  • Usually the diluent will be mixed in the bag, and semen added thereto.
  • a bung 12 is fitted to the aperture. This cannot be removed without damage to the aperture or bung.
  • the bung has a spout 13 through which the contents of the bag pass.
  • Other collapsible containers having different fittings for filling and emptying can be used with the invention.
  • the second obturatable tube 30 is sized to enable a standard catheter 32 for the insemination of pigs to be inserted tightly into its distal end 34. As shown, the second obturatable tube 30 has a low pressure non-return valve 36, near or at its distal end 34, to prevent any discharge from a sow entering the metering device 1.
  • the valve will typically comprise a moving body in a sleeve. One end of the moving body has a head, designed to abut with a ridge in the sleeve stopping the flow in one direction, but allowing flow in the other direction. Alternatively a flutter valve may be used.

  • the lower end of the non-return valve may have a snap-on or integral tapering spout which can be fitted into the end of a standard catheter.

  • the metering device 100 has a short first obturatable tube 103 and a second obturatable tube 130.
  • the first tube 103 is connected to an intermediate tube 150, which may be obturatable, but may be less flexible.
  • This tube 150 is then connected to an outlet tube 107 of a bulk container 109.
  • the bulk container is similar to the SEMBAGTM 9 of the first embodiment.
  • the bulk container 109 has a tube 111, on one side for filling, which is heat sealed after filling. It also has an outlet tube 107 in another side, similar to the tube in the dispensing container 120.
  • the second obturatable tube 130 is also short and is connected to a second intermediate tube 160 which in turn is connected to the catheter 132.
  • the second tube does not include the non-return included in the first embodiment.
  • the connection between the metering device and the bulk container is indirect, in that an intermediate tube 150 is provided. Additionally the connection between the metering device and the catheter 132 is also direct as an intermediate tube 160 is provided here as well.
  • semen is collected from a boar in the usual way. Diluent is also mixed, according to well known practice, in the SEMBAGTM 9 and the semen added thereto.
  • the SEMBAGTM 9 is now standard in on-farm preparation of semen for artificial insemination. It has an opening into which diluent and semen can be added, which can then be sealed for storage thereof.
  • the SEMBAGTM 9 also has an outlet tube, sealable usually with a clamp of some form, for the dispensing of the diluted semen.
  • the outlet tube 7 of the SEMBAGTM 9 is connected to the first obturatable tube 3. Both clips 40, 42, are closed, closing both the first and second obturatable tubes 3, 30.
  • the SEMBAGTM 9 will then be placed in a carrying device, not shown, typically a specially designed rucksack including heating and cooling means or insulation, with the metering device protruding therefrom. The operator will then test a sow to see whether she is in season and receptive to the semen. If so, the operator will loosen the upper clip 40 and allow semen to flow, under gravity, from the SEMBAGTM 9 down the first obturatable tube 3, and into the container 20. As soon as the diluted semen reached the required level, typically 80ml, 90ml or 100ml, the upper clip is tightened, closing the first tube 3.

  • the operator will then test a sow to see whether she is in season and receptive to the semen. If so, the operator will loosen the upper clip 40 and allow semen to flow, under gravity, from the SEMBAGTM 9 down the first
  • the operator withdraws the catheter from the sow, disconnects it from the metering device and discards it. He then tightens the second clip 42, before moving on to the next sow.
  • a new catheter should be used for each sow. This is the only part of the apparatus which has been in contact with a sow and therefore is the only piece of apparatus which needs to be replaced for each sow to avoid cross- contamination.
  • the metering device can be disconnected from the SEMBAGTM and disposed of.
  • the upper clip 40 will be moved onto the outlet tube 7 of the SEMBAGTM, to close it.
  • a separate clip may be used for this.
  • diluted semen will last three days and can be stored during this time if kept at 17°C.
  • the carrying device not shown, may be provided with heating/cooling, or may simply be well-insulated. This may be in the form of a rucksack or a holster to be carried under the upper arm.

Abstract

L'invention porte sur un dispositif de mesure (1; 100; 200) destinée à être utilisée dans l'insémination artificielle de semence animale. Ce dispositif comprend un réceptacle de distribution pliable (20; 120; 220) d'un volume prédéterminé, portant des graduations, et pouvant contenir du sperme dilué introduit par un orifice d'admission supérieur et distribué par un orifice d'évacuation inférieur. Un tube d'alimentation obturable (3; 103; 203) est conçu pour être raccordé directement ou indirectement à un réceptacle en vrac (9; 109) de sperme dilué et être obturé lors de l'introduction du volume prédéterminé de sperme dilué dans le réceptacle de distribution via son orifice d'admission. Un tube de distribution obturable (30; 130; 230) permet de distribuer le volume prédéterminé de sperme dilué du réceptacle via l'orifice d'évacuation qui sera présenté à l'animal. L'invention porte également sur un procédé d'utilisation de ce procédé.
