Abstract

The oxidation of LDL plays an important role in the development of the pathology of atherosclerosis. The invention is a method to standardize an assay for the presence of OxLDL in patient serum by the use of phosphorocholine (PC), a readily available, highly stable, small molecule standard. PC, alone or linked to a carrier protein, may be used as a competitor or to develop a standard curve in an ELISA assay. Alternatively, PC linked to a carrier protein is bound to a microtiter well and patient sera is assayed for binding to reveal the presence of anti-OxLDL antibodies.
