Abstract

A universal remote control system (100) for controlling a consumer electronics system (200). The remote control system (100) includes a hand-held remote control device (102) for entering a user command, such as a voice command or a keypad command. The remote control system (100)further includes a personal computer (104), which is wirelessly connected to the hand-held remote control device (102). In this regard, the user command can be wirelessly transmitted to the personal computer (104). The personal computer (104) generates formatting data in response to the user command. The formatting data is wirelessly transmitted from the personal computer (104) to the remote control device (102). The remote control device (102) issues a control signal based on the formatting data. This control signal is wirelessly transmitted to the consumer electronics system (200) for configuration thereof.

Claims

AMENDED CLAIMS

a first wireless transmitter coupled to said user entry interface for receiving said user command, said first wireless transmitter configured for wirelessly transmitting said user command; a first wireless receiver configured for wirelessly receiving said user command; processing circuitry coupled to said first wireless receiver for receiving said user command, said processing circuitry configured for generating formatting data in response to said user command; a second wireless transmitter coupled to said processing circuitry for receiving said formatting data, said second wireless transmitter configured for wirelessly transmitting said formatting data; a second wireless receiver configured for wirelessly receiving said formatting data; control circuitry coupled to said second wireless receiver for receiving said formatting data, said control circuitry configured for generating a code based on said formatting data; and a third wireless transmitter coupled to said control circuitry for receiving said code, said third wireless transmitter configured for transmitting said code to said electronics device.

The remote control system of claim 12, wherein said user entry interface, said first wireless transmitter, said second wireless receiver, said control circuitry, and said third wireless transmitter are associated with a hand-held remote control device, and wherein said second wireless transmitter, said processing circuitry, and said first wireless receiver are associated with a personal computer.

The remote control system of claim 12, wherein said user entry interface comprises an electro-acoustic transducer, and said user command is a voice command. a personal computer; a wireless voice interface between said remote control device and said personal computer; and a wireless data interface between said remote control device and said personal computer.
36. The remote control system of claim 35, wherein said wireless voice interface is simplex and said wireless data interface is duplex.
37. The remote control system of claim 35, wherein said electronics device comprises a consumer electronics device.
38. A personal computer system for use with an electronics device, comprising: a wireless receiver for wirelessly receiving a user command from a remote control device; a wireless transmitter for wirelessly transmitting formatting data to said remote control device; a personal computer coupled to said wireless receiver and said wireless transmitter for receiving said user command from said wireless receiver and transmitting said formatting data to said wireless transmitter; a computer software package associated with said personal computer, said computer software package configured for generating said formatting data in response to said user command.
39. The personal computer system of claim 38, wherein said user command is a voice command, and said computer software package includes a voice recognition module configured for recognizing said voice command.

The personal computer system of claim 38, wherein said computer software package includes: a macro command module configured for generating a plurality of specific function commands in response to said user command; and a formatting data module configured for generating said formatting data in response to said plurality of specific function commands.
41 . The personal computer system of claim 40, wherein said computer software package includes a program scheduling list, and said macro command module generates said specific function commands based, at least in part, on said program scheduling list.
42. The personal computer system of claim 38, wherein said computer software package includes a messaging data module configured for generating messaging data in response to said user command, said personal computer is coupled to said wireless transmitter to transmit said messaging data thereto, and said wireless transmitter is configured for wirelessly transmitting said messaging data to said remote control device.
43. The personal computer system of claim 38, wherein said electronics device comprises a consumer electronics device.
44. The remote control device of claim 1 , wherein said second wireless transmitter is configured for directly transmitting said code to said electronics device.
45. The remote control system of claim 12, wherein said third wireless transmitter is configured for directly transmitting said code to said electronics device.
46. The method of claim 19, said control signal is directly wirelessly transmitted from said remote control device to said one or more electronics devices.
