Description

A wheel assembly
Field of the Invention
This invention relates to a wheel More particularly, the invention relates to a wheel assembly The wheel assembly is intended particularly, but not necessarily exclusively, for use on foot-displaceable devices
Background to the Invention
Various foot-displaceable devices are used by people for getting about Bv "foot-displaceable" is meant a device which is moved by means of a user's foot or feet The devices m question include, not necessarily exclusively. roller skates, in-line skates, skateboards, or the like The wheel assembly, in accordance with the invention, is intended for use with such devices However, those skilled in the art will readily appreciate that the wheel assembly, constructed in accordance with the invention, could also be used on other devices, for example, foot-propelled scooters or other such devices A problem with wheel assemblies for such devices is that high forces are generated in the use of these devices These forces are transmitted through rigid parts of the wheel assembly into a user's foot This causes vibration and discomfort to the user's foot In addition, these vibrations reduce the life of such wheel assemblies necessitating their regular replacement
Summary of the Invention
According to the invention, there is provided a wheel assemblv which includes a substantially disc-shaped hub. and a surface-engaging portion secured fast with the hub. the hub having an inner diameter less than an inner diameter of the surface-engaging portion to define a seat for a bearing with an inner periphery of the surface-engaging portion defining a gripping surface for holding and retaining an outer race of the bearing It will be appreciated that the hub is centrally located with respect to the surface or substrate-engaging portion to lie on a plane bisecting the surface-engaging portion and which is transverse to a surface traversed by the surface-engaging portion, or tyre, in use Thus a seat may be arranged on each side of the hub with a bearing being receivable in each seat Similarly, the inner periphery of the tvre. on each side of the hub. may define a gnppmg suiface foi an outei race of one of the bearings The assembly may include a bearing in each seat
The hub may be a moulding of a synthetic plastics material Preferably, the hub is of a polyurethane resm material The hub may be open cast moulded
The tyre may also be of a synthetic plastics material Preferably, the tyre is an open cast moulding of a polyurethane material The polyurethane material for the tyre mav be softer than that for the hub
The tyre may be moulded to the hub The hub may have locating formations for locating the tyre with respect to the hub The locating formations may be in the form of a plurality of circumferentially spaced openings arranged in the hub. the openings extending from one side of the hub to the other
In addition, the hub may have a roughened surface on its outer periphery for facilitating purchase of the tyre with respect to the hub The outer periphery of the hub may. accordingly, have a plurality of alternating ribs and valleys
Brief Description of the Drawings The invention is now described bv wav of example with reference to the accompanying drawings in which
Figure 1 shows a schematic, sectional side view of a wheel assembly, in accordance with the invention, and
Figure 2 shows a schematic, sectional plan view of the wheel assembly
Detailed Description of the Drawings
In the drawings, reference numeral 10 generally designates a wheel assembly, in accordance with the invention The assembly 10 comprises a substantially disc-shaped hub 12 to which a surface-engaging portion or tvre 14 is secured The hub 12 is a moulding of a synthetic plastics material, more particularly a polyurethane material of a predetermined Shore hardness The hub 12 defines a passage 16 through which an axle (not shown) passes To facilitate rotation of the wheel assembly 10 relative to the axle, a bearing 18 is in use arranged on each side of the hub 12 The hub 12 has an inner diameter, d. which is less than an inner diameter. D of the tyre 14 As a result, a shoulder 20 is defined on each side of the hub 12 to serve as a seat for its associated bearing 18
The inner diameter D of the tyre 14 is slightly smaller than an outer diameter of the bearing 18 so that the bearing 18 is an interference fit in the tyre 14 and an inner periphery 22 of the tyre 14 serves to grip and retain the bearing 18 in position relative to the hub 12 and the tyre 14
The tyre 14 is also a moulding of a synthetic plastics material, more particularly, a polyurethane material The polyurethane from which the tyre 14 is made has a Shore hardness less than that of the hub 12 The actual hardness of the hub 12 and the tyre 14 will be dependent on the application of the wheel assembly 10 For example, the hub 12 may have a Shore hardness of 75 D while the tyre may have a Shore hardness varying from 75 A to 98A The softer tyre 14 may be used on a skate board while the harder tyre 14 may be used on an in-line skate
The tyre 14 is moulded to the hub 12 The hub 12 has locating formations in the form of a plurality of circumferentially spaced openings 24 extending from one side of the hub 12 through to the other side of the hub 12 Consequently, when the molten material from which the tyre 14 is to be made is cast about the hub 12. the molten material flows into the openings 24 to secure the tyre 14 relative to the hub 12 when the molten material sets
In addition, an outer periphery 26 of the hub 12 has a machined, roughened surface for facilitating purchase of the tyre 14 with respect to the hub 12 The roughening of the outer periphery 26 of the hub 12 is provided by a plurality of alternating ribs and valleys
Due to the fact that the outer race of the bearing 18 bears directly against the tyre 14 and not against an intermediate flange portion of the hub 12. there is less "hard" material between the bearing 18 and an outer periphery 28 of the tvre 14 Accordingly, there is a greater amount of "softer" material to deform as the wheel assembly 10 rotates, in use. As a result fewer vibrations are transmitted through the wheel assembly 10 to the bearing 18 and to the equipment on which the wheel assembly 10 is mounted This results in a more comfortable ride from the wheel assembly 10 as fewer vibrations are transmitted through the wheel assembly 10 An additional advantage is that the life of the wheel assembly 10 is extended The applicant has also found that, surprisingly, with the construction of the wheel assembly 10. in accordance with the invention, the wheel assembly 10 is faster than other wheel assemblies of which the applicant is presently aware
It will be appreciated by persons skilled m the art that numerous variations and/or modifications may be made to the invention as shown in the specific embodiments without departing from the spirit or scope of the invention as broadly described The present embodiments are. therefore, to be considered in all respects as illustrative and not restrictive.
