Abstract

A method of altering the aerodynamic characteristics of the wings (14) of an aircraft (12). For low speed flight, a first wall portion (46) is expanded to provide an airfoil geometry for low speed flight (e.g., high camber, blunt leading edge) and a second wall portion (48) is maintained (e.g., suction is applied to a corresponding chamber) so that it follows a concave path. For high speed flight, the wall portions (46, 48) are retracted to provide the airfoil geometry for high speed flight (e.g., low camber, sharp leading edge).
