Abstract

The invention relates to a urinary drainage bag having an inlet tube (2) which is of variable length. The tube (2) has an inlet (3) for push-fit connection with a catheter outlet tube, not shown, and comprises a one- piece tube of polypropylene in the form of a plurality of segments (4) which are cup-like or dish-shaped, each connected to an adjacent segment by a hinge means (5). The hinge means (5) is an upper and a lower hinge means which allow each segment (4) to be pushed up against one another to form a 'corrugated' tube, as shown in Fig. 1, or pulled out to be spaced apart, as shown in Fig. 2, to form for each segment a 'pulled out' or extended configuration that resembles a child's spinning top.

Description

CONTINENCE CARE
The invention relates to continence care, particularly to a leg bag for use in urine drainage from a patient, male or female, undergoing catheterisation.
Urinary drainage bags are often attached to the leg of a patient, the volumetric capacity of such a bag being usually in the range 350-750 mis. The bag is usually worn on the thigh of particularly a female user, the bag being concealed beneath a garment such as a skirt when the user is female. In contrast, a male user often wears such a bag on the lower leg, where it is concealed beneath a trouser leg, which can be rolled up from the ankle for emptying.
Thus in general two bags have been required, which are gender-specific, namely one bag for a female user and another bag for a male user. Moreover, both kinds of bag suffer from the disadvantage that an inlet tube thereto can "kink", thereby cutting off flow from the patient to the bag, and, where the inlet tube is substantial enough not to "kink", the tube is heavy and is generally inflexible, thereby limiting options for wear.
It is among the objects of the invention to seek to mitigate these disadvantages.
According to one aspect of the invention there is provided a urinary drainage bag, comprising an inlet tube which is of variable length.
Using the invention it is possible to provide an inlet of adjustable length for a urinary drainage bag, so providing a bag which is not gender specific, as it can be used equally well by a male or female user.
The tube may comprise a plurality of segments which are each connected by a hinge means to an adjacent segment whereby to provide said variable length. This is a potentially simple yet efficient construction.
The tube may comprise polypropylene. This obviates the use of PVC, which can be non-user and non-environmentally friendly.
The bag may comprise a connector for push fit connection with the tube. This provides a relatively simple yet positive connection.
The connector may comprise a tapered portion with means interengageable with means of the tube whereby to provide the push fit connection. The interengageable means provide the push fit connection and may in one embodiment, comprise a circumferential ridge on the exterior of the tapered portion. Alternatively, the interengageable means may equally comprise a circumferential groove on the exterior of the tapered portion.
The connector may comprise a non-return valve. This provides that urine flow is in one direction, namely from the patient into the bag.
The non-return valve may comprise a flap valve. This provides a positive shut-off when flow (temporarily) ceases.
An outlet tube of the bag may also be of variable length. This provides for flexibility of use too.
The bag may comprise a non-PVC plastics material. This provides a user- and environmentally-friendly bag.
According to a second aspect of the invention there is provided a urinary drainage system, including a urinary drainage bag as hereinbefore defined.
According to a third aspect of the invention there is provided a connector for an inlet of a urinary drainage bag, comprising a boss, and a tapered portion adapted to receive with push-fit an inlet tube for the bag.
The tapered portion may comprise means interengageable with means of the tube whereby to provide the push-fit connection. This provides a relatively simple yet positive connection.
The interengageable means may comprise a circumferential ridge on the exterior of the tapered portion, or alternatively the interengageable means may comprise a circumferential groove on the exterior of the tapered portion. In either case, there is provided a positive push-fit connection.
A urinary drainage bag embodying the invention is hereinafter described, by way of example, with reference to the accompanying drawings.
Fig. 1 is an elevational view of part of a urinary drainage bag according to the invention with an inlet tube in one mode; and Fig. 2 shows the bag of Fig. 1 with the inlet tube in an extended, other, mode.
Referring to the drawings, there is shown a urinary drainage bag having an inlet tube 2 which is of variable length. The tube 2 has an inlet 3 for push- fit connection with a catheter outlet tube, not shown, and comprises a one piece tube of polypropylene in the form of a plurality of segments 4 which are cup-like or dish-shaped, each connected to an adjacent segment by a hinge means 5. The hinge means 5 is an upper and a lower hinge means which allow each segment 4 to be pushed up against one another to form a "corrugated" tube, as shown in Fig. 1, or pulled out to be spaced apart, as shown in Fig. 2, to form for each segment a "pulled out" or extended configuration that resembles a child's spinning top.
A pulling action in the direction of arrow 'X' on the tube 2 in the Fig. 1 position or mode moves the tube to the extended position or mode shown in Fig. 2, the hinge means 5 being effective to maintain the tube 2 in the extended position of Fig 2. A pushing action in the direction of arrow 'Y' , opposite to that of arrow 'X', reverts the tube 2 to the shortest position or mode of Fig. 1 , in which position it is also maintained by the action of the hinge means 5. Moreover, depending on the strength of the pull, or push, the length of the tube 2 is infinitely adjustable between the fully retracted mode of Fig. 1, and the maximum extended length, which is not shown in Fig. 2 as there are segments 6, 7, 8 or 9, for example which are not extended, or pulled out.
The tube 2, when retracted or extended is flexible so that it can be moved in the direction of arrows 'Z' to provide any desired lateral position.
Thus a drainage bag 1 as hereinbefore described embodying the invention provides a bag of universal applicability in that it can be worn as a leg bag by a male or female user, ' and by young or old as the inlet tube 2 can be adjusted for a desired length for optimum positioning on a leg of a particular user. The flexibility in the 'Z' direction also provides for optimum positioning round a leg, as opposed to along a leg in the 'X' or 'Y' directions.
The bag 1 includes an inlet connector 10 for the inlet tube 2 in the form of a plastic boss 11 which has a tapered tube onto the exterior of which the inlet tube 2 is mounted with a push-fit, there being an external ridge 12 of the tapered tube over which the inlet tube is pushed so that the ridge engages in a segment. The connector 10 has internally of the bag a one way valve 13 in the form of a flap valve to ensure that urine flows only into the bag 1, and not out back down the inlet tube 2. The connector 10 and flap valve 11 may be moulded from polypropylene, and the connector and inlet tube may be additionally secured together as by welding, the connector being secured in the bag by welding too.
The bag 1 may also be made from a non-PVC material, and may also have an outlet tube, not shown, of similar construction to the inlet tube.
It will be understood that the inlet and/or outlet tube in the embodiments described with reference to the drawings comprises a unitary tube of the plurality of segments and hinge means, whereby to provide an integral, one piece tube of variable length, i.e. one which is extensible.

Claims

1. A urinary drainage bag, comprising an inlet tube which is of variable length.
2. A urinary drainage bag according to claim 1, the rube comprising a plurality of segments which are each connected by a hinge means to an adjacent segment whereby to provide said variable length.
3. A urinary drainage bag according to claim 2, the tube comprising polypropylene.
4. A urinary drainage device according to any preceding claim, the bag comprising a connector for push-fit connection with the tube.
5. A urinary drainage bag according to claim 4, the connector comprising a tapered portion with means interengageable with means of the tube whereby to provide the push-fit connection.
6. A urinary drainage bag according to claim 6, the interengageable means comprising a circumferential ridge on the exterior of the tapered portion.
7. A urinary drainage bag according to any one of claims 1 to 5, the interengageable means comprising a circumferential groove on the exterior of the tapered portion.
8. A urinary drainage bag according to any of claims 5 to 7, the connector comprising a non-return valve.
9. A urinary drainage bag according to claim 8, the non-return valve comprising a flap valve.
10. A urinary drainage bag according to any preceding claim, an outlet tube thereof being of variable length.
11. A urinary drainage bag according to any preceding claim, the bag comprising a non-PVC plastics material.
12. A urinary drainage bag, according to Claim 10 or Claim 11 , the inlet and/or outlet tube comprising a unitary tube of the plurality of segments and hinge means whereby to provide an integral tube.
13. A urinary drainage system, including a urinary drainage bag according to any preceding claim.
14. A connector for an inlet of a urinary drainage bag, comprising a boss, and a tapered portion adapted to receive with push-fit an inlet tube for the bag.
15. A connector according to claim 14, the tapered portion comprising means interengageable with means of the tube whereby to provide the push- fit connection.
16. A connector according to claim 15, the interengageable means comprising a circumferential ridge on the exterior of the tapered portion.
17. A connector according to claim 15, the interengageable means comprising a circumferential groove on the exterior or the tapered portion.
