Definitions
- the present invention relates generally to optical discs and, more particularly, to a method for identifying the dye process in the manufacturing of recordable optical discs.
- dye is spin-coated on the discs in a dye bowl.
- Some advanced commercial CD-R production lines use a number of dye bowls, e.g., three or six dye bowls.
- dye process identification has been accomplished by slightly varying the spin coating process in the two dye bowls. In particular, the diameter of the portion of the disc that is not covered with dye is made slightly larger in one of the dye bowls.
- the present invention provides a dye process identification scheme that marks each disc with one or more identifying markings so that the dye process used to produce each disc can be simply and reliably determined.
- a method for identifying the dye process in the manufacturing of recordable optical discs is provided.
- discs are subjected to a dye process in a production line having two or more dye bowls. At least one marking that identifies the dye process used to produce the disc is marked on each disc.
- the recordable optical discs may be recordable compact discs (CD-R's) or recordable digital versatile discs (DVD-R' s).
- the production line includes three dye bowls and the operation of marking each disc includes marking one identifying marking on discs from a first dye bowl, two identifying marks on discs from a second dye bowl, and three identifying markings on discs from a third dye bowl.
- the production line may include first, second, and third marking units arranged such that discs from the first dye bowl receive an identifying marking from the first marking unit, discs from the second dye bowl receive identifying markings from the first and second marking units, and discs from the third dye bowl receive identifying markings from the first, second, and third marking units.
- a method for manufacturing recordable optical discs is provided.
- a production line for producing recordable optical discs having at least one marking unit for marking each disc with at least one marking that identifies a dye bowl used to spin coat a dye on the disc is provided.
- the production line is used in normal operation to produce recordable optical discs, e.g., CD-R's and DVD-R's.
- an identifying marking on a disc is checked to identify the dye bowl used to spin coat dye on the disc.
- the identifying markings are marked on the discs as the discs are carried on a walking beam. In this embodiment, the identifying markings may be marked on the discs by contacting the discs with a stamp.
- a recordable optical disc having at least one identifying marking having at least one identifying marking.
- the at least one identifying marking identifies a dye bowl used to spin coat a dye on the recordable optical disc.
- two identifying markings are marked on the recordable optical disc without any significant overlapping of the markings.
- three identifying markings are marked on the recordable optical disc without any significant overlapping of the markings.
- one identifying marking may be marked on the recordable optical disc to the left of a disc centerline, one identifying marking may be marked on the recordable optical disc at about the disc centerline, and one identifying marking may be marked on the recordable optical disc to the right of the disc centerline.
- Figure 1 is a simplified schematic diagram of a CD-R production line in accordance with one embodiment of the invention.
- Figure 2 is a simplified cross-sectional view showing the details of a marking unit in accordance with one embodiment of the invention.
- Figure 3 is a schematic diagram that illustrates the relative position of the identifying markings on the discs in accordance with one embodiment of the invention.
- Figure 4 is a top view of a disc having three identifying markings in accordance with one embodiment of the invention.
- FIG. 1 is a simplified schematic diagram of a CD-R production line 100 in accordance with one embodiment of the invention.
- CD-R production line 100 is a dual production line that includes molding units 102a and 102b in which discs 104 are molded in accordance with well-known techniques. The process flow for discs 104 produced in molding unit 102a will be described first. Upon leaving molding unit 102a, discs 104 enter cooling station 106a and proceed to clear disc inspection station 108a, which removes any defective discs from the line. Discs 104 are then transferred from inspection station 108a to walking beam 110a.
- Disc grabbers move discs 104 from walking beam 110a to one of three dye tracks.
- the first dye track includes dye bowl 112al and edge clean bowl 114al.
- the second dye track includes dye bowl 112a2 and edge clean bowl 114a2.
- the third dye track includes dye bowl 112a3 and edge clean bowl 114a3.
- marking units M make one or more identifying markings on the discs.
- the number of markings made on each disc 104 depends on the dye track from which the disc came.
- Discs 104 from the first dye track i.e., dye bowl 112al and edge clean bowl 114al
- Discs 104 from the second dye track i.e., dye bowl 112a2 and edge clean bowl 114a2
- Discs 104 from the third dye track i.e., dye bowl 112a3 and edge clean bowl 114a3, encounter three marking units M and therefore receive three identifying markings. Additional details regarding the marking process are set forth below.
- Discs 104 are transferred from walking beam 110b to oven 116a. After passing through oven 116a, discs 104 enter finishing station 118, which includes silver metallization unit 118a, lacquer coating station 118b, and inkjet printing station 118c. As is well known to those skilled in the art, quality control information, e.g., the date of manufacturing, may be printed on discs 104 at inkjet printing station 118c.
- the process flow for discs 104 produced in molding unit 102b is essentially the same as that described above for the discs produced in molding unit 102a.
- discs 104 Upon leaving molding unit 102b, discs 104 enter cooling station 106b and proceed to clear disc inspection station 108b, which removes any defective discs from the line.
- Discs 104 are then transferred from inspection station 108b to walking beam 110c.
- Disc grabbers (not shown) move discs 104 from walking beam 110c to one of three dye tracks.
- the first dye track includes dye bowl 112bl and edge clean bowl 114bl .
- the second dye track includes dye bowl 112b2 and edge clean bowl 114b2.
- the third dye track includes dye bowl 112b 3 and edge clean bowl 114b3.
- marking units M make one or more identifying markings on the discs.
- discs 104 from the first dye track i.e., dye bowl 112bl and edge clean bowl 114bl
- Discs 104 from the second dye track i.e., dye bowl 112b2 and edge clean bowl 114b2
- Discs 104 from the third dye track i.e., dye bowl 112b3 and edge clean bowl 114b3
- Discs 104 then move from walking beam 1 lOd to oven 116b and on to finishing station 118.
- FIG. 2 is a simplified cross-sectional view showing the details of a marking unit M in accordance with one embodiment of the invention.
- marking unit M includes generally L-shaped frame 200 that extends over walking beam 110b in which disc 104 is situated.
- Stamp 202 is mounted on frame 200 with spring 204 so that the stamp is disposed directly above the point at which the identifying marking is to be made on disc 104.
- the first step in the advancement process is that guide bar 206, which has disc centering piece 208 situated thereon, lifts disc 104 above slider 210. This lifting action brings disc 104 into contact with stamp 202 and causes an identifying marking to be made on the disc.
- the height of stamp 202 should be selected to provide an appropriate amount of pressing force when disc 104 is lifted by guide bar 206.
- Stamp 202 may be any suitable stamp, e.g., a steel stamp.
- Marking unit M shown in Figure 2 is a simple, inexpensive, and reliable device for marking identifying marks on recordable optical discs, e.g., CD-R's and recordable digital versatile discs (DVD-R's).
- recordable optical discs e.g., CD-R's and recordable digital versatile discs (DVD-R's).
- DVD-R's recordable digital versatile discs
- marking unit M shown in Figure 2 may be substituted for marking unit M shown in Figure 2.
- an inkjet marker or a laser marker may be used to mark the discs with suitable identifying markings.
- Figure 3 is a schematic diagram that illustrates the relative position of the identifying markings made on the discs in accordance with one embodiment of the invention.
- the walking beam has six positions for discs: the three positions where the discs enter the walking beam from the dye tracks and three intermediate positions where the discs are marked in accordance with the invention.
- the discs are marked just to the left of the disc centerline.
- the discs are marked at about the disc centerline.
- the discs are marked just to the right of the disc centerline.
- the discs may be marked with two or three identifying markings without any significant overlapping of the markings, as shown in the upper portion of Figure 3. It will be apparent to those skilled in the art that many other marking schemes may be used to avoid overlapping markings.
- Figure 4 is a top view of a disc having three identifying markings in accordance with one embodiment of the invention.
- disc 104 is marked with the letters "AAA.” As noted above, this indicates that this disc was produced in a dye track that causes the disc to encounter three marking units along the walking beam.
- the letter “A” may be used to designate the dye tracks used to process discs from molding unit 102a and the letter “B” may be used to designate the dye tracks used to process discs from molding unit 102b.
- discs 104 produced by molding unit 102a would be marked with one of "A,” “AA,” and “AAA.”
- Discs 104 produced by molding unit 102b would be marked with one of "B,” “BB,” and “BBB.”
- the identification markings provided by the present invention also may be used to identify many production lines in a single plant. Unless the discs are tampered with between the dye bowl and the walking beam, the dye process identification scheme of the present invention enables the dye process used to produce a disc to be identified with virtually 100% certainty.
- the dye process identification scheme described herein may be adapted to suit CD-R manufacturing lines with other than three or six dye tracks as described herein. It will be further apparent to those skilled in the art that the dye process identification scheme described herein may be adapted for use in DVD-R manufacturing lines.
- the identification marking is not restricted to letters, e.g., A, B, C, etc., as shown herein but also may be numbers, e.g., 1, 2, 3, etc., or any other suitable symbol.
- the present invention provides a dye process identification scheme that marks each disc with one or more identifying markings so that the dye process used to produce each disc can be simply and reliably determined.
- the invention has been described herein in terms of several exemplary embodiments. Other embodiments of the invention will be apparent to those skilled in the art from consideration of the specification and practice of the invention.
- the identifying markings may be marked on the discs using an instrumentality other than a stamp, e.g., an inkjet marker or a laser marker. Accordingly, the embodiments and preferred features described above should be considered exemplary, with the scope of the invention being defined by the appended claims and their equivalents.
