Abstract

A support for a violin or viola comprising clip means (24) adapted to be connected to the instrument and a strap (21) for passing around the body or neck of the user: In use, the clip means (24) are connected to the instrument and the strap (21) is connected to the clip means. This allows the instrument to sit on the shoulder in a playing position with no other support required.

Description

Violin Support Clip & Strap.
This invention relates to improvements in devices of support for the violin & viola.
The conventional method for supporting a violin whilst playing has been to use a combination of chin, shoulder & hand to hold the instrument in the desired position. Other devices have been invented to assist the violinist such as then chin rest and the shoulder rest. However, all of these popular devices still rely on an interaction between the chin, shoulder and the hand. For many people this can result in neck, chin, shoulder or arm strain and restricted movement of the noting hand.
These problems are overcome by the present invention which allows the violin to be supported in the desired position without the use of chin, neck or noting hand.
In the first aspect the invention provides an apparatus for supporting a violin, or the like, comprising a clip means adapted to connection to a violin, or the like, and the strap is connected to the clip means.
Preferably, the clip means includes clamping means for connecting the clip means to the violin or the like. The clip means also includes a slotted plate sized to be able to receive the strap. In this way, the strap can be releasably connected to the clip means.
The clip means can be made of any suitable material such as metal or plastic, or a combination of the two. The clip is designed to attach to the violin in a G-clamp fashion where opposing metal strips are tension adjusted by means of a screw. On the back of the clamp a slotted plate is set into which the strap is inserted.
The violin strap is comprised of a belt made from flexible material such as cloth, synthetics or leather and is fitted with a tension adjusting clip, buckle or other fastener. The section where the belt rests beneath the armpit can be replaced with a soft, resilient material to provide cushioning and added support.
The strap is designed to be worn on the upper body from the top of the shoulder supporting the violin, then circling beneath the opposite armpit to connect in a belt like fashion. Where the strap rests on top of the shoulder directly below where the violin would normally sit, the strap is lifted and inserted into the specially designed clip which is attached to the rear of the violin. This creates an anchor point for the violin which can be used in conjunction with a standard shoulder rest as a pivot point. This will allow the violin to sit on the shoulder in the playing position with no other support required.
The clip and its components can vary in design.
Another variation would be to incorporate a similar belt, hook or clip device into an existing chin rest design.
To assist with understanding the invention, reference will now be made to the accompanying drawings which show one example of the invention. Fig l.
Shows one example of the unassembled components of the clip means of an apparatus for supporting a violin, according to this invention.
Fig 2 & 3.
Shows one example of the application of the assembled components of an apparatus for supporting a violin, attached to a violin.
Fig 4
Shows one example of the application of an apparatus for supporting a violin to a person playing a violin.
Fig 5.
Shows one example of a strap designed to fit the clip means of the apparatus for supporting a violin.
Referring to Fig 1 it can be seen that the clip means of the apparatus for supporting a violin, or the like, according to this invention, is comprised of opposing metal strips (1) & (2) which are tension adjusted by means of a screw (3) in a clamp like fashion. It can be seen that a metal tube (4) fits neatly over an internally threaded rod (5) which allows screw (3) to be engaged in threaded rod. On the back of the clamp a plate with a bend (6) is set which allows easy engagement of the strap to the assembled clip means. The opposing metal strips (1) & (2) are lined with cork (7) & (8) or similar material to prevent damage to the instrument.
Fig 2 shows the apparatus for supporting a violin, or the like, according to the invention. It can be seen that opposing metal strips (9) & (10) have been tension adjusted by means of a screw (11) so that the clip means is securely attached to the violin (12).
It can be seen that the strap (13) has engaged in the clip means between the slotted back plate (14) and the cylindrical tube of the top clamp assembly (15)
Referring to Fig 3 it can be seen that the apparatus for supporting a violin, or the like, according to this invention comprises a slotted back plate (16), with slot sized so as to place a bend in the strap (17) which inhibits movement either sideways or below the bottom of the slot (18). The clip means is attached to the violin (19) directly below the chin rest attachment (20)
Fig 4 Shows the apparatus for supporting a violin, or the like, in operation. It can be seen that the strap (21) is worn on the upper body from the top of the shoulder supporting the violin, then circling beneath the opposite armpit to connect to a releasable & length adjustable fastener (22). This fastener can be tightened by pulling at the loose strap end (23).
The strap is engaged in the clip means (24). This creates an anchor point (24) which when used with a standard shoulder rest (25) as a pivot point, supports the violin (26) in a playing position without using the noting hand (27) or the chin (28). In Fig 5 it can be seen that the strap component of the apparatus for supporting a violin, or the like, according to this invention comprises a flexible cloth or synthetic strap (29), having both halves, (30) & (31) of an adjustable and releasable fastener attached at each end thereof. The section where the strap rests beneath the armpit (32) can be replaced with a soft, resilient material to add extra comfort and support.
