Abstract

A speed control system (300) or SCS for use by a driver of vehicle having brakes (15), an automatic transmission and an engine (3) to impart both a speed and a speed change capability of the vehicle. The Speed Control System includes a speed controller (10) having a software-driven processor (20). The speed controller (10) receives signals from a speed position sensor (17) coupled to a gas pedal (2) and from a speed sensor (12). The driver may select a speed control mode from a system selector (19) to set the speed of the vehicle, or commands a speed change, while the processor adapts the output of the engine to match a desired speed.
