Definitions
- the invention provides a first-aid kit system having an exterior physical form of sports equipment.
- the physical form of the first-aid kit promotes carrying the system with similarly shaped sports equipment or other sports equipment thereby promoting carrying the kit, as well as, by virtue of its unique shape, making it more visually apparent and, hence, more easily located in the event of the kit being required for its intended use.
- First-aid kits are well known in various physical forms for use in association with different activities and by different people and/or professions.
- first-aid kits With respect to the use of first-aid kits, it is of primary importance that first-aid kits be readily-accessible in order that the contents can be used for treatment as quickly as possible.
- first-aid kits By virtue of the different people using first-aid kits (non-medically trained and trained medical personnel), the number of different activities carried on by different people, there is a need for first-aid kits to be developed in many different forms specific to the anticipated user of the kit and the activity that the kit might be associated with. Accordingly, variations in design accommodate differences in the desired contents and the mode of use of the kit.
- first-aid kits may be specific to automobile use, home use, professional use, to specific facilities, etc., with the use determining both the physical shape or volume of the kit as well as the contents.
- First-aid kits are best known in the form of a white box with a red cross marking.
- the white box in combination with the red cross assists in the identification of the box as a first- aid kit with the white colour generally providing ready identification of the box and the red cross providing a recognized symbol that describes the contents of the kit.
- kits which may or may not include the red-cross marking.
- Such designs may include soft- shelled kits which are designed primarily for use where it is important that the physical volume of the kit is minimized such as for travel or backpacking/camping use or kits having various functionalities with respect to the interior or exterior of the kit.
- Such functionality may include how the contents are organized as disclosed in US patent 5,931,304 and/or carried as in US Patent 4,513,866 and US Patent 3,227,867.
- Such carrying systems include various containers in the form of sports equipment including a football tote bag, as disclosed in US Design Patent 335,956 and US Design Patent 394,348, a football helmet, as in US Design Patent 406,461 , a baseball tote bag as in US Design Patent
- a team's equipment include a first-aid kit. Furthermore, it is desirable that the first-aid kit can be conveniently transported with the team equipment in order to assist with the primary objective of having first-aid equipment readily accessible in the event that it is required.
- a first-aid kit is readily recognized as a first- aid kit in order that individuals who may not be the owners of the kit, but who may be users of the kit, will understand that the container is a first-aid kit.
- a sports team's equipment will include numerous balls or bats, such as soccer balls, footballs or baseball bats which are usually or often carried in a large netted or reinforced cloth bag to the field of play.
- This equipment bag is usually left at the side of the field in order that the players and coaches can readily access its contents for playing, training or warm-up purposes.
- First-aid kits in the form of the standard white box may be included in the sports bag for ease of transport or accessibility.
- the white box being of a different physical form to the balls or bats normally carried within the bag and that it may interfere with the use of the equipment, the first-aid kit is often separated from the bag by players or coaches.
- standard first-aid kits may become lost or misplaced and, thereby, not available when needed.
- a first-aid system comprising a container and lid system having the general physical form of a piece of sports equipment, the container having an interior for containing and storing first-aid equipment, the lid system for operative engagement with the container and for accessing the interior, the container and lid system also having an exterior surface with at least one marking identifying the first-aid system as a first-aid system.
- the physical form is selected from any one of a soccer ball, a football, a baseball bat, cricket bat, a tennis racket, a basketball, a lacrosse stick, a badminton racket, a squash racket, a volleyball, skis, or golf clubs.
- the marking is selected from any one of or a combination of a graphical symbol or text.
- the interior includes elastic straps for securing first-aid equipment and/or the lid system and container includes a dust or moisture gasket.
- the physical form is a soccer ball and the container and lid system are half spheres hingedly connected to one another, the half spheres including a locking system for securing the half spheres in a closed configuration.
- the physical form is a baseball bat having a handle portion and a bat portion wherein the container and lid system are bat portion halves hingedly connected to one another, the bat portion halves including a locking system for securing the bat portion halves in a closed configuration.
- Figure 1 is an exterior side view of a first-aid system in a closed configuration in accordance with a soccer ball embodiment of the invention
- Figure 2 is a plan view of a first-aid system in an open configuration in accordance with a soccer ball embodiment of the invention
- Figure 3 is a cross-sectional view of a first-aid system in a closed configuration in accordance with a soccer ball embodiment of the invention
- Figure 4 is a side view of a first-aid system in a closed configuration in accordance with a baseball bat embodiment of the invention.
- Figure 5 is a side view of a first-aid system in an open configuration in accordance with a baseball bat embodiment of the invention.
- the first-aid system 10 includes a container 12 and lid system 14 having the general physical form ofapiece of sports equipment.
- the first- aid system has the general physical form of a soccer ball whereas in Figures 4 and 5, the first- aid system has the general physical form of a baseball bat.
- the system provides a convenient system for the storage of first-aid supplies within the interior of the system. Access to the interior is through lid 14 which may be attached to the container by a hinge system 16. A clasp and/or lock 18 may be provided for securing the lid against the container. In a preferred form, both the hinge and clasp/lock are recessed within the exterior surface of the container.
- the first-aid supplies 15 such as bandages, ointments, rubber gloves, surgical tape, etc. are stored in appropriate sections of the container. Due to the "irregular" shape of the container 12, it is preferred that a retaining system 20 is employed to prevent the supplies from spilling from the container each time the system is opened.
- the retaining system may include separate sealable compartments with individual lids, elastic retaining straps 20 as shown in Figures 2, 3 and 5 or re-sealable bags secured to the container by an attachment system such as a hook and clasp system (including velcroTM ) or glue.
- the interior may be lined with a hook or clasp fabric with multiple straps of the corresponding hook or clasp fabric provided to enable a user to selectively fasten first-aid supplies to the interior as required for the specific supplies being contained.
- the system On the exterior of the container, the system is provided with at least one marking 25 which clearly identifies the first-aid system as a container of first-aid supplies.
- the marking may be a graphical symbol such as a cross on a clear background or clearly marked wording identifying the system. Suitable wording may be "First- Aid” or “First- Aid Kit” alone or in combination with an associated tradename.
- an embodiment of the invention is shown in the form of a soccer ball.
- the ball has two halves 12, 14 (a container and lid) which are hinged together and which may be locked together via a clasp or other suitable locking device such as a zipper.
- the container and lid have elastic straps to retain first-aid supplies.
- a gasket 30 is provided between the two halves.
- an embodiment is shown in the form of a baseball bat.
- the bat has a lid system on the "ball contacting" area of the bat which is hinged to allow access to the interior.
- the system includes a clasp (or zipper) and a gasket.
- the physical form of the system may be selected from a number of different types of sports equipment including soccer balls, footballs, baseball bats, cricket bats, tennis rackets, basketballs, lacrosse sticks, badminton rackets, squash rackets, volleyballs, or other pieces of sports equipment generally having an internal volume generally adaptable to contain a reasonable amount of first-aid equipment without grossly changing the exterior dimensions of the equipment.
- the physical form of the system may also correspond to sports equipment such as skis or golf clubs through modification of the exterior dimensions of the general form of the equipment.
- the first-aid system is designed to be carried in association with similarly shaped sports equipment thereby promoting carrying the system as well as, by virtue of its unique shape, making it more visually apparent and, hence, more easily located in the event of the kit being required for its intended use.
