Description

PAPER QUILT AND METHOD FOR MANUFACTURING THE SAME
Technical Field
The present invention relates to a paper quilt that contributes to preventing
environmental pollution due to its unique properties and a method for manufacturing the
same, more particularly a paper quilt having the properties of being exceedingly light¬
weight, very compact, and available in various colors and designs, and a method for
manufacturing the paper quilt.
Background Art
In general, a quilt or a bedcover is used for providing a user with a cozy sleeping
atmosphere and different quilts or bedcovers are utilized in accordance with the change of
the seasons. Such quilts are generally made of fabrics in between which cotton or a similar
insulator is interposed. Though conventional quilts given various colors by means of the
dyeing process, the manufacturing process of conventional quilts causes environmental
pollution during the dyeing process. Also, conventional quilts only provide a cozy sleeping
atmosphere without any additional functions to benefit the health of the user. Thus, a quilt
having additional functions is disclosed at Korean Utility Patent No. 203,170, entitled "A
Multi-purpose Quilt".
Fig. 1 is a perspective view showing the multi-purpose quilt, and Fig. 2 is s cross- sectional view further illustrating the quilt in Fig. 1.
Referring to Figs. 1 and 2, the quilt 10 has covers 15, an ion fiber layer 20 attached
to one face of the covers 15, and a mixture 30 disposed between the ion fiber layer 20 and
the covers 15. The mixture 30 is composed of cotton mixed with a mineral powder,
wormwood or charcoal.
The covers 15 are made of fabric for the quilt, and the ion fiber 20 is attached to a
front face or rear face of the covers 15 by means of stitching or adhesive. Also, the ion
fiber layer 20 is attached to both faces of the covers 15. The mixture 30 is inserted between
the ion fiber layer 20 or covers 15 depending on the health specification of a user. The
mixture 30 includes cotton mixed with jade, germanium, wormwood or charcoal.
However, when the conventional quilt and the multi-purpose quilt are
manufactured, then used and discarded, the conventional quilt and the multi-purpose quilt
have several problems as follows.
The conventional quilt is designed to have a predetermined color and pattern
created through the dyeing procedure or an embroidery method employed in the
manufacturing process. When the quilt is made using the dyeing process, serious
environmental pollution may be caused by the dyes. Alternatively, manufacturing costs and
time may be greatly increased when the quilt is manufactured using the embroidery
method.
Also, because the conventional quilt is relatively heavy and has a large volume, the quilt is bulky, requires much wide space for storage and necessitates the use of special
machines or dry-cleaning services to launder property.
Furthermore, when conventional quilt are disclosed at the end of their life of
usefulness, valuable reclaimed ground is occupied to provide landfill space for their
disposal, and in addition, environmental pollution may be caused when the discarded quilt
is reduced to ashes. In particular, such environment pollution may be greatly increased in
the case of those quilts are made of synthetic textiles.

direction.
A sheet for absorbing moisture and emitting perfume can be interposed between
the first sheet and the second sheet. The sheet for absorbing moisture and emitting perfume
includes a cover that is capable of being permeated by a liquid, at least one non-woven
fabric layer and a baffle for ventilation.
A closing member can be formed for enclosing peripheral portions of the first and
the second sheets, and a hanging member can be attached to end portions of the first and
the second sheets or to an end portion of the closing member. In this case, the closing
member is formed by means of attaching or backstitching cloth, paper or a non-woven
fabric to the peripheral portions of the first and the second sheets.
An elastic sheet can be disposed on the first sheet, between the first sheet and the
second sheet or beneath the second sheet. The elastic sheet is composed of cotton,
synthetic resin, rubber or sponge.
Preferably, the first and the second sheets are composed respectively of Korean
paper made from mulberry trees or recycled paper made from waste paper from the
newsprint industry, printing paper or tissue paper. A plurality of spaces can be created between the first sheet and the second sheet
along the first and the second directional axis. The spaces are filled with at least one
selected from the group consisting of loess, jade, mica, phophyry, zeolite, wormwood and
charcoal.
The binding member is composed of a plurality of threads used to quilt the first
and the second sheets along the first and the second directions. Also, the binding member
may be composed of adhesives or double-faced tapes placed beneath the first sheet or onto
the second sheet along the first and the second directions.
Also, to achieve the above objects of the present invention, there is provided a
method for manufacturing a paper quilt comprising the steps of forming a first sheet
composed of at least one layer selected from the group consisting of paper, non-woven
fabric and pulp, forming a second sheet corresponding to the first sheet wherein the second
sheet is composed of at least one layer identical to that of the first sheet, and binding the
first and the second sheets using a binding member composed of a plurality of threads
quilting the first and the second sheets along a first and a second directions.
Furthermore, to achieve the above objects of the present invention, there is
provided a method for manufacturing a paper quilt comprising the steps of forming a first
sheet composed of at least one layer selected from the group consisting of paper, non-
woven fabric and pulp, forming a second sheet corresponding to the first sheet wherein the
second sheet is composed of at least one layer identical to that of the first sheet, the step of forming a binding member composed of adhesives or double-faced tapes placed beneath
the first sheet or onto the second sheet along a first direction and a second direction, and
binding the first and the second sheets using the binding member.
According to the present invention, the paper quilt having exceedingly light weight
and small volumes can be manufactured to have various colors and designs using recycled
paper, Korean paper, non-woven fabrics or pulps. Therefore, the paper quilt of the present
invention provides wide utilization of scrap paper, and reduces environmental pollution
caused by excess scrap paper. Also, the paper quilt can be simply manufactured using
Korean paper has many advantages such as moderately high strength, and the various
colors and designs provide an excellent selection to choose from when planning elegant
interior schemes in accordance with the tastes of users. Furthermore, the paper quilt of the
present invention can be easily carried and conveniently stored because of its very light

Best Modes for Carrying out the Invention
Hereinafter, the preferred embodiments of the present invention will be explained
in more detail with reference to the accompanying drawings.
Embodiment 1
Fig. 3 is a perspective view showing a paper quilt using recycled waste paper or
non-woven fabric according to a first embodiment of the present invention, and Fig. 4 is a
partially enlarged perspective view illustrating the paper quilt in Fig. 3.
Referring to Figs. 3 and 4, a paper quilt 100 of the present embodiment has a first sheet 110, a second sheet 120 disposed under the first sheet 110, a moisture absorbing and
perfume emitting sheet 160 disposed between the first and the second sheets 110 and 120,
a closing member 130 formed at peripheral portions of the first and the second sheets 110
and 120, and a binding member 140 disposed along a first and a second directions for
attaching the first sheet 110 to the second sheet 120.
The first and the second sheets 110 and 120 respectively include at least one paper
layer, and the paper layer is composed of the recycled paper made from waste paper from
the newsprint industry, printing paper or tissue paper. The first and the second sheets 110
and 120 also include at least one non-woven fabric layer or pulp layer. Preferably, the first
and the second sheets 110 and 120 include six paper layers, six non-woven fabric layers, or
six pulp layers, respectively.
Table 2 shows various recycled paper having different characteristics and
compositions included in manufacture of the paper quilt according to the present
embodiment.
Table 2: characteristics and compositions of recycled paper
Figure imgf000011_0001
Figure imgf000012_0001
As shown in table 2, the first and the second sheets 110 and 120 of the present
embodiment are manufactured using at least one recycled paper layer after the various
recycled papers are cut to the shape of a sheet of a predetermined size. In this case, the
recycled paper layers are made of scrap newsprint paper, printing paper or tissue paper.
Though the first and the second sheets 110 and 120 include one recycled paper layer, the
first and the second sheets 110 and 120 are preferably composed of several recycled paper
layers so that the paper quilt 100 has a predetermined strength and insulating quotient for
warmth. According to the present embodiment, the first and the second sheets 110 and 120
have various colors and shapes because the paper quilt 100 is formed using several paper
layers. That is, various patterns, pictures, diagrams or animal shapes are printed onto
surfaces of the first and the second sheets 110 and 120 at a lower cost that the dying or
embroidery procedures used in the production of conventional quilts. In addition, the paper
quilt 100 of the present invention has another advantage over the conventional quilt that
the price is lower and the design possibilities are limitless since arbitrary logotypes or
letters requested by a user can be easily printed on the first sheet 110 or the second sheet
120.
The moisture absorbing and perfume emitting sheet 160 is attached beneath the
first sheet 110. The moisture absorbing and emitting perfume sheet 160 prevents the paper
quilt 100 from tearing or being damaged due to penetration of moisture from the air. Also,
the moisture absorbing and perfume emitting sheet 160 emits various predetermined
aromas selected in accordance with tastes of users. The moisture absorbing and perfume
emitting sheet 160 includes a cover through which liquid can pass, at least one non- woven
fabric layer and a baffle for ventilation. The liquid permeable cover, the non-woven fabric
layer and the baffle for ventilation are successively layered. At that time, several aromas
can be sprayed onto the non-woven fabric layer so that various aromas are then
continuously emitted from the paper quilt 100 during use.
The first and the second sheets 110 and 120 are combined with each other using the binding member 140 disposed along the first and second directions. The binding
member 140 is composed of a plurality of threads. That is, the second sheet 120 is aligned
to correspond to the first sheet 110, and then the first and the second sheets 110 and 120 are
backstitched at predetermined intervals using a thread in a vertical direction (that is, the
first direction). Subsequently, the first and the second sheets 110 and 120 are repeatedly
backstitched at predetermined intervals using anther thread in a horizontal direction (that is,
the second direction). As a result, the first sheet 110 combines with the second sheet 120
by interposing a plurality of spaces between the first and the second sheets 110 and 120 as
shown Figs. 3 and 4. Those spaces are also disposed in vertical and horizontal directions.
In this case, the first and the second sheets 110 and 120 are backstitched with
approximately 12 to 20 stitches per inch in order to maintain a predetermined strength and
retain the necessary insulating quotient for warmth. Though the binding member 140
composed of several threads is disposed along the vertical and horizontal directions in Fig.
3, the binding member 140 can be composed of several threads stitched to have diamond
shapes, rectangular shapes, circular shapes, animal shapes or other various patterns in
accordance with colors of the first and the second sheets 110 and 120.
Because a plurality of spaces 150 are formed between the first and the second
sheets 110 and 120, the paper quilt 100 provides sufficient warmth. Considering the health
of a user, material beneficial to health, for example loess, jade, mica, phophyry or zeolite,
are inserted into the spaces 150. Packages of materials (not shown) that emit far infrared rays can be inserted into the spaces 150. Also, materials beneficial to health such as
wormwood or charcoal can be inserted into those spaces 150 to promote the health of the
user, and various perfume emitting agents can be disposed in the spaces 150 in accordance
with the tastes of the user provide a cozy and refreshing sleeping environment.
The closing member 130 is formed at peripheral portions of the first and the
second sheets 110 and 120, thereby completing the paper quilt 100 of the present
embodiment. The closing member 130 is composed of various fabrics or papers identical to
the first and the second sheets 110 and 120. The closing member 130 is attached to
peripheral portions of the first and the second sheets 110 and 120 by means of
backstitching a plurality of threads or by using adhesives.
The hanging member 180 is connected to end portions of the closing member 130
in order to prevent the paper quilt 100 from sliding off the user during use of the paper
quilt 100. The hanging member 180 having a semi-circular shape or a hook shape is
composed of material identical to that of the closing member 130. In addition, the hanging
member 180 is integrally formed with the closing member 130, and may be attached to the
closing member 130.
Embodiment 2
Fig. 5 is an exploded perspective view illustrating a paper quilt according to a
second embodiment of the present invention. Referring to Fig. 5, a paper quilt 200 of the present invention has a first sheet 210,
a second sheet 220 disposed under the first sheet 210, an elastic sheet 290 interposed
between the first and the second sheets 210 and 220, and a binding member 240 for
combining the first sheet 210 with the second sheet 220.
In the case that the paper quilt 200 is utilized as a mat, the elastic sheet 290 is
formed between the first and the second sheets 210 and 220. The elastic sheet 290 is
composed of material having a predetermined elasticity such as cotton, rubber, sponge or
synthetic resin. The elastic sheet 290 can be formed on the first sheet 210 or beneath the
second sheet 220. Thus, the user can sleep comfortably even when the floor or the ground
is hard or rugged due to the function of the elastic sheet 290.
In the present embodiment, a closing member formed at peripheral portions of the
first and the second sheets 210 and 220 is omitted since the closing member is identical to
that of the first embodiment. However, peripheral portions of the first and the second
sheets 210 and 220 are sewn using threads 260 as shown in Fig. 5, so the closing member
cannot be formed at peripheral portions of the first and the second sheets 210 and 220. In
addition, a hanging member can be attached to end portions of the first and the second
sheets 210 and 220 so as to prevent the paper quilt 200 from sliding off the user during use,
as it is described in the first embodiment.
As shown in Fig. 5, after the first and the second sheets 210 and 220 are
respectively formed by combining several layers composed of paper, non-woven fabric or pulp, the binding member 240 is formed on the second sheet 220 along a first and a second
directions. The binding member 240 is composed of adhesives or double-sided tapes, and
disposed along a vertical direction (the first direction) and a horizontal direction (the
