Description
The invention relates to a device for cleaning the ink nozzles of an inkjet printer according to the preamble of claim 1.
An inkjet printer of the type mentioned is known from German utility model 298 40 718 U. This comprises an ink print head which is displaceable along a print line transversely to the direction of advance of a record carrier. In addition to the actual print area, a parking area for the ink print head is arranged, which - seen in the print line direction - contains a wiper lip and a cleaning device for the ink nozzles of the ink print head next to each other. Such a cleaning device is necessary because after a printing process, ink remaining in the nozzles tends to dry out and then clogs the nozzles. In addition, air or gas bubbles can form in the nozzles or in the ink supply lines to the nozzles, which bubbles must be removed in order to achieve a uniform printed image. Dried-up ink and bubbles are generally removed by flushing the ink nozzles with fresh ink from the ink supply of the ink-jet printer. For this purpose, the washing ink is sucked through the ink nozzles and fed into a container for washing ink. However, the suction station requires additional space in addition to the actual printing area, as seen in the print line direction. In addition, a suction station is complex and therefore expensive. It is also known to press the washing ink through the nozzles as in a printing process, the ejected ink being absorbed by an absorbent pad. A disadvantage of this arrangement is that space is also required for the pillow, as a result of which the printer is considerably widened, and that the pillow has to be replaced from time to time.
Außerdem enthält die Druck- schrift keine Lösung für die Reinigung des Schwarztinten- Druckkopfes .An inkjet printer is known from EP 0 790 128 B1, which is equipped with a black ink print head and a color ink print head. To clean the color ink printhead, it is proposed to first print a colored dot at those points on the recording medium which are to be printed with a black ink dot and then to overwrite this with the black dot. This method may be well suited for cleaning the color ink printhead if an image to be printed contains at least some black printing elements. This cleaning method cannot be used with only colored printed images. In addition, the document does not contain a solution for cleaning the black ink printhead.
The object of the invention is to propose a cleaning option for an ink print head that does not require any additional design effort or additional space.
The object is solved by the features of claim 1.
According to the invention, the recording medium itself is used as the ink receiving device for the rinsing ink, specifically a partial region of the recording medium which lies outside another partial region printed or to be printed with useful information. The arrangement of the partial area — viewed in the transport direction of the record carrier — in front of and / or behind the other partial area is particularly advantageous, particularly in the case of receipt printers, as are used, for example, at cash registers. Printers of this type are often intended for recording media only 50 to 100 mm wide. On the one hand, the invention fulfills the requirement for a particularly narrow construction for such printers since there is no cleaning station to be arranged laterally next to the printing area, which takes up a considerable amount of space relative to the width of the printing area. On the other hand, in the case of printers of the type mentioned, the recording medium is generally accommodated in the printer housing as endless paper strips wound on a supply roll. Individual receipts are printed and then cut or torn off from the paper supply. A portion of the record carrier printed with washing ink can thus be separated in the same way as a receipt after leaving the printing station and can be thrown away or stored separately so that it does not fall into the hands of a cash register customer.
According to an advantageous development of the concept of the invention, a special cleaning pattern is printed on the record carrier, which immediately recognizes failed or clogged or no longer closing ink nozzles. The cleaning pattern expediently consists of one another alternating printed and unprinted areas. This pattern is printed until a perfect print image is visible on the recording medium, which reproduces the areas to be printed and only these printed. In contrast to known ink printing devices, a perfect print image is ensured after rinsing the ink nozzles. Whether a rinsing process was sufficient can only be seen there after a regular printing process, so that, in the negative, the rinsing process and the regular printing process must be repeated. If, with the solution according to the invention, a satisfactory cleaning result is not achieved even after a long sample printing, the recording medium section printed with the cleaning sample already gives the technician a first indication of the type of fault.
The cleaning pattern is conveniently stored in the character generator of the inkjet printer. A cleaning process is triggered by a pushbutton switch attached to the inkjet printer, by means of which the record carrier or additionally the ink print head is advanced along the print line and the ink nozzles are activated in accordance with the cleaning pattern. After releasing the key switch, a record carrier feed is connected to the printing process, which transports an unprinted area of the record carrier to the tear-off position.
