Abstract

A method and device provide efficiencies within a controller area network (CAN) by embedding commands within an arbitration field of CAN messages. The commands are delivered efficiently among network nodes within the CAN network by transmitting messages without data fields. Rather, the command and any accompanying operand data are transmitted in the arbitration field of the message. This permits the use of short, efficient messages and permits intuitive assignment of commands to CAN messages and therefore gives CAN network designers additional flexibility in programming CAN functionality.
