Abstract

An apparatus and method for transferring particles and fluids to or from a patient's body and adapted to inflate a balloon (110) inside a patient's body during surgical procedures to facilitate the identification of anatomical landmarks and to provide guidance for surgical dissections are disclosed. The apparatus includes an inflation lumen (120) communicating with the balloon (110) and a transfer lumen (130) in communication with one or more openings (136). The method permits a surgeon to empty the contents of the stomach, decompress the stomach, inflate the balloon (110), perform an operation, such as one involving gastric banding or gastric bypass, using the balloon (110) as a landmark, and irrigate the stomach to check for gastric perforations at the end of the surgical procedure.

AMENDED CLAIMS
[received by the International Bureau on 04 December 2001 (04.12.01); original claim 1 amended; original claim 9 cancelled; remaining claims unchanged (2 pages)]
1. A balloon catheter apparatus for transferring fluids or particles to or from a patient's body and facilitating identification of anatomical landmarks within the body during surgery, comprising: a stomach tube having a proximal end and a distal end; a balloon attached to said stomach tube approximately at said distal end of said stomach tube, wherein said stomach tube does not extend substantially beyond said balloon, said balloon providing, when inserted within the patient's body and inflated, an anatomical landmark; an inflation lumen having a proximal end and a distal end, said inflation lumen disposed within said stomach tube and in fluid communication with said balloon; a transfer lumen having a proximal end and a distal end, said transfer lumen disposed within said stomach tube and in communication with at least one opening approximately at the location of said balloon, wherein said at least one opening is Located approximately at a proximal end of said balloon.
2. The balloon catheter apparatus of claim 1, further comprising a universal connector attached to the proximal end of said inflation lumen.
3. The balloon catheter apparatus of claim 1, further comprising a universal connector attached to the proximal end of said transfer lumen.
5. The balloon catheter apparatus of claim 1, wherein said transfer lumen comprises a flared proximal end.
6. The balloon catheter apparatus of claim 1, wherein said inflation lumen comprises a one-way stopcock.
7. The balloon catheter apparatus of claim 1, further comprising visual length-indicating markers disposed along the length of said stomach tube. 14
8. The balloon catheter apparatus of claim 1, wherein at least one said opening is located approximately at said distal end of said stomach tube.
10. A method of performing surgery near the stomach and esophagus of a patient comprising: inserting a catheter in fluid communication with a balloon into the stomach; attaching said catheter to a source of suction; imposing a reduced pressure on the stomach via said catheter; emptying any contents of the stomach via said catheter; attaching said catheter to a source of pressure; inflating said balloon within the stomach; lodging said balloon immediately below the junction of the stomach and the esophagus; using said inflated balloon as a landmark; and irrigating the stomach using said catheter to check for perforations.
11. The method of claim 10, further comprising placing a band around the stomach.
12. The method of claim 11, f rther comprising using said balloon to size said band.
13. The method of claim 11, further comprising using said balloon to locate said band.
14. The method of claim 10, further comprising placing a band around the esophagus.
15. The method of claim 14, further comprising using said balloon to size said band.
16. The method of claim 14, further comprising using said balloon to locate said band.
