Detailed description of an embodiment of invention with reference to drawings accompanying the specification
Referring to the drawings, it is evident that the device namely novel safe earthing electrode according to this invention contains main parts namely main earthing electrode and outer shell of the earthing electrode.
Main earthing electrode has a base plate (1). The main earthing electrode is generally made of G.I pipe of 12 Swg with an outer diameter of 20 mm in case of type 19 and o.d of 40 mm in the case of type39. The length of the pipe is 2.0 mtr / 3.0 mtr. The pipe is flattened approx 50 mm at both ends and a round plate is welded at the bottom end and a hole is made of size 16 mm at the flattened end at the top of the electrode.
Outer shell of the main electrode is referred by numeral (2). This is also made of G.I pipe of 18 Swg with a diameter of 38 / 40 mm in each of the case of Type 19 and G.I pipe with a diameter of 76 / 80 mm in the case of Type 39. The length of the pipe is 50 mm less than that of the main earthing electrode pipe. The main electrode pipe is inserted in to it and the bottom plate is (1) welded. The inner pipe is denoted by numeral (3)
Initially the complete earthing electrode is subjected to hot dip galvanization and the dry film thickness of galvanization is approximately between 80 to 100 microns. A special type of compound (5) is pressure filled between the two pipes (2) and (3). A hole (8) is provided for connecting the electrodes with copper / G.I. Strip (Earth Wire).
It is to be noted that the dimension of the S.E.E may vary according to the client's requirements. Two accessories namely earthing electrode holder and G.I terminal plate are provided along with the earthing electrode.
The working of this electrode is as simple as any other electrode available in the market. The installations of this product are also very easy. Just dig a hole of required length and depth, place the earthing electrode and refill the dug up area with earth.
The unique feature of this innovation is the filling compound (5) which is a very good conductor of electricity (approx 95% 99%)and also a protector of the main earthing pipe from being corroded i.e. it works as a shield for the inner earthing pipe and hence making the effective thickness of the pipe approx 20 / 40 mm. A sealant (4) is provided at the top portion of safe earth electrode.
A hole (6) inside the inner pipe facilitates the filling of the compound inside the inner pipe. Another hole (7) on the periphery of the inner pipe at the top serves two purposes (a) at the time of galvanization the hole facilitate removal of excess galvanized material from the inner pipe, (b) it removes the air block if any from the inner pipe while filling the compound.
There are two holes (8) on the top flat surface of the inner pipe to facilitate fixing of copper strip / G.I strip to the electrode In the conventional earth electrodes, which are already available in the market, there is no such protection provided and the electrode pipes are eaten away by corrosion in a very short period of time.
In the novel SAFE EARTHING ELECTRODE, THE COMPOUND is anti corrosive as well a good conductor of electricity. Thus it gives for a very long period of time and reliable service. This is another important feature of this invention.
This special compound is produced, specifically for electrode (cathode) protection. This method of manufacture of the said compound is described in the following description.
First a carbon of highly desired characteristic is selected and then some of the other compounds (listed below) are mixed in certain proportion and under exacting control conditions. And after few tests to check the conductivity + corrosion effectiveness of the compound, this special compound is ready for use.
The materials used in the manufacture of this special compound are as follows:
1 . Graphite
2. Carbon Powder
3. 2.NaCl
4. 3.AgCl
5. 4.CaC03
6. 5.ZnS04
7. 6. Soft coke
8. 7. Phenol Formaldehyde
9. 8. Patricia
Salient features of the invention are in the provision of chemical compound in between main pipe and outer shell. This chemical compound has inherent properties of being corrosion resistant and possesses high conductivity.
These two properties are advantageously used in this novel earth electrode. This chemical compound enhances the longitivity of this earth electrode. It is to be noted that the con\ entional earth electrode gets corroded over a short period of time. The corroded portion will loose its effect of conductivity and non-corroded parts of the electrode will onl> conduct electricit} (which is not effective in longer period of time because of fluctuation in Ohmic value). The moisture content is one of the essential requirements for proper use of electrodes. If the conductivity portion of the electrodes does not have enough moisture content around practically the earth electrode ceases to function as an earth electrode.
This novel-earthing electrode overcomes this problem, which occurs in conventional earth electrodes. During the course of time of use of this novel electrode, outer shell pipe withers away. But the chemical compound will protect the main electrode (pipe) from corrosive atmosphere. Further the compound by itself has inherent properly to conduct electricity. Hence this novel contrivance gives 100% conducting environment with less fluctuation of Ohmic value.
The method of installation of this novel earth electrode is as follows: -
1 . Dig a hole by driving an auger of 6" / 8"dia, and 6.5 / 10 feet deep in the proposed place on the earth (which shall have high humidity in the normal course-clay soils are preferred), and insert the electrode by keeping it 4 inches above earth.
2. Simply keep the ELECTRODE in the hole and fill with the soil (9), which has been removed during digging. It is preferred to add salt and charcoal around the electrode (to make the soil low resistive) and also it should have high humidity for better results.
3. Consolidate the soil with hand and pour some water around the electrode
4. From the terminal provided on the top of the electrode, an appropriate Earth Copper Wire can be taken to the points wherever Earthing is required.
5. Caution: Hammering and drilling shall be strictly avoided which will damage the ELECTRODE. An installation aspect of the Safe Earthing Electrode is shown in figure 2. The earth electrode is placed in the soil to the depth of 2 ' 3 mts respectively. In order to protect the electrode, which is protruding above the ground the following precaution is taken. A masonry work (10) is constructed around electrode and covered on the top by a slab as shown in the illustration.
The excavated soil is refilled by adding some quantity of charcoal, salt, and chemicals to reduce the soil resistant around the electrode. A plate is attached to the terminal of the electrode to facilitate multiple connections to the electrode thereby; one safe earth electrode will facilitate the protection of multiple electric devices.
