Abstract

A water canteen allowing for the disinfection of water contained therein has a window which is transmissive of ultraviolet (<290nm-400nm), visible (400nm-750nm) and infrared (750nm-⊃1500nm) electromagnetic radation. The canteen has a body, a neck and a screw cap, is made of any suitable robust material such as a rigid plastics material such as PET, PVC or polystyrene or metal, and typically has a capacity of 1 or 2 litres. A window is set or otherwise provided in a sidewall of the body, the window preferably occupying substantially the entire area of the sidewall but in any event at least half the area thereof.

Description

A WATER CANTEEN
This invention relates to a water canteen, and in particular a water canteen allowing for the disinfection of water contained therein.
According to the present invention there is provided a water canteen having a window which is transmissive of ultraviolet, visible and infrared electromagnetic radiation.
Preferably the window is transmissive of radiation in the range 290nm to 1500nm.
An embodiment of the invention will now be described, by way of example, with reference to the accompanying drawing whose single figure shows a water canteen seen from one major side thereof.
Referring to the drawing, a water canteen has a body
10, a neck 12 and a screw cap 14. The canteen is made of any suitable robust material such as a rigid plastics material or metal, and typically has a capacity of 1 or 2 litres.
The body 10 has a standard shape with two opposite major sidewalls, only the front sidewall 16 being shown in the drawing. A window 18 is set or otherwise provided in the sidewall 16, the window preferably occupying substantially the entire area of the sidewall but in any event at least half the area thereof. The window is transparent to ultraviolet (<290nm-400nm) , visible (400nm-750nm) and infrared (750nm->1500nm) wavelengths of sunlight, and can be made of a rigid plastics material such as PET, PVC or polystyrene.
In use, the canteen containing possibly contaminated water 20 is placed on its back with the window 18 facing the sun for as long as possible (periods of at least 8 hours are preferred) . Bacterial and viral pathogens that may be in the water are inactivated by direct optical absorption (causing damage to their DNA or RNA) and slow pasteurisation that the elevated temperature within the canteen produces.
The invention is not limited to the embodiments described herein which may be modified or varied without departing from the scope of the invention.
