Definitions
- This invention relates to a metering device for use in artificial insemination of animals, and in particular, but not exclusively, pigs.
- the first container is a screw top bottle.
- the outlet of the bottle is a snip-top nozzle for insertion to a catheter, which mimics the boar's penis, for insertion into a sow.
- the second is similar to a plastic toothpaste tube.
- a specific quantity of diluted semen is introduced into the tube, which is then sealed.
- the other end of the tube is provided as a nozzle, which, as with the bottle, is provided as a snip-top for insertion into a catheter.
- Each dose of diluted semen is usually between 70 and 100ml.
- the other single dose container is known as a flat pack.
- This is a form of bag, into which the semen is introduced. It is then heat sealed.
- the flat pack is formed such that a catheter can be attached to the flat pack for introduction of the semen to the sow.
- the flat pack is the most recent single dose container to be introduced onto the market.
- the object of the present invention is to provide a metering device for metering diluted semen from a bulk container for insemination of a female.
- a metering device for use in artificial insemination of an animal, comprising: a collapsible dispensing container having, or marked with, a predetermined volume when containing diluted semen added via an upper inlet for dispensing via a lower outlet; an obturatable feed tube adapted to be directly or indirectly connected to a bulk container of diluted semen and to be obturated on feeding of the predetermined volume of the diluted semen into the dispensing container via the inlet thereof; and an obturatable dispensing tube for dispensing the predetermined volume of the diluted semen from the container via the outlet thereof for presentation to the animal.
- both these tubes will be obturatable by compression, typically in the form of a clamp.
- two clamps one for the obturatable feed tube and one for the obturatable dispensing tube will be provided with the metering device.
- the obturatable dispensing tube can include a non-return valve, preferably at or near its distal end.
- apparatus for artificial insemination comprising: a bulk container for animal semen, having an sealable inlet for the introduction of semen and an outlet; and the metering device of the first aspect.
- the apparatus will include a catheter adapted to be attachable to the obturatable dispensing tube, or the non-return valve, for the introduction of the semen to the animal.
- the catheter is usually a single use catheter, whereas the metering device will be used for several artificial inseminations from the same batch of diluted semen, and the bulk container will also be a single use container, for holding a single batch of diluted semen from one or more boars, but for storage if required.
- the apparatus for artificial insemination of an animal further includes two clamps, one for closing each of the obturatable tubes, if provided.
- the container for holding bulk semen will be a collapsible bag, for example a SEMBAGTM as sold by Rotech Breeding Equipment Limited, of Chichester, United Kingdom, that is to say a collapsible bag to which diluent and semen can be added through an inlet, which is then sealable.
- a collapsible bag for example a SEMBAGTM as sold by Rotech Breeding Equipment Limited, of Chichester, United Kingdom, that is to say a collapsible bag to which diluent and semen can be added through an inlet, which is then sealable.
- a method of presenting semen to a female for artificial insemination thereof comprising the steps of: connecting a bulk container containing diluted semen to a metering device of the first aspect of the invention; obturating both the feed tube and the dispensing tube; connecting a catheter to the distal end of the obturatable dispensing tube; opening the feed tube and allowing diluted semen to flow under gravity into the dispensing container; obturating the feed tube when the volume of liquid in the dispensing container is the predetermined volume; inserting the catheter into the female; and opening the dispensing tube and allowing the female to draw the diluted semen into her uterus.
- the dispensing tube will be obturated when the semen has been inserted into the female.
- the method also includes the step of disconnecting the dispensing tube from the catheter.
- the catheter may be left in the sow, with a distal end thereof sealed, usually by crimping and securing, and removed some time later.
- the catheter may be removed from the sow immediately after the insemination.
- the method further includes the step of collecting semen from the male, placing it into the bulk container, and diluting it with a standard diluent.

- Figure 4 is a perspective view of an further alternative device for metering liquid according to the invention.
- a metering device 1 comprises a first obturatable tube 3 of a flexible polymeric material, a second obturatable tube 30 also of flexible polymeric material and a collapsible dispensing container 20 of clear flexible polymeric material.
- the dispensing container 20 is of a predetermined volume with graduations 22 typically of 80ml, 90ml and 100ml marked on the side, although other sizes of dispensing container could be used depending on the volume needed to be dispensed.
- By obturating one of the tubes 3, 30 and pouring liquid into the other tube the dispensing container can be filled. It can then be sealed by obturating the other tube 3, 30 or emptied by opening one or both of the tubes.
- Clips 40, 42 are shown for closing the obturatable tubes 3, 30, although other forms of clamps or clips, or simply an operators fingers, can be used.
- the dispensing container 20 is made from two sheets of clear flexible plastics material welded together at their edges 24 (for example by RF welding or heat welding) and defining a space 26 therebetween fillable with liquid.
- the two obturatable tubes 3, 30 are sealed between the two sheets.
- the metering device 1 is shown connected up for use.
- One end 5 of the first obturatable tube 3 is fitted into an outlet tube 7 of a SEMBAGTM 9.
- SEMBAGTM 9 Standard semen storage container
- Other forms of standard semen storage container can also be used with the metering device of the present invention.
- the diluted semen can be withdrawn from the container without the necessity of adding air as a replacement i.e. they are collapsible. This aspect is not necessary to the working of the invention but will further increase the efficacy of the artificial insemination.
- the SEMBAGTM 9 is similar to the dispensing container 20 in that it includes two sheets of clear, flexible plastics material welded at its edges (for example by RF welding or heat welding) and defining a central space for storing liquid.
- the liquid can be added through an aperture 11 in the top.
- Usually the diluent will be mixed in the bag, and semen added thereto.
- a bung 12 is fitted to the aperture. This cannot be removed without damage to the aperture or bung.
- the bung has a spout 13 through which the contents of the bag pass.
- Other collapsible containers having different fittings for filling and emptying can be used with the invention.
- the second obturatable tube 30 is sized to enable a standard catheter 32 for the insemination of pigs to be inserted tightly into its distal end 34. As shown, the second obturatable tube 30 has a low pressure non-return valve 36, near or at its distal end 34, to prevent any discharge from a sow entering the metering device 1.
- the valve will typically comprise a moving body in a sleeve. One end of the moving body has a head, designed to abut with a ridge in the sleeve stopping the flow in one direction, but allowing flow in the other direction. Alternatively a flutter valve may be used.
- this non-return valve 36 is not always provided.
- Other ways of connecting the catheter may be employed.
- the lower end of the non-return valve may have a snap-on or integral tapering spout which can be fitted into the end of a standard catheter.
- the two clips 40, 42 are also provided with the metering device. One associated with each of the obturatable tubes 3, 30.
- the metering device 100 has a short first obturatable tube 103 and a second obturatable tube 130.
- the first tube 103 is connected to an intermediate tube 150, which may be obturatable, but may be less flexible.
- This tube 150 is then connected to an outlet tube 107 of a bulk container 109.
- the bulk container is similar to the SEMBAGTM 9 of the first embodiment.
- the bulk container 109 has a tube 111, on one side for filling, which is heat sealed after filling. It also has an outlet tube 107 in another side, similar to the tube in the dispensing container 120.
- the second obturatable tube 130 is also short and is connected to a second intermediate tube 160 which in turn is connected to the catheter 132.
- the second tube does not include the non-return included in the first embodiment.
- the connection between the metering device and the bulk container is indirect, in that an intermediate tube 150 is provided. Additionally the connection between the metering device and the catheter 132 is also direct as an intermediate tube 160 is provided here as well.
- semen is collected from a boar in the usual way. Diluent is also mixed, according to well known practice, in the SEMBAGTM 9 and the semen added thereto.
- the SEMBAGTM 9 is now standard in on-farm preparation of semen for artificial insemination. It has an opening into which diluent and semen can be added, which can then be sealed for storage thereof.
- the SEMBAGTM 9 also has an outlet tube, sealable usually with a clamp of some form, for the dispensing of the diluted semen.
- the outlet tube 7 of the SEMBAGTM 9 is connected to the first obturatable tube 3. Both clips 40, 42, are closed, closing both the first and second obturatable tubes 3, 30.
- the SEMBAGTM 9 will then be placed in a carrying device, not shown, typically a specially designed rucksack including heating and cooling means or insulation, with the metering device protruding therefrom. The operator will then test a sow to see whether she is in season and receptive to the semen. If so, the operator will loosen the upper clip 40 and allow semen to flow, under gravity, from the SEMBAGTM 9 down the first obturatable tube 3, and into the container 20. As soon as the diluted semen reached the required level, typically 80ml, 90ml or 100ml, the upper clip is tightened, closing the first tube 3.
- a carrying device typically a specially designed rucksack including heating and cooling means or insulation, with the metering device protruding therefrom.
- the operator will then test a sow to see whether she is in season and receptive to the semen. If so, the operator will loosen the upper clip 40 and allow semen to flow, under gravity, from the SEMBAGTM 9 down the first
- the operator withdraws the catheter from the sow, disconnects it from the metering device and discards it. He then tightens the second clip 42, before moving on to the next sow.
- a new catheter should be used for each sow. This is the only part of the apparatus which has been in contact with a sow and therefore is the only piece of apparatus which needs to be replaced for each sow to avoid cross- contamination.
- the metering device can be disconnected from the SEMBAGTM and disposed of.
- the upper clip 40 will be moved onto the outlet tube 7 of the SEMBAGTM, to close it.
- a separate clip may be used for this.
- diluted semen will last three days and can be stored during this time if kept at 17°C.
- the carrying device not shown, may be provided with heating/cooling, or may simply be well-insulated. This may be in the form of a rucksack or a holster to be carried under the upper arm.
- the metering device 200 comprises a dispensing container
- a feed tube 203 Secured, by welding or other suitable means to one end is a feed tube 203 and secured to the other end is a dispensing tube 230. Both the feed tube 203 and the dispensing tube 230 are provided with taps 251, 252 for obturating of the tubes when necessary, as described above.
- the invention is not intended to be limited to the above description.
- the length of the tubes will be varied depending on the carrying arrangement for the SEMBAGTM.
- the apparatus may be used with other animals, for example sheep or cattle.
