Abstract

The invention concerns a method wherein the access points to the system are organised into interconnected cluster control units (11-13, 21-25, 30). Some of said units (11, 21, 30) are equipped with gateway interfaces with an IP network (54-56). Some of the terminals are of the IP type (40-43) and connected to the system via an IP network. The system comprises a call configuration manager (90) which delivers configuration data in response to two sets of parameters concerning the caller and the called terminals, respectively, the set of parameters concerning a terminal including an indication of the type of connection, whether IP or non-IP of the terminal. By means of said manager (90), the method reduces to a minimum the resources required for supporting the communication between an IP terminal and a conventional terminal. By distinguishing different call configurations, the system can in each case make maximum use of the IP network routing capabilities whenever possible.
