Definitions
- THIS INVENTION relates to the heating of fluid by means of an immersion heater. It relates in particular to a method of improving the efficiency of such heating, and to an immersion heater therefor.
- a method of heating a body of fluid by means of an immersion heater including the steps of heating the fluid in a restricted zone around the heater; and replacing such heated fluid in the zone by convection with fluid from outside the zone.
- the restricted zone may be defined by a shroud extending around the heater, and the method may include replacing heated fluid in the restricted zone with fluid from outside the restricted zone by fluid flow through spaced openings in the shroud.
- a heating device which includes a shroud having spaced openings, and which is shaped and dimensioned to receive an immersion heater within it.
- the shroud may be elongate, and the spacing of the openings may be longitudinal. Still further in accordance with the invention there is provided an immersion heater which includes a heat source; and a shroud defining a restricted zone around the heat source, the shroud having spaced openings.
- the shroud may be tubular around the heat source, and one of the openings may be at one end of the tube, and at least one other opening may be longitudinally spaced therefrom and may be through a wall of the tube.
- the heat source may include an electric element heater.
- the immersion heater may include support means for supporting it in a vessel containing fluid to be heated.
- Figure 1 shows a side elevation of an immersion heater in accordance with the invention in a body of fluid contained in a vessel
- FIG. 2 shows a side elevation of another embodiment of the immersion heater, in a body of fluid contained in a vessel.
- reference numeral 10 refers to a vessel containing a body of fluid 1 2 containing within it an immersion heater 14 in accordance with the invention.
- the immersion heater 14 includes a heat source 1 6 within a shroud 1 8, having spaced openings 20 and 22.
- the heat source 16 is in the form of an electric element which is elongate and is energized via electrical leads 1 6.1 .
- the shroud 1 8 is in the form of a tube, the opening 20 being provided at an end of the tube, and the openings 22, through a wall of the tube, longitudinally spaced therefrom.
- the shroud serves to avoid direct contact between the element 1 6 and a user's skin thereby reducing the risk of burns.
- the shroud 1 8 may be of a material, such as a synthetic plastics material, which is a relatively poor conductor of heat.
- the shroud may be of any suitable material.
- the heat source 1 6 is in the form of a U-shaped elongate electric element, within the shroud 1 8.
- the immersion heater 14 is immersed in a body of fluid 1 2, typically water, contained in the vessel 10.
- the shroud 1 8 defines a restricted zone 18.1 within it, and it is within this restricted zone, that the heat source 1 6 heats the fluid.
- the fluid heated in this restricted zone 1 8.1 is heated rapidly and passes by convection through the openings 22, in the direction indicated by arrows 24.
- Such fluid is replaced by fluid entering the restricted zone 1 8.1 , in the direction indicated by the arrows 26, via the opening 20 at the end of the shroud 18.
- the Applicant believes, that the fluid passing from the restricted zone 18.1 to the body of fluid 12 causes improved heat transfer from the heat source 16 to the body of fluid 12 and hence a more efficient heating of the body of fluid 12.
- the applicant believes that the invention will find application particularly in the heating of water, eg. in rural areas, in which case the vessel 10 may be a bucket, bath of the like.
