CONTROL SYSTEM FOR PACKAGE WRAPPING MACHINES
DESCRIPTION The present invention relates to a control system for machines suitable for wrapping plastics films on packages, suitcases, or the like, and to the wrapping machine thereof .
In the art, are already known machines for wrapping plastics film on packages or suitcases, typically providing a table for wrapping onto which the package or the suitcase to be wrapped is placed, near to a plastics film source, are already known.
In most types of these machines the table is movable or freely rotatable, and it has mobile positioning members onto which the package to be wrapped is mounted and gripped prior to the start of the wrapping step . These types of machines are employed in industrial as well as in civil uses, like, e.g., the packing of suitcases in airports or in seaports. EP 430902 Bl teaches a machine for wrapping packages or suitcases which has a turntable supporting the package so as to allow the automatic wrapping of the latter during the unwinding of the plastics film provided therefrom. Moreover, from the turntable of said machine a pair of locating members, mobile and apt to grip the package placed thereon during the entire rotation, are provided to project. According to this technical solution, the shifting of the pair of mobile locating members is associated to the weight of the package to be wrapped and is controlled by a turntable-associated cam mechanism.
This constructive solution, though original, entails the drawback of being extremely complex and difficult to control . Moreover, according to another embodiment of package wrapping machine, the locating members are movable with respect to the turntable by virtue of a device connected
to a reduction gear, independent of the machine and hand- operated by an operator, in which, upon operating the latter, the distance between the two locating members is varied in order to grip the package onto the turntable . However, all of the abovedescribed machine types entail the drawback of not providing any electronic and CPU unit-assisted or the like control system so as to be capable of controlling all the outputted and the inputted data like the number of wrapped packages, the hours of duty, the quantity of employed or of remaining material
(plastics film) , the request for service by an user, the ability to converse with a remote control unit, etc.
An object of the present invention is to overcome the abovementioned drawback providing a control system for package wrapping machines providing the means to control, even remotely, inputted and the outputted data during the operation of a package wrapping machine or the like and in such a way that the same system be extremely simple, effective, and inexpensive to implement. Therefore the present invention provides a control system for package wrapping machines comprising a main chassis and a supporting turntable for said packages, characterized in that it comprises: a data processing unit; and a machine control unit,
The arrangement being such that said machine control unit is apt to provide data incoming from said machine to the data processing unit and to receive data from the latter. A detailed description of a preferred embodiment of the improved device of the present invention, given by way of example and without limitative purposes, will hereinafter be provided. Reference will be made to the attached drawings, wherein: Fig. 1 is a perspective view of the apparatus for wrapping packages incorporating the components of the control system of the present invention;
Fig. 2 is a top plan view schematically showing the device for gripping packages onto the apparatus of the present invention, in a first, condition;
Fig. 3 is a top plan view schematically showing the device of Fig. 2 in a second condition;
Fig. 4 is an elevational front view schematically showing the device of Fig. 3; and
Fig. 5 is a view schematically depicting the control system of the present invention. With reference now to Fig. 1, the package wrapping machine has a main chassis 1, a supporting table 2 for a package 7 to be wrapped being locked at the bottom thereof. The supporting table 2 may turn with respect to the chassis 1, the handling thereof being motor-driven or hand-operated. The chassis 1 further comprises a plastics film source 3 typically arranged onto a revolving reel inside the chassis 1. Moreover, at a side area of the machine and externally to the chassis, a control panel 4 for the monitoring and the control of the wrapping steps and apt to provide data to the machine user/operator is located.
At the front section of the chassis and at the bottom of the table 2, two foot switches 5 for controlling both the gripping of the package onto the table 2 and the wrapping thereof are provided. Moreover, the turntable 2 has a pair of gripping members 6 (only one shown in Fig. 1) slidadable with respect to the table 2 and apt to provide a location for the positioning and the gripping of the package to be wrapped onto the table 2. The members 6 are controlled by the actuation of a foot switch 5.
Moreover, according to the present embodiment a data or information display 8, located above the machine and so as to allow interactivity between the operator or the user and a remote control unit, is provided. It has to be pointed out that according to an alternative embodiment the display 8 may also be omitted. E.g., by means of the
present invention, the operator/user may query the remote control unit and display the requested information onto the display 8, or the latter may provide information to the user in a way autonomously controlled by the remote unit (as it will be made apparent hereinafter) .
With reference now to Figs . 2 and 3 , the gripping device of the present invention is schematically illustrated, in an opened and in a completely closed condition. More precisely, the device provides that the pair of gripping members 6 be slidadably mounted on a pair of slides 61 made integral to a chassis 62. The chassis 62 is in turn made integral to the turntable 2. Moreover, for the kinematic synchronized connection of the gripping members 6 a simple leverage comprising three members 9, 10 and 11, respectively, is provided. The members 9 and 10 are hinged therebetween at one end thereof, whereas at the opposite end thereof they are hinged to a respective gripping member 6. On the other hand, the member 11 is hinged at one end thereof to the member 10, and at the opposite end thereof to the chassis 8.
As it is apparent from the figures, a rotary translation of the members 9, 10 and 11 is met by a respective synchronized narrowing or diverging of the gripping members 6.
On the other hand, each gripping member 6 integrally has a further projecting member 13. The function of the members 13 is to lock in position the gripping member 6 in the way that will hereinafter be detailed. With reference now to Fig. 4, the gripping device of the present invention, according to a side elevational view thereof, is illustrated.
According to the present invention, it is provided that a ferromagnetic member 14 be coaxially mounted onto the same rotary shaft 15 which supports the turntable 2 and the chassis 62. The ferromagnetic member 14 is connected by sliding contacts to a power source (not
shown in the Fig.) which is externally controlled by one of the foot switches 5. The ferromagnetic member 14 is in turn in sliding contact with the projecting members 13 of each gripping member 6. The arrangement is such that, upon energizing the ferromagnetic member 14, an electromagnetic attraction field, attracting the members 13 of each gripping member 6 and thereby preventing the translation thereof in both the directions of translation, is generated. In this condition, the package 7 is gripped between the members 6. The gripping of the latter is discontinued by de- energizing the ferromagnetic member 14, thereby discontinuing the electromagnetic attraction field.
Furthermore, an electroactuator 16 connected to the supporting shaft 15 for the handling of the turntable 2, is provided. The operation of the electroactuator is carried out acting on one of the foot switches 5.
With reference now to Fig. 5, the control system of the machine according to the present invention is schematically illustrated.
More precisely, the system provides a data processing unit 17, of a PC type or the like, equipped with a keyboard for the manual inputting of data and a pointer, associated to a data and information display in the already known way.
The data processing unit 17 is in turn connected to the control panel 4 of the machine, so as to be capable of exchanging information and data incoming from the machine and inputted thereto, like, e.g.: number of operations carried out in a day, quantity of plastics material employed, material quantity/number of wrapped packages ratio, optional machine tampering signals.
On the other hand, the data processing unit 17 is further connected to a fingerprint reader apt to identify a registered operator. Upon confirming the operator's identity, the machine sets to an operative condition.
Furthermore, it is provided that the data processing
unit 17 be connected to a badge reader to record the presence of an authorized operator as well as optional usage modes by an user. E.g., it may be provided that an occasional user may effect the payment for the wrapping operation by credit card or the like, or by pre-acquiring a badge identifying the number of the wrapped package for insurance purposes .
Moreover, the data processing unit 17 is connected to a suitable cash register in order to store the data inherent to the activity thereof for fiscal purposes.
Furthermore, the data processing unit 17 is connected to a modem apt to allow the transmission of inputted or outputted data between the former and a remote control unit . On the other hand, a videocamera for allowing the sending of images taken in the surroundings of the machine to the remote control unit, is provided.
Moreover, a package weight measuring device, incorporated to the machine and connected to the data processing unit 17 so as to provide a continual control during the entire wrapping step, thereby preventing a possible tampering, is provided. More precisely, during the package wrapping step, in case the package is taken off the table 2 prior to the completion of the number of cycles required to end the wrapping process, the weight measuring device transmits a variation in the weight onto the table 2 of the machine to the data processing unit. The latter generates a machine locking signal, thereby preventing a tampering thereof. The operation may then be recycled by an operator's manual consent, however the data thereof remains stored in the data processing unit .
