Abstract

A handwriting capture system combines an image capture device (30, 504, 604, 906, 1004, 1106, 1304) such as a PDA, notebook computer, set top box, smart television, or other type of smart appliance having an image capture capability and a built-in wireless transceiver (36, 506, 606, 1306), with an ink capture device (60, 210, 904, 1312) such as, for example, a digital notepad using, for example, electromagnetic, resistivity, or laser digitizing technology and presenting a suitable writing surface such as, for example, a paper writing surface for conventional ink. Communications between the ink capture device and the image capture device is achieved with wireless technology. For image capture devices such as PDAs and notebook computers having built-in infrared ports and designed for personal use, a portfolio (15, 502, 602, 802, 902, 1002, 1102, 1202, 1308) and the image capture device is achieved with wireless technology. The image capture device is mounted on the portfolio with retainer clips (32, 34) or by any other releasable mounting technique so that it may be easily removed and used separately. The image of what is written on the sheet of paper is automatically and seamlessly acquired electronically by the digital image capture device.

45. An apparatus as in any of claims 1-3 wherein the first wireless communications port (1306) is integrated with the structural supporting medium for wireless communications with a remote image capture device (1304).
46. An apparatus as in any of claims 4-10 further comprising a second wireless communications port (40, 44) wired to the ink capture device and integrated with the structural supporting medium for wireless communications with a remote image
capture device
47. An apparatus as in claims 46 wherein the second wireless communications port comprises a radio frequency transceiver.
48. An apparatus as in claim 46 wherein the second wireless communications port comprises an infrared transceiver (40, 44) facing out of the structural supporting medium.
49. An apparatus as in any of claims 45-48 wherein the first wireless communications port comprises a radio frequency transceiver.
50. An apparatus as in any of claims 45-48 wherein the first wireless communications port comprises an infrared transceiver (1304) facing out of the structural supporting medium. oo
51 , An apparatus as in any of claims 45-50 wherein the ink capture device comprises an electromagnetic digital note pad.
52. An apparatus as in any of claims 45-50 wherein the ink capture device comprises a resistivity digital note pad.
53. An apparatus as in any of claims 45-50 wherein the ink capture device comprises a laser digital note pad.
54. An apparatus as in any of claims 45-53 further comprising a navigation area (1310) mounted on the structural supporting medium.
