Abstract

A system, device and method for multiple order amplitude modulation of a channel of an optical signal is disclosed. The method is effected by providing the channel of the optical signal in a mode selected from the group consisting of a primary modulated channel (50) and a primary non-modulated channel (72), the channel denoted as a particular channel associated with a carrier wave; and superimposing an N-th order, for said N equal to or greater than two, amplitude modulation on said particular channel, said N-th order amplitude modulation is highest order amplitude modulation superimposed on said particular channel at a point along an optical communication path, whereby, said N-th order amplitude modulation may additionally include a number, n, of lower order said amplitude modulations superimposed on same said particular channel of the optical signal. The device and system are designed to implement the method.
