Abstract

In the present invention, an optical device comprises N working units (21) and a fault protection unit (20). The fault protection unit (20) includes an array of switches (26), each of which has an input port that receives a signal and couples a signal to a respective unit via an output port of the switch. A normally unused output port of one switch in the array is coupled to a normally unused input port of another switch in the array so that a change in switch state of one switch completes a signal protection path for the signal received at its input port through the other switch. The device includes a standby protection unit (24), wherein the signal protection patch is coupled to the protection unit. A change in switch state of a switch (26) is made in response to a detected failure of the respective working unit (21) so that the standby protection unit (24) can replace the faulty working unit. In the preferred implementation, the working units are optical transponders.
