Abstract

In a signal transmission network, in particular a digital network, it is desirable to be able to introduce a piece of apparatus in an existing circuit. This may be done by means of a plug-and-socket connection in which the insertion of the plug automatically opens the input and output lines for the new apparatus. Known constructions are either of the jack type or have parts of the plug specially adapted to activate switches in the socket. According to the invention a standard plug for telecommunications may perform the switching in that a number of the contact pads in the plug activate contact prongs which are removed from bypass contact fingers during the insertion. Thus a very compact construction is obtained.

Claims

PATENT CLAIMS
1. A plug-and-socket connection for a digital transmission circuit, in which removing the plug part completes a bypass circuit, the socket part of which is provided with a number of elongate contact prongs (14, 16, 20, 22) establishing connection to contact pads provided in the plug, in which the prongs are at least guided by ridges on either side of the mating surface of the contact pads, characterised in that in the rest position in which no plug is fitted, a number of the elongate and resilient contact prongs (14, 16) abut contact fingers (26) in the plane of the prong, said contact fingers closing the bypass circuit.
2. A plug-and-socket connection according to claim 1, characterised in that the outermost left and right contact prongs (14, 16) are able to make and break contact with less resilient contact fingers (26).
3. A plug-and-socket connection according to claim 1, characterised in that a number of IDCs (Insulation Displacement Connection) (2, 4, 6, 8) are electrically connected to an equal number of elongate and resilient contact prongs (14, 16, 20, 22) which are disposed in a parallel fashion and which are moveable under the influence of contact pads disposed in a plug, two of the contact prongs (14, 16) being able to make contact with contact fingers (26), which are electrically connected to the other two contact prongs (20, 22).
4. A plug-and-socket connection according to claim 1, characterised in that the elongate and resilient contact prongs (14, 16, 20, 22) are held in their respective parallel relationship by means of a first block (A) of insulating material cast around a part of the contact prongs which forms a reference plane for the insertion of the plug.
5. A plug-and-socket connection according to claim 4, characterised in that the contact fingers (20, 22; 17, 18) are carried by a second elongate block (B) of insulating material and are bent out of the plane of the first block (A), said second block being disposed essentially at right angles to the first block in such a way that the contact fingers (26) are disposed in the plane of the prong (14, 16).
6. A plug-and-socket connection according to claim 5, characterised in that the length of the strips (F) of bare conductor material between the blocks (A, B, C) is such that their bending is limited to a right angled arrangement of said blocks (A, B, C).
