Definitions
- This invention relates to an accessory for use in combination with an automatic swimming pool cleaner of the general type designed to move in a substantially random manner over the floor and walls of a swimming pool in order to clean same. More particularly, the invention is concerned with an accessory which enhances the randomness of the movement of the swimming pool cleaner over the surface to the cleaned. Whilst the following description will be directed primarily at swimming pool cleaners, it will be understood that the invention is intended to apply in its scope to automatic pool cleaners used to clean any other pool of liquid.
- an automatic pool cleaner accessory comprising a tubular assembly for connection to, or for inclusion in, a pool cleaner suction hose, the tubular assembly including first and second tubular portions of first and second tubular members respectively, the tubular portions being coaxial with each other and being relatively rotatable about a common axis, and means for automatically effecting angular movement of the first tubular member relative to the second tubular member about said axis either periodically or continuously to vary the relative angular positions of the two members.
- the two tubular portions to be longitudinally movable relative to each other and to be biased to an extended condition such that suction within the accessory causes contraction of the spring and relative longitudinal movement of the two tubular portions; for the means for automatically effecting angular movement of the two members to be a cam and cam follower arrangement operating in conjunction with a ratchet assembly for effecting step-by-step unidirectional rotation of the one tubular portion relative to the other as and when suction is applied to the accessory following a period at ambient pressure; for the second tubular member to form part of or be operatively connected to a buoyant hub connected in turn to part of a suction hose of an automatic pool cleaner; for the outlet from the buoyant hub to be at right angles to the axis of the said tubular portions which are operatively generally vertical in this instance; and for means to be provided for enabling the positioning of the hub in a desired location on a pool surface.
- an automatic pool cleaner suction hose will generally have asymmetric portions in its length which are other than perfectly straight and the effect of rotating the hose about its own axis at a position remote from the suction head will have the effect of changing the influence that these asymmetric portions have on the " random" movement of the pool cleaner.
- a new "random" movement of the pool cleaner head will be set up and, in consequence of this, whilst different areas will be omitted these areas will have been cleaned by an earlier "random" series of movements of the swimming pool cleaner head.
- buoyant hub defined above which has a generally vertical outlet to which the accessory is attached, also in a vertical orientation.
- the inlet to the hub is generally horizontal and is rotated stepwise by the accessory to set up different random patterns each time suction is applied to the suction hose.
- This arrangement coupled with the correct choice of the length of the suction hose is the preferred manner of utilizing the invention.
- the effect is further enhanced by the inclusion of a section of hose which passes roughly through a U-shaped path in one plane and immediately thereafter through a U-shaped path in a plane at right angle to the first U-shaped section.
- This section of hose is preferably installed between the pool cleaner head and the hose connecting it to the hub or weir as the case may be.
- Figure 1 is a sectional elevation of the accessory of this embodiment of the invention.
- Figure 2 is a side elevation of the accessory illustrated in Figure 1 ;
- Figure 3 is a cross-section illustrating a ratchet of the embodiment of the invention illustrated in Figures 1 and 2;
- Figure 4 illustrates in plan view the inclusion of this embodiment of the invention in a swimming pool cleaner assembly
- Figure 5 is an elevation of the accessory of this embodiment of the invention in association with a hub in the installed condition in a swimming pool;
- Figure 6 is a plan view showing more detail of the how hub is held in its installed position the pool.
- Figure 7 is an elevation of the swimming pool cleaner head to which is attached a length of hose having set U-shaped sections to its length.
- an accessory according to the invention comprises basically first and second tubular members (2) and (3) which are coaxial with each other and also relatively rotatable about the common axis. Together the two tubular members form a passage (4) having at one end thereof a spigot connection (5) for connection to a socket end of one part of a swimming pool cleaner suction hose to be associated with the first tubular member (2) and a socket connection (6) at the opposite end adapted for attachment to a spigot end of a the balance of the swimming pool suction hose to be associated with the second tubular member (3).
- the two parts of a suction hose connected to the accessory would thus be relatively rotatable.
- the second tubular member (3) has formed in its outer surface an endless zigzag groove (7) extending circumferentially around its outer surface and wherein alternate passes (7a) of the opposed edges defining the zigzag configuration extend in a helical path relative to said axis whilst the intervening passes (7b) extend in an axial direction.
- the two sets of passes are angularly offset so that the axial passes (7b) are directed at the central region of a helical pass of the opposed edge as indicated by numeral (7c).
- These side edges of the groove thus define cam surfaces for cooperation with two diametrically opposed cam followers (8) extending inwardly from a bifurcated skirt (9) carried by the first tubular member and extending downwards over the groove (7).
- the two tubular members are spring biased in the axial direction by means of a compression spring (10) (see Figure 1) towards a position in which the cam followers engage in the groove at ends (11) of the passes nearest the spigot (5) (It should be noted that the illustrations show the cam followers in the opposite ends (11a) of the passes of the groove).
- the arrangement is such that normal suction applied to the accessory in the operative position will cause it to contract longitudinally against the spring biasing so that the cam followers become located in the latter (and illustrated) ends (11a) of the passes of the groove.
- the cam followers initially move along the associated axial pass (7b) of the cam edge and then contact the opposed helical pass (7a) of the cam edge in the central region thereof. Further movement of the cam follower then causes relative rotation of the first and second tubular members in consequence of the cam follower riding on the helical pass until it reaches the associated end (11a).
- Exactly analogous movements occur when the accessory expands longitudinally when suction is removed.
- the groove is arranged to provide eight axial passes and eight helical passes to each of the cam edges such that the first tubular member will rotate relative to the second tubular member by one sixteenth of a revolution each time suction is applied to the accessory and each time it is removed.
- a ratchet arrangement (12) (see Figure 3) is embodied in the accessory between the two tubular members. This ratchet assembly could take any suitable form.
- the accessory of this invention may advantageously the employed in combination with a buoyant hub unit (13) which is capable of being anchored roughly centrally in a pool.
- the hub unit has a generally vertical inlet (14) to which the accessory (1 ) is attached and in this case an elbow (15) may be used to attach the other end of the accessory to a pool suction hose (16) having at its opposite end the swimming pool cleaner head (not shown).
- the outlet from the elbow is preferably at an angle of less than 90 degrees to its inlet so that it is angled slightly upwardly.
- the hub has an outlet (17) having its axis at right angles to that of the accessory and thus, in a generally horizontal orientation.
- the hub unit has an integral eyelet (18) which can be anchored (as illustrated in Figure 4) relative to the edge (19) of a pool by means of a flexible cord, rope or the like (20) generally at a position opposite the weir (21) to which the portion (22) of the suction hose communicating between the hub and filter is attached.
- the effect may sometimes be further enhanced by the inclusion of a shaped section (23) of hose which passes roughly through a first U-shaped section (24) in one plane and immediately thereafter through a second U-shaped section (25) in a plane at right angles to the first U-shaped section.
- This section of hose is preferably installed between the pool cleaner head (26) and the hose (27) connecting it to the hub or weir as the case may be.
- the cleaner head has an elbow (29) having a generally vertical outlet when the cleaner head is on a horizontal surface and there may be interposed between the elbow and shaped section (23) one length of hose (30). In this arrangement the two planes in which the U-shaped sections are located are both generally vertical.
- the mechanism may be designed to create intermittent angular movement of the one member relative to the other without requiring that the filtration suction be removed prior to relative angular movement being created.
- the invention therefore provides an extremely simple yet highly effective expedient for setting up different or variable "random" paths of movement of an automatic swimming pool cleaner head which will render its overall efficacy greater than without the accessory of this invention irrespective of the nature of the automatic pool cleaner.
