effect. However, the technologies are problematic in that a file size is large, so a transmission speed is delayed, and if the user does not have software for viewing a corresponding program, rather the advertising effect may be reduced. However, the advertising method of the present invention is advantageous in that a user computer previously stores advertisements, thus preventing Internet surfing speed from decreasing due to the transmission of advertisements. Further, various software already utilized in advertising techniques are stored in the user computer, thus increasing advertising efficiency.
Moreover, the present invention is advantageous in that the user can view only advertisements of a company to which the user subscribes, even though the user visits any Web sites, thereby realizing an exclusive advertisement system and giving absolute satisfaction to a sponsor, so the merger and expansion of Internet businesses can be achieved.
Although the preferred embodiments of the present invention have been disclosed for illustrative purposes, those skilled in the art will appreciate that various modifications, additions and substitutions are possible, without departing from the scope and spirit of the invention as disclosed in the accompanying claims.
