Description

LOAD CARRYING VEHICLE
This invention relates to a load carrying vehicle comprising a longitudinally extending frame, a motor, moving means supporting the frame and coupled drivingly with the motor so as to be able to move the vehicle over the ground, and a load carrying receptacle mounted on the frame.
The invention has been developed primarily in connection with a load carrying vehicle for off -road use e.g. on a construction site, and which can be used to be loaded with bulk material at one (loading) location, and then to transport the material to a desired discharge location. The type of bulk material with which the vehicle of the invention is concerned will include excavated material (soil, rubble etc.; site waste etc.), and usually the receptacle will be a hopper like body which is capable of pivoting between a receiving and storage position, and a discharge position. However, the invention also contemplates use of other types of receptacle, including storage tanks for liquid and powder.
In off-road situations, manoeuvring space is often limited, and especially on construction sites, and in the transport of bulk material it is important to provide transport vehicles which are easily able to turn, and manoeuvre even in congested areas. Also, it is desirable to be able to adjust the position of the receptacle relative to the frame, so that different loading and unloading positions can be taken up relative to the frame of the vehicle i.e. without necessarily requiring the vehicle itself to be manoeuvred.
According to on aspect of the invention there is provided a load carrying vehicle comprising a longitudinally extending frame, a motor, moving means supporting the frame and coupled drivingly with the motor so as to be able to move the vehicle over the ground, and a load carrying receptacle mounted on the frame, in which: a platform is rotatably mounted on the frame and has a rotational axis located substantially midway relative to the length of the frame; the receptacle is adjustably mounted on the platform for movement between a loading and storage position, and a discharge position; means mounting the receptacle on the platform is located at or near to one end of the platform so that gravity discharge of the contents of the receptacle can take place to a discharge position outboard of the frame of the vehicle; a counterweight is mounted on the platform at an opposite end thereof; the receptacle and the counterweight are rotatable with the platform; and the length of the frame, and of the platform including the receptacle and the counterweight, are substantially the same, when the receptacle and the counterweight are in a fore and aft position relative to the longitudinal axis of the frame, so as to provide an easily manoeuvrable vehicle.
The platform (on which the receptacle and the counterweight are mounted), therefore comprises a turntable, and which preferably can rotate through 360°, in order to adjust the position of the receptacle for loading or unloading purposes. The turntable may be mounted on the frame (or chassis) of the vehicle via a slew ring.
The counterweight may be incorporated in, or by an operator cab, and during normal (straight line) movement of the vehicle, the platform may be adjusted so that the cab is at the forward or rear end of the vehicle. The vehicle may therefore be arranged to be driver operated, but alternatively it may be arranged to be operated by remote control e.g. by radio or infra red control arrangement. The mass of the motor may also form all or part of the counterweight, and preferably is arranged adjacent to the cab.
The receptacle may comprise a hopper which is preferably pivotally mounted at one end on the platform so that its contents can be discharged by simple tipping movement.
The moving means, which supports the frame or chassis of the vehicle, may- comprise sets of wheels. However, a particularly preferred arrangement comprises a set of endless tracks which extend lengthwise through a distance substantially equal to the length of the chassis, or to the overall length of the vehicle. This provides a compact, and easily manoeuvrable vehicle.
According to a further aspect of the invention, the receptacle remains fixed relative to the platform, and discharge means e.g. a discharge conveyor may be arranged to discharge the contents of the receptacle when required.
A preferred embodiment of load carrying vehicle according to the invention will now be described by way of example only, with reference to the accompanying drawings in which: Figure 1 is a side view of the vehicle, with an operator cab and load carrying receptacle taking up a fore and aft position with respect to the direction of straight line travel of the vehicle; and
Figure 2 is a rear view of the vehicle, but showing the operator cab and receptacle adjusted through 90°, to take up a discharge position for unloading the contents of the receptacle outboard of the chassis of the vehicle.
Referring now to the drawings, a preferred embodiment of load carrying vehicle is designated generally by reference 10, and comprises a frame or chassis 11 having a longitudinal axis extending parallel to the direction of straight line i.e. none steered) movement of the vehicle. A motor (not shown in detail) is provided, and a drive coupling is provided between the motor and any suitable moving means provided to support the chassis and operative to move the vehicle over the ground. A load carrying receptacle 12 is mounted on the vehicle, and serves to be loaded with bulk material, to store such material during movement of the vehicle from one location to another, and then to unload the contents by suitable outward tipping movement of the receptacle.
The moving means, in the preferred arrangement, comprises a set of endless tracks 13 which extend substantially throughout the length of the chassis 11, and also substantially throughout the same distance as the overall length of the vehicle, as can be seen in Figure 1. This provides a highly manoeuvrable vehicle, which can move in a congested area e.g. on a construction site, to take up loading and unloading positions, and also to transport bulk material from one position to another.
The receptacle 12, which in the illustrated arrangement is a tipping hopper, is mounted on one end of a rotatable platform 14 via a pivot mounting 15, and at an opposite end of the platform 14 to that at which the pivot mounting 15 is provided, there is arranged a counterweight designated generally by reference 16, and which may be incorporated in, or formed by a driver's cab. The motor may be arranged on the platform, preferably alongside the cab, and so as to form all or part of the counterweight. The platform 14 is rotatably mounted on the chassis 11 to rotate about an upright axis 17 which is located substantially mid-way relative to the overall length of the chassis 13. When the vehicle 10 is standing on level ground, axis 17 will be a vertical axis. 01/58716
The receptacle (hopper) 12 is therefore adjustably mounted on the platform 14 for movement between a loading and storage position, as shown in Figure 1, and a tipped discharge position, shown in Figure 2. The pivot mounting 15 is located at or near to one end of the platform 14, so that gravity discharge of the contents of the hopper can take place by tipping movement so that the contents fall on to a discharge point located outboard of the chassis of the vehicle.
The counterweight/cab 16 balances the hopper 12 (and its contents), and these are both mounted on the platform 14 for rotation therewith, and Figure 1 shows the platform 14 adjusted to a position about the axis 17 in which the counterweight/cab 16 is located at the forward end of the vehicle, and the hopper 12 is located in such a position that, upon tipping, rearward discharge of the contents can take place. Figure 2 shows the platform 14 rotated through approximately 90°, and also shows the hopper 12 in a tipping position, whereby the hopper content can be discharged to one side of the vehicle. As an alternative to a hopper, the receptacle may comprise a tank arranged to store liquid or powder contents.
As an alternative to an adjustable mounting of the receptacle, it may be fixed relative to the platform, and discharge means e.g. a discharge conveyor may be arranged to discharge the contents of the receptacle.
