Claims
1) A device comprising means for obtaining measurements of cardiac or pulmonary activity at successive instants in time, memory means for storing said measurements and processing means for identifying in said stored measurements any trend indicative of an abnormal physiological condition.
2) A device as claimed in Claim 1, wherein the processing means are arranged to identify in said stored measurements any progressive increase in the rate of cardiac activity indicative of an impending abnormal physiological condition.
3) A device as claimed in Claim 1, wherein the processing means are arranged to identify in said stored measurements any progressive increase in the rate of pulmonary activity indicative of an impending abnormal physiological condition.
4) A device as claimed in Claim 1, wherein the processing means are arranged to identify in said stored measurements any progressive increase in the magnitude of cardiac activity indicative of an impending abnormal physiological condition.
5) A device as claimed in Claim 1, wherein the processing means are arranged to identify in said stored measurements any progressive increase in the magnitude of pulmonary activity indicative of an impending abnormal physiological condition.
6) A device as claimed in Claim 1, wherein the processing means are arranged to identify in said stored measurements any progressive decrease in the rate of cardiac activity indicative of an impending abnormal physiological condition.
7) A device as claimed in Claim 1, wherein the processing
means are arranged to identify in said stored measurements any progressive decrease in the rate of pulmonary activity indicative of an impending abnormal physiological condition.
8) A device as claimed in Claim 1, wherein the processing means are arranged to identify in said stored measurements any progressive decrease in the magnitude of cardiac activity indicative of an impending abnormal physiological condition.
9) A device as claimed in Claim 1, wherein the processing means are arranged to identify in said stored measurements any progressive decrease in the magnitude of pulmonary activity indicative of an impending abnormal physiological condition.
10) A device as claimed in Claim 2 or Claim 6, wherein the processing means are arranged to identify in said stored measurements any substantially constant deviation in the rate of said cardiac activity from a preset value indicative of an existing abnormal physiological condition.
11) A device as claimed in Claim 3 or Claim 7, wherein the processing means are arranged to identify in said stored measurements any substantially constant deviation in the rate of said pulmonary activity from a preset value indicative of an existing abnormal physiological condition.
12) A device as claimed in Claim 4 or Claim 8, wherein the processing means are arranged to identify in said stored measurements any substantially constant deviation in the magnitude of said cardiac activity from a preset value indicative of an existing abnormal physiological condition.
13) A device as claimed in Claim 5 or Claim 9, wherein the processing means are arranged to identify in said stored
measurements any substantially constant deviation in the magnitude of said pulmonary activity from a preset value indicative of an existing abnormal physiological condition.
14) A device as claimed in any of Claims 10 to 13, wherein the processing means are arranged to identify a trend in the stored measurements indicative of an existing abnormal physiological condition by fitting an equation to the stored measurements .
15) A device as claimed in Claim 14, wherein a linear equation is fitted to the stored measurements.
16) A device as claimed in any of Claims 2 to 9, wherein the processing means are arranged to identify a trend in the stored measurements indicative of an impending abnormal physiological condition by fitting an equation to the stored measurements .
17) A device as claimed in Claim 16, wherein a linear equation is fitted to the stored measurements.
18) A device as claimed in Claim 14 or Claim 15, wherein a measure of the deviation of each of the stored measurements from the equation fitted thereto is used to estimate the likelihood of an existing abnormal physiological condition being incorrectly identified.
19) A device as claimed in Claim 16 or Claim 17, wherein a measure of the deviation of each of the stored measurements from the equation fitted thereto is used to estimate the likelihood of an impending abnormal physiological condition being incorrectly identified.
20) A device as claimed in any of Claims 2 to 9, wherein a measure of the deviation of each of the stored measurements from a mean value is used to estimate the likelihood of an existing abnormal physiological condition being incorrectly identified.
21) A device as claimed in any of Claims 10 to 13, wherein a measure of the deviation of each of the stored measurements from a mean value is used to estimate the likelihood of an impending abnormal physiological condition being incorrectly identified.
22) A device as claimed in Claim 16, as appended to Claim
4 or Claim 8, comprising alarm means for providing an output signal when it is estimated from the fitted equation that within a predetermined period of time the magnitude of cardiac activity will exceed a predetermined threshold value.

5 or Claim 9, comprising alarm means for providing an output signal when it is estimated from the fitted equation that within a predetermined period of time the magnitude of pulmonary activity will exceed a predetermined threshold value.
24) A device as claimed in 16, as appended to Claim 2 or Claim 6, comprising alarm means for providing an output signal when it is estimated from the fitted equation that within a predetermined period of time the rate of cardiac activity will exceed a predetermined threshold value.
25) A device as claimed in Claim 16, as appended to Claim 3 or Claim 7, comprising alarm means for providing an output signal when it is estimated from the fitted equation that within a predetermined period of time the rate of pulmonary
activity will exceed a predetermined threshold value.
