Abstract

The invention relates to an optical reading system comprising an optical reader (10) and a host processor (900). In one aspect of the invention, the host processor (900) may be configured to transmit a component control instruction in response to a user input command input by a user of the host processor (900) to remotely control the reader (10). The optical reader (10) subsequently receives the transmitted component control instruction and executes the component control instruction substantially on receipt thereof. In one embodiment, execution of the component control instruction by optical reader (10) has the same effect as the reader trigger (52) being manually pulled by a reader operator.

Claims

AMENDED CLAIMS
[received by the International Bureau on 20 February 2001 (20.02.01); original claims 1, 7, 9 and 15 amended; remaining claims unchanged (3 pages)]
1. An optical reader comprising an imaging assembly, a processor in communication with said imaging assembly, and a memory in communication with said processor, said memory having an operating program stored thereon for controlling operation of said optical reader, said optical reader being characterized in that said optical reader is adapted to receive a component control instruction from a local host processor, and further being adapted to execute said component control instruction substantially on receipt of said component control instruction from said local host processor.
2. The optical reader of claim 1, wherein said component control instruction is a remote trigger activation instruction.
3. The optical reader of claim 1, wherein said component control instruction is a remote trigger release instruction.
4. The optical reader of claim 1, wherein said imaging assembly includes an illumination source, wherein execution of said component control instruction results in said illumination source being controlled.
5. The optical reader of claim 1, further comprising an acoustic output device, wherein execution
103 of said component-control instruction results in said acoustic output device being controlled.
6. The optical reader of claim 1, further comprising a display, and wherein execution of said component control instruction results in a predetermined indicia being displayed by said display device.
7. The optical reader of claim 1, wherein said memory stores at least one frame of image data, and wherein execution of said component control instruction results in said at least one frame of image data being uploaded to a local host processor.
8. The optical reader of claim 1, wherein execution of said component control instruction results in said processor controlling said imaging assembly to capture a frame of image data in said memory.
9. An optical reader system comprising a portable optical reader and a local host processor located a distance away from said portable optical reader, said portable optical reader having an imaging assembly, a reader memory in communication with said reader processor, said system being characterized in that said optical reader receives a component control instruction from a local host processor, said local host processor transmits a component control instruction in response to a user input command to control said optical reader, and said optical reader executes said component
104
15. The optical reader system of claiπT9, wherein said reader memory stores at least one frame of image data, and wherein execution of said component control instruction results in said at least one frame of image data being uploaded to said local host processor.
16. The optical reader system of claim 9, wherein execution of said component control instruction results in said reader processor controlling said imaging assembly to capture a frame of image data in said reader memory.
