Definitions
- the invention relates to pulleys, and more particularly, to stamped and spun sheet metal pulleys for trucks.
- Prior art pulleys are generally cast as a single piece to meet the strength requirements for truck service. Casting results in a relatively heavy and expensive pulley. Examples of prior art metal pulleys include US patent 3,962,926 to Kotlar and US patent 3,945, 102 to Kotlar.
- What is needed is a sheet metal combination truck pulley having stamped and spun sheet metal sections assembled to form a combination pulley. What is needed is a sheet metal combination truck pulley having a wide flange under each belt surface. What is needed is a sheet metal combination truck pulley having a spun metal belt surface. What is needed is a sheet metal combination truck pulley that is relatively light weight. The present invention meets these needs.
- the primary aspect of the invention is to provide a sheet metal combination pulley having stamped and spun sheet metal sections assembled to form a combination pulley.
- Another aspect of the invention is to provide a sheet metal combination pulley having a wide flange under each belt surface. Another aspect of the invention is to provide a sheet metal combination pulley having a spun metal belt surface. Another aspect of the invention is to provide a sheet metal combination pulley that is relatively light weight.
- the invention comprises a multiple piece sheet metal pulley having a split metal (center web) design. Pulley sections are stamped out of sheet metal. The belt bearing surface is then spun onto the flat outer edge of each stamped pulley section. A wide flange extends beneath each belt bearing section. The wide flange stiffens the pulley thereby reducing the deforming effects of the over hanging, off-center load caused by the belt on each pulley. A support cup is also stamped out of sheet metal. The pulleys are pressed together concentrically with an interference fit. The support cup is concentrically pressed into the assembled pulleys with an interference fit to further stiffen and reinforce the pulley assembly. The pulley may comprise from two to several pulley sections that are concentrically assembled.

Radius R 2 , to the outer surface 35 of cup section 32, is slightly larger than radius R-i, thereby creating an interference fit between first pulley section 20 and second pulley section 30 upon assembly.
- Support cup 40 is stamped and trimmed by means known in the art.
- Support cup 40 is formed such that a radius R 3 to an outer surface 43 of flange 42 is slightly larger than radius R 2 so that an interference fit is achieved between second pulley section 30 and support cup 40.

- the complete assembly is drilled with a hole 24 for receiving a shaft, such as the end of a crankshaft for an engine assembly drive.
- a plurality of holes may also be drilled to accommodate a hub having multiple bolts.

- First pulley section 20 is shown engaged with second pulley section 30.
- Method Manufacture of the invention begins with the second pulley section 30 being pressed with outer flange 33.
- Outer flange 33 has a flat edge as a result of the pressing process.
- the flat edge is then trimmed to a desired radius.
- the flat edge is then spun into the desired belt bearing section shape. This may be accomplished, for example, by known metal forming processes.

- the example depicted in this description is for a multi-ribbed belt profile 23, see Fig. 7, although the belt bearing section can be spun into any desired profile, for example, for use with a v belt.
- a synchronous belt profile may also be cut into the belt bearing surface using methods known in the art.
- first pulley section 20 is pressed with outer flange 22.
- Outer flange 22 has a flat edge as a result of the pressing process.
- the flat edge is then trimmed to a desired radius.
- the flat edge is then spun into the desired belt bearing section shape.
- a split metal process may be used whereby the flat edge is first split and then formed into the desired profile as described above.
- the example depicted in this description is for a multi-ribbed belt profile, although the belt bearing section can be spun into any desired profile, for example, for a v belt.
- the support cup 40 is pressed into the desired shape and trimmed as desired by metal pressing process. As described above, all parts are made with the necessary dimensional precision to assure they can be press fit into each other for an interference fit. Support cup 40 is also made wherein outer surface 43 has a slight taper to assure the proper interference or press fit between the parts. Second pulley section 30 may also have a slight outward taper to enhance the proper interference or pre-load fit between the first pulley section and the second pulley section.
- the preferred final assembly method comprises concentrically pressing the second pulley section 30 into the first pulley section 20. Then support cup 40 is pressed into the second pulley section 30. The three parts are then riveted to prevent relative movement of the pulley sections during operation. A central hole is then stamped or drilled to receive a shaft. Other additional holes maybe bored or punched into the pulley web after final assembly in order to accommodate various hub bolt arrangements.
- the pulley may comprise from two to several pulley sections that are concentrically assembled.
