Description

FLUID SUPPLY SYSTEM
Technical area
This invention relates to the area of outdoor clothing and in particular to the type of clothing which is used for sports or outdoor occupations such surfing, sailing and cycling and the like where it is desirable to carry equipment conveniently on the body and not in an associated back pack or the like.
Background to the invention
Many outdoor activities, and in particular water sports, are activities which require both hands to be free in order for a person to effectively participate.
Offshore sports such as surfing, windsurfing and small boat sailing use equipment which by its nature does not permit the storage of any containers for water or other fluid and consequently thirst can determine the duration of the activity.
Even sports such as cycling where a water bottle can be attached to a bicycle can be problematic in this regard as, during a race, a rider has to effectively stop racing in order to drink from the bottle and replace it after use. Outline of the Invention
Any active participation in a sport depletes the sportsperson's fluid reserves and it is an object of this invention to provide a means whereby a ready supply of potable fluid is stored on a person's body and is accessible for drinking while leaving the person's hands substantially free to carry out the sporting activity.
The invention is an article of clothing which incorporates a reservoir for fluids which reservoir is connected to tubing which is accessible to the wearer at one end, which acts as a mouthpiece, such that the wearer can readily drink from it.
It is preferable that the tubing be attachable to the article of clothing so that the mouthpiece is adjacent the wearer's mouth when in use.
It is further preferred that a non return valve be located within the mouthpiece in order to prevent a fluid such as sea water entering the tubing.
While it is preferred for the reservoir to be a bladder which is removable from the article of clothing the invention may also include a reservoir which is integral with the article of clothing.
In order that the invention may be more readily understood we shall describe by way of non limiting example specific embodiments thereof in relation to the accompanying drawings. While the concept of the invention is readily applicable to many different types of sportswear, for convenience's sake, it will be discussed herein in terms of a wetsuit for use in a sport such as surfing.
Brief Description of the Drawing Figures
In these drawings:
Fig. 1 Shows a view of a reservoir device integral with an article of clothing. Fig. 2 Shows a front view of the an article of clothing with a drinking tube attached at the shoulder adjacent the wearer's mouth.
In a first embodiment of the invention a wetsuit or other such article of clothing as shown in Figure 1 is supplied with a reservoir or fluid storage device 10 which is attached to the outside of the suit 7 by sewing , gluing or other means. The reservoir has incorporated into it a tube 11 which provides access to the reservoir and which is itself provided with a mouthpiece 12 at its outermost end and a non return valve 14 to prevent salt water entering the tube while the wearer is surfing.
The reservoir may be filled via the tube by either removing the mouthpiece or incorporating a bi directional valve member. Alternatively the reservoir may be provided with a separate inlet which is also provided with a non return valve.
The reservoir may be of any desired shape or size however from a size and comfort point of view it is desirable if it is capable of carrying of the order of one litre of water or other fluid. In this embodiment of the invention the tube passes over the wearer's shoulder and is held 15 (see Figure 2) by some convenient means such as Velcro™ at the shoulder closely adjacent the wearer's mouth.
While a wetsuit is usually manufactured of Neoprene™ or the like the reservoir is preferably manufactured from a material such as a waterproof vinyl and, in order that both hot and cold fluids may be stored in it, is preferably lined with or composed of a thermally insulating material. Any appropriate material may be used for construction of the reservoir provided that the ISO standards for food storage are complied with.
In another embodiment of the invention a bladder or reservoir is removeably incorporated within a wetsuit or other article of clothing and is preferably located around the back and kidney area of the wearer in order to provide ease of movement, as well as dual layered insulation, while retaining a low bodyline profile. In this embodiment of the invention it is envisaged that thermally insulating material may be associated either with the removable bladder or alternately with the interior of the part of the wetsuit or other garment in which it is stored
The bladder is drained by a tube as described in relation to the above embodiment and may be filled also as described above. The tube exits the upper rear of the wetsuit through an outlet in the suit and is located as in the earlier embodiment with a clip lock system on the shoulder using either Velcro™ or some other mechanical fastening means. This embodiment of the invention has the advantage that the reservoir or bladder may be readily removed from the clothing article for cleaning.
The concept of the invention, which is that of storing fluid in a reservoir in association with the clothing worn by a sportsperson, enables the wearer to remain active in their particular sport for longer periods than otherwise would be the case and also helps protect against hypothermia and/or dehydration depending on ambient conditions and the type of beverage chosen.
Although the reservoir containing the fluid could be associated with any type of garment, and any part thereof, it is envisaged that for convenience sake it would be preferable to have the reservoir associated either with the front or rear of an upper body garment. For most applications it is likely that the rear of the garment would be most appropriate.
The type of garment which could be provided with the reservoir includes wetsuits, vests and any other type of garment which has an upper body component.
Whilst we have described herein several specific embodiments of the invention it is envisaged that other embodiments of the invention will exhibit any number of and any combination of the features previously described and it is to be understood that variations and modifications in this can be made without departing from the spirit and scope thereof.
