Definitions
- the present invention relates to a pneumatic brake booster with improved braking law.
- the object of the invention is to prevent behavioral defects of the conductors when these conductors are applying a braking action. More generally, the invention aims to provide more powerful assistance in the event of sudden braking.
- a pneumatic brake booster comprises in principle a front chamber with variable volume separated from a rear chamber also with variable volume by a partition formed by a tight and flexible membrane and by a rigid skirt plate.
- the rigid skirt drives a pneumatic piston bearing, via a push rod, on a primary piston of a master cylinder of a hydraulic braking circuit, typically a tandem master cylinder.
- the front chamber located on the side of the master cylinder, is pneumatically connected to a vacuum source.
- the rear chamber opposite the front chamber and placed on the side of a brake pedal, is pneumatically connected, in a controlled manner by a valve, to a source of propellant, typically air under atmospheric pressure.
- a source of propellant typically air under atmospheric pressure.
- the front and rear chambers are connected together while the rear chamber is isolated from atmospheric pressure.
- the front chamber is first isolated from the rear chamber, then air is admitted into the rear chamber. This air intake has the effect of propelling the partition and implementing the pneumatic braking assistance.
- the emergency braking causes, with the power of the force applied, fatigue of the driver which in turn leads to a relaxation of the pressure on the brake pedal. Then the driver pulls himself together, makes an extra effort and presses again. In the meantime, of course, the vehicle has not been braked. In other situations, emergency braking follows a hesitation of the driver before he is convinced that he really has to brake.
- the principle of the invention consists on the one hand in recognizing which braking operations require this intelligent intervention, and which ones for which the driver's action must be taken into account alone. In the invention, this choice is made on the abrupt nature of the braking.
- this braking is maintained, without necessarily being maintained with as much force as the first depressing of the driver on the pedal causes. In other words, this maintenance of the braking occurs with a subsequent release. This subsequent relaxation is subsequent to the relaxation of the driver's foot. There is therefore a delay in release. As a result, during the second press, the brake is not completely released and the work performed by the driver is then less, and the braking operation is more immediate.
- a simple mechanism is implemented to achieve this result.
- This simple mechanism has the advantage of being able to be used for a long time, for example ten years, and on numerous occasions, for example a million times, before wear and tear affect its functioning.
- the recommended mechanism includes a set of pistons which fit into each other and a calibrated leak at the head of a piston to allow a gradual flow of a hydraulic force transmission fluid from braking.
- This progressive leak makes it possible to calibrate the maintenance in decay of the braking force while the pressure of the foot has been released on the brake pedal. Since such a calibrated leak is not subject to wear due to the fluidity of the hydraulic fluid, the reliability indicated above can be fairly easily achieved.
- this calibrated leak makes it possible to brake an injection of hydraulic fluid into a cavity, so that a direct action piston can enter this cavity as long as it is not met.
- the abrupt or non-abrupt character results from the filling speed of the cavity.
- the brakes are released, the withdrawal of the direct action piston is prevented by a key. The engagement of this key results from the sudden depression of this direct action piston.
- the invention therefore relates to a pneumatic brake booster comprising
- this mobile assembly being carried away by the movable partition and by the brake rod and being in reaction with the hydraulic braking circuit
- - holding means comprising a hollow piston of the moving element, this hollow piston being interposed between this hydraulic circuit of braking and a direct action piston engaged in this hollow piston,
- FIG. 1 a general sectional view of a pneumatic brake booster according to the invention
- FIGS. 2a to 2d schematic representations of the state of a direct action piston in the moving assembly, depending on whether the pneumatic brake booster is at rest, in normal application (here called slow), in rapid (abrupt) application, and in rapid application release (what we are trying to modify);
- FIG. 1 shows a pneumatic brake booster with an improved braking law according to the invention.
- This pneumatic brake booster comprises a front chamber 1 connectable by a socket 2 to a vacuum pump not shown.
- the vacuum pump can be constituted by an intake of intake gases from a gasoline engine of a vehicle.
- an external vacuum pump would be used.
- the pneumatic brake booster also includes a rear chamber 3 which can be connected, for example by a valve 4, to a high pressure inlet 5: typically air at ambient pressure.
- the actuator "pneumatic brake power booster further includes a movable partition 6 provided usually with a rigid skirt and an impermeable membrane. The membrane prevents the pneumatic communication between the two chambers.
- the partition 6 is pierced with an orifice watertight 7 to allow a moving element 8 to pass through.
- the element 8 is mechanically connected on the one hand by a brake rod 9 to a brake pedal, and secondly to a hydraulic braking circuit 10.
- the principle of the assistance provided by such a pneumatic brake booster is as follows. Under the action of the rod 9, the moving element 8 plunges into the rear chamber by releasing the valve 4 by which the ambient air is introduced into the rear chamber 3. The ambient air then exerts pressure on the partition 6 which drives, in addition to the action of a support 11 integral with the rod 9, the movable assembly 8 so that one end 12 of the latter actuates the hydraulic braking circuit 10.
- the invention is , in the present case of a mechanical solution, mainly characterized by the structure of the moving assembly. Initially we will 'describe a favorite of the moving element carrying, and then explain how certain variants may derive.
- the represented part of the hydraulic circuit 10 shows a master cylinder 13 with in a known manner a set of non-return valves and a main cylindrical pressure chamber 14. The hydraulic fluid under pressure in the chamber 14 is distributed to the brakes by the rest of the circuit 10 which is not shown.
- the movable element 8 comprises a hollow piston 15.
- the hollow piston 15 is pushed by its base 16 which rests against the movable partition by a support 17.
- the piston 15 pushes its end 12 into the main chamber 14 causing the distribution of the brake fluid.
- the piston 15 is hollow and has an internal chamber 19 connected by a calibrated leak 20, produced in the end 12, with the main chamber 14 of the master cylinder.
- a calibrated leak 20 produced in the end 12, with the main chamber 14 of the master cylinder.
- the chamber 19 is cylindrical and receives, at its end opposite to the arrival of the leak 20, a direct action piston 21 which enters into reaction on the one hand with the fluid which fills the chamber 19 and on the other hand with the support 11
- the direct action piston 21 has an anvil 22 which comes to rest on a movable cage 23 interposed between the support 1 1 and the top of the anvil 22.
- the rod 9 presses on the cage 23 which itself presses on the anvil 22 which pushes the piston 21 back into the chamber 19.
- the latter then opposes the flow by the leakage 20 of the fluid hydraulics from chamber 14.
- the system thus presented then results in a balance of forces: the force exerted by the brake pedal is proportional to the section of chamber 19 (via the direct action piston), then that the force applied by the braking assistance is proportional to the section of the chamber 14 (for the same pressure in the two chambers).
- the pressures being equal, at least in static behavior or at low braking speed, the assistance ratio provided by such a system is constant. It is equal to the surface ratio of these two sections.
- FIGS. 2a to 2d will make it easier to explain the operation of the mobile assembly of the invention.
- these figures show a ring 24 mounted inside the hollow piston 15.
- this ring 24 has a peripheral elastic extension 25 intended to be plugged in automatically in a corresponding retainer made inside the hollow piston 15, on the inner periphery on the side of the base 16 of the latter.
- the direct action piston 21 for its part has a seal 26 to prevent leakage of hydraulic fluid coming from the chamber 19 and a thrust ring 27.
- a helical spring 28 bears on the one hand on the crown of thrust 27 and on the other hand on a base 29 of the ring 24.
- the cage 23 comprises a base 30 intended to be interposed between the anvil 22 and the support 11 as well as peripheral guides 31 caused to slide along of the anvil 22.
- a helical spring 32 also bearing on the crown 27 and on the guides 31 makes it possible to push the cage 23 against the support 11.
- the front chamber 1 is subjected to vacuum as well as the rear chamber 3 and the partition 6 is pushed as far backwards (right part of FIG. 1) as possible in the rear chamber 3, in particular by means of return springs 33 (FIG. 1).
- the spring 28 then has the effect of projecting the crown 27 against a support flange 34 located at the inner periphery of the hollow piston 15.
- the spring 32 pushes back the uprights 29 so that the cage 23 bears against the support 11.
- the cage 23 comprises a set of peripheral balls mounted in the uprights 31. These peripheral balls have a diameter greater than the thickness of the cylindrical uprights 31. These peripheral balls 36 are located in these uprights at a place such that at rest they are placed opposite the inside of the ring 24. Consequently the balls 36 extend beyond the inside of the cage 23, between the uprights 31.
- the head of the anvil preferably chamfered with a chamfer 37, bears against these balls 36 and pushed them back into their housing in the uprights 31 of the cage 23. The balls then transmit the force of the anvil 22 to the base 30 of the cage 23 , which comes to bear against the support 11.
- the cage 23 and in particular its base 30 have slid in the ring 24 so that the balls 36 are located beyond the base 29 of this ring.
- the ring 24 has a chamfer 38 at its base, inside, to receive the balls 36.
- the cage 23 has been moved from its position relative to the ring 24, before the anvil head 22 comes to bear against the base 30 of this cage 23.
- the chamfer 37 of the anvil head 22 has pushed the balls 36 outwards from the uprights 31 so as to allow direct support of the anvil head 22 against the bottom of the base 30.
- the braking occurs under the same conditions as in Figure 2b. Balance is established between the effort exerted by the foot via the support 11 and the assistance effort obtained by the displacement of the hollow piston 15 in the main chamber 14.
- FIG. 3a shows in detail the start of the rapid application.
- the crown 27 is no longer in abutment against the support 34, in a similar manner to that which occurs in FIG. 2b.
- the difference between the two situations is the mode of transmission of the force of the foot: by means of the balls 36 and the uprights 31 in the context of FIG. 2b, by means of the bottom of the base 30 in the context of Figure 2c.
- Figure 3a shows in detail the chamfers 38 of the ring 24 allowing the retraction of the balls 36 at the time of the abrupt support.
- Figure 2d shows the true effect sought by the invention. This figure corresponds to the awkward relaxation of the driver, who we know will be followed by a subsequent press, possibly abrupt too. This relaxation is materialized by the gap present between the support 11 and the base 30 of the cage 23. Normally under these conditions, the direct action piston 21 should go back up, the chamber 19 should enlarge, thereby lowering the pressure in the chamber 14. This drop in pressure in the chamber 14 would of course itself release the braking.
- FIG. 3b shows precisely the support 39 of the anvil 22 against the bottom 30, the support 40 of the uprights 31 on the balls 36 as well as the support 41 of these balls 36 on the chamfers 38.
- the duration of braking maintenance can be adjusted during a rapid application return without braking. .
- the base 30 is solid and that the uprights 31 have slots forming a housing for the balls 36 and that these cylindrical uprights 31 are fixed by the tops of these slots to the base 30, for example by gluing or by screwing through.
- the windows cleared by these slots have partly spherical shapes, with a diameter greater than the diameter of the balls. Therefore the balls 36 are movable there and can occupy a position or the other corresponding to Figures 2b or 2c respectively. These windows nevertheless have edges to prevent the balls from escaping.
- the realization of a key whose role is played here by the balls 36 can also take different forms.
- this key can be replaced by a lever taking into account the relative positions of the movable cage 23 relative to the ring 24. Different shapes are possible.
- the balls 36 can be replaced by an elastic ring provided with supports penetrating inside the uprights 31 to be placed in front of the passage of the anvil 22.
