Abstract

A plug connector (10) to be actually mounted on one substrate K1 and a receptacle connector (20) to be actually mounted on the other substrate K2 are provided. The receptacle connector is provided with a housing (22) into which the plug connector is to be ins erted ad a plurality of pin terminals (23) arranged in an array to the housing. The plug connector is provided with a plurality of contacts (12) having contact pieces (11) in electrical contact with the respective pin terminals and a housing (13) for holding the respective contacts. A plurality of vertical shield plates (27) are provided between the respective pin terminals in the receptacle connector. A plurality of horizontal shield plate (14) are provided to intersect with the vertical shield plates (27) in a cruciform manner within said plug connector. Slits for advancing the vertical shield plates are formed in the housing of the plug connector and the horizontal shield plate (14).

Claims

1. A connector assembly for electrically connecting two circuit boards (Kl, K2) together, comprising: a plug connector (10) for mounting to the first (Kl) of the two circuit boards, and a receptacle (20) connector for mounting to the second (K2) of said two circuit boards, said receptacle connector (20) including an insulative housing (22)having an opening (21) that receives said plug connector (10) when said plug and receptacle connectors (10,20) are mated together; the receptacle connector housing (22) further including a plurality of male conductive terminals (23) arranged in a grid pattern within said receptacle connector housing (22), and a plurality of conductive vertical shielding plates (27) disposed in said receptacle connector housing (22) in a spaced apart fashion such that adjacent rows of said male terminals (23) are separated from each other by a single one of said vertical shielding plates (27); and, the plug connector (10) including an insulative housing (13) cooperatively formed from a plurality of distinct housing modules (131-135), each of the housing modules (131-135) supporting a plurality of female conductive terminals (12), each of the female terminals (12) including contact portions (11) that make electrical contact with corresponding associated male terminals (23) of said receptacle connector when said plug and receptacle connectors (10, 20) are mated together, said plug connector (10) characterised in that: a plurality of conductive horizontal shielding plates (141-144) are disposed in spaced-apart fashion between adjacent housing modules (131-135), the horizontal shielding plates (140-145) and said housing modules (131-135) including a plurality of slits (15, 19a) aligned with each other to cooperatively form slits that extend vertically between adjacent columns of said plug connector female terminals (12), said plug connector slits (15, 19a) receiving therein said receptacle connector vertical shielding plates (27) in a cruciform manner when said plug and receptacle connectors (10, 20) are mated together.

The connector assembly according to claim 1, characterised in that said plug connector housing modules (131-135) are overlapped in aplurality of stages in a vertical direction of said housing (13) and are connected to each other, and said horizontal shield plates (141-144) are interposed between the housing modules (131- 135), respectively.

The connector assembly according to claim 2, characterised in that each of said housing modules (131-135) includes aplurality of terminal-receiving passages (19) formed therein and arranged at an interval widthwise, and said slits (15) are disposed between adjacent terminal-receiving passages (19) in said housing modules (131-135).
4. The connector assembly according to claim 1, characterised in that said housing modules (131-135) include engagement members (17, 18) disposed on opposing surfaces of adjacent housing modules (131-135).
5. The comiector assembly according to claim 4, characterised in that said housing module engagement members (17) further engage said horizontal shielding plates (141-144) between said adjacent housing modules (131-135) when said housing modules (131-135) are engaged together.
6. The connector assembly according to claim 5, characterised in that said housing module engagement members (17, 18) include a projecting lug (17) disposed on top surfaces of said housing modules (131-135) and a recess (18) disposed on bottom surfaces of said housing modules (131-135).

The connector assembly according to claim 1, characterised in that said female terminals (12) include terminal assemblies (30), each terminal assembly (30) including a contact portion (11) disposed within said terminal-receiving passage (19), a tail portion (11a) for connecting to one of said circuit boards, and an intermediate portion intercom ecting said contact and tail portions (11, 11a) together, said intermediate portion having an insulative body (30a) disposed thereon.
8. The connector assembly according to claim 7, characterised in that each of said housing modules (131-135) has substantially the same length and said housing
22 modules (131-135) are stacked one upon another in a plurality of stages, each of said housing module stages supporting a plurality of said terminal assemblies, said terminal assemblies (30) located in an upper stage of said housing modules (131-135) being longer than said terminal assemblies located in a lower stage of said housing modules (131-135), said terminal assemblies (30) being further bent at their respective tail portions (11a) at right angles relative to said contact portions (11).
9. The connector according to claim 8, characterised in that said terminal assembly insulative body portions (30a) are disposed on vertical portions of said terminal assembly tail portions (11a).

A method for producing a plug connector (10) using a plurality of housing modules (131-135) connectable with each other in a plurality of laminated stages, a horizontal shield plate (141-144) provided between the adjacent housing modules (131-135), and a contact assembly (31-35) connected to a rear end side of each of said housing modules (131-135), comprising: a first step of press inserting a first contact assembly (130) from a rear end side of the lowermost first housing module (131) under the condition that the horizontal shield plate (141) is laminated on the first housing module (131); a second step of bending a rear portion (141a) of said horizontal shield plate
(141) downwardly; a third step of overlapping a second housing module (132) on the horizontal shield plate (141) of said first housing module (131) for connection to said first housing module (131); a fourth step of press inserting and connecting said second contact assembly (32) from a rear end side of said second housing module (132) under the condition that the horizontal shield plate (142) is laminated on the second housing module (132); and, a fifth step of bending a rear portion (142a) of said horizontal shield plate
(142) downwardly.
11. The method for producing a plug connector according to claim 10, characterised in
23 that each horizontal shield plate (140-145)is provided on each housing module (131- 135) in advance.

The method for producing a plug connector according to claim 10, characterised in that mounting holes (19) for said contact assemblies are arranged at an interval in a widthwise direction of said housing modules and said slits (19a) are provided between the adjacent mounting holes (19) in each of said housing modules (131-135).

The method for producing a plug connector according to claim 10, characterised in that a male type engagement portion (17) and a female type engagement portion (18) for engaging with each other for coupling the housing modules (131-135) with each other are provided in opposing surfaces of said adjacent housing modules (131-135).

The method for producing a plug connector according to claim 10, characterised in that each contact assembly is provided with a contact group to be press inserted into each mounting hole and a tail group that is a lead-out conductive member for comiecting each contact to the substrate, and said contact assembly is molded of resin except for said contact group and said tail group.

A plug connector (10) for mating to a receptacle connector (20) of the type having an insulative housing (22) including a pair of sidewalls (24, 25) that defines an open channel (21) of the receptacle connector (20) therebetween for receiving said plug connector (10) therein when said plug and receptacle connectors (10, 20) are mated together, said receptacle connector (20) further including a plurality of conductive male terminals (23) arranged in a grid pattern within said receptacle connector channel (21), the grid pattern including rows and columns of said male terminals (23), said receptacle connector (20) further including a plurality of conductive shielding plates (27) disposed in said receptacle connector chamiel (21) between adjacent columns of said male terminals (23), said receptacle connector shielding plates (27) extending vertically within said receptacle connector channel (21), the plug connector (10) comprising: a plurality of distinct, horizontal housing modules (131-135) engaged together
24 to cooperatively define a housing (13) of said plug connector (10), the plug connector housing (13) being received with said receptacle connector channel (21) when said plug and receptacle connectors (10, 20) are mated together, said housing modules (131-135) each including a plurality of terminal-receiving passages (19) that support therein a plurality of female conductive terminals (12), each of the female terminals (12) including contact portions (11) that make electrical contact with corresponding associated male terminals (23) of said receptacle connector (20) when said plug and receptacle connectors (10, 20) are mated together, characterised in that: said plug connector (10) further includes a plurality of conductive horizontal shielding plates (140-145) that are disposed between adjacent housing modules (131- 135), the horizontal shielding plates (140-145) and said housing modules (131-135) include a plurality of slits (15,19a) aligned with each other, the slits (15,19a) cooperatively defining a plurality of recesses of said plug connector (10) that extend vertically between adjacent colunms of said female terminals (12), said recesses being sized to receive therein said receptacle connector vertical shielding plates (27) in a cruciform manner when said plug and receptacle connectors (10,20) are mated together.

The plug connector according to claim 15, characterised in that each of said housing modules (131-135) includes at least one lug member (17) disposed on a top surface thereof, and at least one notch member (18) disposed on a bottom surface thereof, said lug member (17) engaging said notch member (18) when two of said housing modules are engaged together.

The plug connector according to claim 16, characterised in that each of said housing modules (131-135) has a plurality of lug members (17) and notch members (18) associated therewith, said lug and notch members (17, 18) being disposed on opposite surfaces of said housing modules (131-135), pairs of said lug and notch members (17, 18) being vertically aligned with said terminal-receiving passages (19).
18. The plug connector according to claim 16, characterised in that each of said housing modules (131-135) further include at least one tab (40) projecting therefrom and said
25 horizontal shielding plates (140-145) including at least one slot (40a) that receive said tabs (40) to retain said horizontal shielding plates (140-145) in place on said housing modules (131-135).

The plug connector according to claim 16, characterised in that each of said horizontal shielding plates (140-145) includes at least one slot (14a) disposed near a front end thereof for engaging said housing module lugs (17) when said horizontal shielding plates (141-145) are placed upon said housing modules (131-135).
