Abstract

The invention concerns a portable electronic device, such as a smart card, for storing and loading coupons. The invention is characterised in that it comprises a display unit (10) for displaying data relating to the stored coupons. It can further comprise a communication interface, of the contactless type (8) wherefrom the coupons can be loaded.

Description

PORTABLE ELECTRONIC DEVICE WITH DISPLAY AND MANAGEMENT OF PROMOTIONAL COUPONS

The present invention relates to an electronic device such as a smart card, provided with a display for the electronic management of promotional coupons. Promotional coupons are coupons that can be used alone or combined to total some value to get a discount on the purchase of a product. Before the electronic management of promotional coupons, they were in the form of cards or stamps that can be rendered to the body against a rebate.

These promotional coupons are normally given free to consumers so they can get a discount on the purchase of a product or a product of a certain brand, like discount coupons distributed or cutting to packaging.

Electronic management of promotional coupons is known in itself. The coupons are managed in a smart card with a memory and possibly a microprocessor. The coupons are then loaded on the terminals made available to customers or cash out after payment of purchases. For example, a teller may make charging an electronic card coupons by the terminal based on the purchases made. Conversely, a customer may utilize the terminal to view pay shed or another privilege based on coupons to cumulative.

Electronic card promotional coupons management have the advantage of being easy to handle compared to the good materialized on leaflets or cartons. However, they have the disadvantage of not allowing the holder to view and thus to know the types and value of accrued coupons only when he presents his card to a terminal provided for this purpose. In view of this, the present invention provides a portable electronic device such as a smart card, for storing coupons, characterized in that it comprises a display for presenting information stored coupons.

Advantageously, the device comprises a communication interface of the contactless type from which coupons can be loaded and / or returned. It may also include a communication interface of the contact type from which coupons can be loaded and / or returned.

Preferably, the device comprises interface means for selecting the display, the memory retention and / or erasing the memory of at least one coupon from the loaded coupons.

Advantageously, the apparatus further comprises warning means activated when a coupon has been loaded.

The invention also relates to a terminal adapted for coupons contactless loading in a device as described, the terminal including an antenna which transmits data defining the coupons to be loaded.

Finally, the invention relates to a coupon-contact charging method in a device just described, characterized in that it comprises the following steps: - installation of a said terminal close to a predetermined product, and

- transmission by the terminal of coupons concerning that product. Other features and advantages of the present invention will become apparent from reading the following description of a preferred embodiment, given purely as non-limiting example, with reference to the accompanying drawings, wherein:

- Figure 1 is a block diagram of a portable electronic device according to the present invention; and

- Figure 2 is a block diagram of the electronic module housed in the card of Figure 1;

In the example of implementation shown in Figure 1, the portable electronic device is in the form of a smart card 1, for example the standardized format of 85 mm in length, 54 mm in width and 0 76 mm in thickness in accordance with ISO 7816 the card may have superior dimensions to allow easier integration of all its components.

All functional means incorporated in the card 1 comprises:

- an electronic module 2 which is based on a microprocessor and peripheral electronics as will be described later; a battery 4 which can be of replaceable or rechargeable type;

(Optionally) a solar cell 6 serving as an auxiliary power source vis-à-vis the battery 4, the cell may additionally be used to recharge the latter; - a communication interface 8 based on an antenna to the electronic module 2 to receive and / or transmit vis-à-vis the outside data by radio - and therefore without physical contact - with another interface outside the map. The communication interface 8 allows to realize with the electronic module 2 a so-called communication "contactless" and optionally a communication with contacts. To perform the latter function, contact pads 9 are arranged on the surface of the card. These pads 9 are connected to various input and output points of the electronic module and are designed to connect the latter to an external drive by ohmic contact. In this case, the card 1 is capable of functioning both as a contactless card (via the communication interface 8) and as a contact card, thus forming a multi-card, also known as the Anglo Saxon card "CombiCard". The microprocessor will communicate in "with contacts" through metallized contacts to the surface of the card (usually inset module on the card). It can thus communicate respecting the ISO 7816 standard with terminals. Another component, comprising a microprocessor or not, may optionally be used to perform this function; a flat display screen 10 of the alphanumeric and / or graphics for presenting information from the electronic module 2, this information may be internally stored data in the module or the data received by the communication interface 8;

- selection means, such as buttons 12 to select the various features of the card, including surf graphics or alphanumeric menus presented on the display 10. Alternatively, the buttons can be replaced, for example, by means shaped wheel or mouse equivalents as on laptops, etc. ; and a warning device (14) sound, light or other (vibrator) for notifying the user of the card from one task to perform, for example reading a new message.

It is also possible to add to the card carrier biometric identification, to authenticate using the card. Such means may be constituted by a fingerprint sensor, for example.

Figure 2 shows a synoptic way the different functional blocks of the electronic module 2. This module is central microprocessor 16 which manages all of the card bodies 1. The microprocessor 16 exchange data with one hand interface without contact 8 (here represented as forming an integral part of the electronic module) and secondly with a storage assembly 18. the latter comprises: - a read only memory ROM 20 for storing the timeless part of programs executed by the microprocessor 18. this memory 20 can also be achieved by technology "Flash EPROM" or "EEPROM", to change the content of the program, for example, during an update of the latter;

- a working memory RAM 22 which is a RAM for temporarily storing data during execution of a program or during a reception of data from the communication interface 8; and - a memory 24 for storing data and files, made in EEPROM technology, flash EPROM (or even RAM).

The microprocessor 16 communicates in contactless mode 1 through the interface 8 and sends the appropriate signals on an antenna included in the map itself.

The microprocessor 16 thus incorporates the necessary means for exchanging data with the communication interface 8. For this purpose, the latter further comprises antenna means of modulation and demodulation of digital signals on a carrier wave, generally in a high frequency range, in order respectively to transmit and receive digital data.

The microprocessor 16 also manages a control circuit 26 of the display 10, which has its own memory 28 for storing one or more display pages regardless of the storage assembly 18. In the case where the circuit 26 control the display is part of the microprocessor 16, the memory required may be included in the memory of the microprocessor itself.

It is understood that the decomposition of the functional blocks just described can be done otherwise equivalently, in particular by giving some or all tasks peripheral organs to the microprocessor itself, depending on the architecture adopted for the latter. The coupon management system consists of several elements:

- the smart card 1 with display (Figures 1 and 2);

- a coupon loading system; and - a POS system that will allow to use these coupons.

The coupon loading system allows a large number of options depending on the scheme chosen by the operator of coupons award program.

The coupons can be loaded at the terminals, interactive or not, via the link with contacts 9 (the card is then inserted into the terminal) or contactless link 8 (coupons are then transmitted by radio-frequency link) Upload can then be performed automatically without the intervention of the carrier device according to the preferred embodiment of the present invention. Coupons can be loaded from a previous collection operation. They can be awarded based eg purchases, coupons already in use, the customer status, profile or its interests. Finally, the coupons can be loaded via the Internet network from the customer's home (connection via computer with a connected reader).

The POS system allows you to use these coupons during checkout. The coupons will be deducted from purchases made if the articles were purchased with coupons.

For this operation, the card will be read (9 contactless interface or contactless 8) by a terminal that will be responsible for comparing the purchased items with coupons present in the card. This type of reading is known in itself; it is based on bar codes of articles read by the code reader, which are recovered at a terminal that handles the comparison operation with coupons present in the card and calculates the amount of the discount.

The discount (amount of coupons used) can either be used immediately or be credited as an electronic money (used for certain services or certain stores or in some shops), or be subject to gift vouchers.

The scheme is based on the loading coupons in a smart card, usually based on various parameters contained in the chip such as profile, purchases made in previous visits, etc.

The allocation of these coupons can be done in different ways: - when paying at the checkout, the coupons found in the map used and new coupons are responsible for the next visit; at the entrance of the store, coupons are provided to the client (loaded in the card) automatically in the case of a contactless communication system. It is the same for specific terminals which may be in the rays and can automatically load coupons for special objects that are close to the device carrier according to the invention; through specific terminals, customers can load their card with coupons of the day.

One can also consider raising coupons remote, thanks to the Internet for example. In this case, the holder of the computer has a smart card reader and when visiting a specific website, the server will load coupons in the carrier card.

In all these cases, it is interesting and motivating for the wearer to be able to view at any time the coupons contained in the card, as in the case of the issuance of paper coupons.

Also, the smart card according to the present invention has a display operable that the bearer of the card can visualize loaded coupons in the card. For using coupons, they will remain secure (against any amendments) with the smart card. Moreover, the possibility of contactless charging data coupons to load messages not only at kiosks but also systematically, when passing under an antenna, for example, the store entrance or near terminals in the store shelf.

The coupons can be offered according to multiple parameters:

- selection of coupons by the customer at the terminal proposal coupons based on past purchases or customer profile,

- Proposal for seasonal promotions,

- etc. Moreover, it is also possible to load coupons depending rays visited by the client. It is thus possible to load more coupons as incentives actually corresponding to the interests of the customer centers, an advantage of 1 invention is the customer given opportunity to choose from coupons that have been loaded automatically, those of interest. We can thus bring the customer to have an active approach in the allocation of voucher program, which increases sharply 1 program impact and therefore one interest to operators.

In addition, it is possible to further increase the effectiveness of vouchers. Indeed, it is sometimes difficult to choose the items covered by the coupons. This problem is also major source of fraud in certain applications of paper coupons: the customer chose in the beam an article he mistakenly thinks match his coupon. During his time at checkout, this error but the cashier will pass anyway this error not to block its crate. Thus, the client will receive a coupon for the purchase of any article (problem of evil attributed discount). With the chip card with display, which incorporates a contactless link, it is possible to detect from an antenna coupons that are present in the card, and thus show particular signs on radii at the items subject coupons and display simultaneously on the card the amount of the coupon available for this product. The customer is prompted more and to choose these items and the risk of unintentional error is zero. Conversely, the present invention can allow, through a terminal placed near a section to automatically charge the coupon in the portable device and to activate the alarm.

Claims

1. A portable electronic device, such as a smart card, for storing coupons, characterized in that it comprises a display
(10) for presenting information stored coupons.
2. Device according to Claim 1, characterized in that it comprises a communication interface of the contactless type (8) from which coupons can be loaded and / or returned.
3. Device according to claim 1 or 2, characterized in that it comprises a communication interface of the contact type (9) from which coupons can be loaded and / or returned.
4. Device according to any one of claims 1 to 3, characterized in that it further comprises interface means (12) for selecting the display, the memory retention and / or erasing the memory at least one coupon from the loaded coupons.
5. Device according to any one of claims 1 to 4, characterized in that it comprises warning means activated when a coupon has been loaded.
6. Terminal adapted for coupons without contact load in an apparatus according to any one of Claims 2 to 5, characterized in that it comprises an antenna and in that it emits through said data defining the antenna coupons to be loaded.
7. A method of coupons contactless loading in a device according to any one of claims 2 to 5, characterized in that it comprises the following steps: - installation of a terminal according to claim 7 in proximity to a product predetermined, and
- transmission by the terminal of coupons concerning that product.
