Abstract

The present invention refers to a method and respective apparatus for the recovery of the free metal present in hot dross which is produced when non-ferrous metals are processed at temperatures above their melting point. The method consists of charging the hot dross collected from the liquid bath surface of holding or melting furnaces, directly into an equipment provided with thermal insulation and means for control of its internal atmosphere. This operation is followed by the transportation of such an equipment to a processing unit located not far from the site were the dross has been generated. The processing unit being provided with transfer devices and one or more sealed rotary furnaces provided with controlled atmosphere, which work in the accumulation and agitation of the dross, and the subsequent separation of the free metal contained therein. The equipment used in the recovery of non-ferrous metals present in dross, object of the present invention, consists of a recipient provided with thermally insulated walls, and a cover also thermally insulated that is well adjusted to the body of the recipient, and is provided with an inert gas injection port, a lifting and transfer device for removing the dross from the recipient into a feeding device well adjusted to the door of a sealed furnace that acts both as a dross accumulator and in the free metal separation from dross.

Claims

- 8 -AMENDED CLAIMS[received by the International Bureau on 8 October 2002 (08.10.02); original claims 1-8 replaced by new claims 1-8 (2 pages)]
1. A method and equipment for treating non-ferrous metal dross containing recoverable metal, in order to reclaim the said metal in dross processing units containing one or more dross treating furnaces which are provided with external heat source, the said method being characterised by the following steps: (i) collecting the dross (5) immediately after it is removed from the source wherein it was generated, while the dross is still hot, directly into a non-rotated and non-agitated collection recipient (3) which is sealed to substantially prevent the entrance of atmospheric air into its cavity, thereby preventing substantial loss of metal which might otherwise occur as a consequence of exothermic reaction between the metal and oxygen from air, and thermally insulated to substantially preserve the heat content of the hot dross, while the dross (5) is held in the collection recipient; (ii) being the collection recipient (3) totally or partially loaded, temporally storing or immediately transporting the recipient to a dross processing unit that contains one or more rotary furnaces (6) in order to promote the separation of the recoverable metal from dross (5); (iii) transferring the hot dross (5) into a processing furnace (6) which accumulates a large enough amount of dross and in which any necessary dross temperature adjustment to a temperature level above the melting point of the recoverable metal can be carried out using an external heat source; (iv) promoting the separation of recoverable metal from the dross (5) as a liquid bath at the bottom of the furnace (6); (v) removing the liquid metal from the processing furnace (6); and (vi) removing the solid non-metallic residues remaining in the processing furnace (6) which is in this way made available for accumulating and treating new loads of hot dross.
2. A method and equipment for treating dross of non-ferrous metal, characterised by the equipment used for the collection of hot dross (5) immediately after it is removed from the source wherein it was generated to be a non-agitated and non-rotated recipient provided with thermally insulated side walls (20), internally inclined at an angle (α) greater than 90° with respect to the bottom (33) of the recipient, and closed with a top cover (23) to substantially preserve the heat content of the hot dross, and having, when closed, the top cover borders immersed into a powder seal box (31) to substantially prevent surrounding air, and therefore oxygen, to enter the recipient, thereby substantially preventing exothermic reactions to occur which might consume part or the total of the recoverable metal present in the hot dross.
3. A method and equipment for treating dross of non-ferrous metal according to claim 1 or 2, characterised by the top cover (23) to contain one or more inert gas injection ports (27); the inert gas being fed into the recipient in order to promote a slightly positive pressure in order to prevent surrounding air, and therefore oxygen, to penetrate in the cavity of the recipient, thereby avoiding exothermic reactions to occur which might consume part or the total of the recoverable metal present in the hot dross. 9 -
4. A method and equipment for treating dross of non-ferrous metal according to claims 2 or 3, characterised by the powder used in the powder seal box (31) of the recipient (3) to be composed by an oxide of the metal being processed, like aluminium oxide powder in case of recovering aluminium from dross, or a fine powder extracted from the non- metallic residues (9) resulting from the metal recovery process, or by any other powder which might be convenient for the process, as for example a powder which presents capacity for oxygen absorption.
5. A method and equipment for treating dross of non-ferrous metal according to claims 1 or 2, characterised by the equipment used for the collection of the hot dross to be provided with guiding holes (21) for lif ing and transportation by an appropriate vehicle or equivalent means, or, alternatively, provided with wheels (32) for free movement over the floor, or guided movement over rails, and with supports (22) for lifting and unloading the dross (5) directly into the interior of a rotary furnace (6), or over any ancillary transfer device (7); and handles (30), which may include or not pivots (25) and counterweights (26) on the thermally insulated top cover (23).
6. A method and equipment for collecting and cooling dross of -non-ferrous metal, containing recoverable metal, in order to promote a quiescent cooling of the dross, which is characterised by: (i) the equipment used for the collection of hot dross (5) immediately after it is removed from the source wherein it was generated to be a non- .agitated .and non-rotated recipient provided with side walls (2) w ch^re internally inclined at an angle (α) greater than 90° with respect to the bottom of the recipient, and a top cover (23) that when closed have its borders immersed into a powder seal box (31) to substantially prevent surrounding air, and therefore oxygen, to enter the recipient, thereby substantially preventing exothermic reactions to occur which might consume part or the total of the recoverable metal present in the dross; and (ii) being the collection recipient (3) totally or partially loaded, temporally storing the recipient (3) at least until the temperature of the dross (5) has reached a low enough value for self-propagating exothermic reactions not to occur.
7. A method and equipment for collecting and cooling dross of non-ferrous metal according to claim 6, characterised by the top cover (23) to contain one or more inert gas injection ports (27).
8. A method and equipment for collecting and cooling dross of non-ferrous metal according to claim 6 or 7, characterised by the powder used in the powder seal box (31) of the recipient (3) to be composed by an oxide of the metal being processed, like aluminium oxide powder in case of recovering aluminium from dross, or a fine powder extracted from the non-metallic residues (9) resulting from the metal recovery process, or by any other powder which might be convenient for the process, as for example a powder which presents capacity for oxygen absorption.
