Description

A FRAME AND METHOD OF CONSTRUCTING A FRAME
FIELD OF THE INVENTION
The present invention relates to a frame and to a method of constructing a frame and, in particular, to a window frame and method of constructing a window frame
BACKGROUND OF THE INVENTION It is common to provide frames such as window frames which are formed of rigid metal, wood or plastics material, these frames including an inwardly facing channel portion for receiving and holding a pane of glass or transparent plastics material Such frames of metal or plastics material are generally formed by extruding metal or plastics material through an appropriate dye to produce a frame member Four such members are then joined together by any appropriate means, for example by screws, to form the window frame To construct a wooden frame, four elongate pieces of wood are shaped, for example by routing, so as to form the desired frame members and the four members are joined together, for example by screws, so as to form the window frame
However, such methods of forming frames are relatively time consuming and the cost of frames formed by such methods is relatively high
The present invention seeks, among other things, to provide a frame and method of constructing a frame which improves on the frames and methods of constructing frames known hitherto
SUMMARY OF THE INVENTION In accordance with a first aspect of the present invention, there is provided a frame, characterised in that the frame includes a channel member of substantially rigid material, the channel member being bent at predetermined fold lines so as to define the frame and the channel member having cut-out portions at predetermined cut locations so as to facilitate forming of the frame when the channel member is bent. In accordance with a second aspect of the present invention, there is provided a method of constructing a frame, characterised in that said method includes the steps of providing an elongate web of substantially rigid material, cutting the web at predetermined cut locations so as to form a cut web having a plurality of cut out portions defining a predetermined pattern, and bending the cut web along predetermined fold lines so as to define the frame, the cut-out portions being located so as to facilitate forming of the frame when the cut web is bent BRIEF DESCRIPTION OF THE DRAWINGS
The present invention will now be described, by way of example only, with reference to the accompanying drawings, in which -
Figure 1 is a diagrammatic plan view of an elongate cut web of material of a frame in accordance with the present invention, the cut web being formed in accordance with a cutting step of a method in accordance with the present invention,
Figure 2 is a diagrammatic cross sectional perspective view of a portion of a bent cut web of the frame in accordance with the present invention, the bent cut web being formed in accordance with a bending step of the method of the present invention, Figure 3 is a diagrammatic plan view of a web suitable for forming a reinforcing member of the frame of the present invention, the reinforcing member being for use with a reinforcing step of the method of the present invention,
Figure 4 is a diagrammatic perspective view of the frame in accordance with the present invention, the frame being constructed in accordance with the method of the present invention, and Figure 5 is a diagrammatic cross sectional view of a portion of the frame shown in Figure 4 including a window pane received in the frame
DETAILED DESCRIPTION OF THE PREFERRED EMBODIMENT
Referring to the drawings, in an embodiment of the present invention a method of constructing a frame includes the steps of providing an elongate web of substantially rigid material shown in phantom at 10 in Figure 1, and cutting the web 10 at predetermined cut locations so as to form a cut web 12 having a plurality of cut-out portions 14 Although the web 10 is formed of rigid material, it will be appreciated that the web 10 is sufficiently pliable so as to bend without breaking when subjected to a bending force The arrangement is such that by cutting the web 10 in the cut locations, first, second, third and fourth web segments 16, 18, 20 and 22 respectively are defined Also defined by the cutting step is a tab 24 extending longitudinally from the fourth segment 22 Following the cutting step, the cut web 12 is passed through bending means so as to form a channel member In this embodiment the bending means is a roll forming device (not shown) which is specifically configured so as to bend the cut web 12 along first, second, third and fourth longitudinal fold lines 25, 26, 27 and 28 respectively and along first, second, third and fourth transverse fold lines 30, 32, 34 and 36 respectively Once the cut web 12 has been passed through the bending means, first, second, third and fourth frame members 38, 41, 43 and 45 respectively are defined The transverse cross sectional shape of each of the first, second, third and fourth frame members is substantially C-shaped as shown in Figure 2 The first, second, third and fourth longitudinal fold lines 25, 26, 27 and 28 form first, second, third and fourth longitudinal edges 40, 42, 44 and 46 respectively of the frame members The complete frame in accordance with the present invention after the bending step is shown in Figure 4 with the first, second, third and forth transverse fold lines 30, 32, 34 and 36 forming first, second, third and forth corner edges 48, 50, 52 and 54 respectively Also shown in phantom in Figure 4 is a reinforcing member 56 which is adapted to locate in a corner portion 57 of the frame Only one reinforcing member 56 is shown in Figure 4 although it will be appreciated that each corner may be provided with a reinforcing member 56 As shown in Figure 3, the reinforcing member 56 is formed from a substantially diamond shaped web 58 The web 58 includes an elongate stnp portion 59 and two triangular portions 60 The reinforcing member 56 is formed by bending the diamond shaped web 58 along fold lines 60 and 61 so that the tnangular portions 60 extend substantially perpendicular to the strip portion 59 in the same direction It will be appreciated that the reinforcing member 56 may be formed by roll forming or by any other suitable bending means Each reinforcing member 56 is inserted into a corner portion 57 after the roll forming step and is configured so as to extend, in use, across adjacent mitre edges 61 of the corner portion 57 to thereby strengthen the corner portion 57 Each reinforcing member 56 may be fixed relative to its respective corner portion 57 by any suitable fixing means, for example by spot welds 62, a nut and bolt arrangement, rivets, tex screws, glue, or by any other suitable fixing means Additionally, further spot welds (not shown) may also be provided along adjacent mitre edges 61 of each corner portion 57
It will be appreciated that the tab 24 serves to bridge a gap between opposite ends of the cut web 12 when the cut web 12 has been bent to form the frame, and that the tab 24 may be fixed to the adjacent first segment 16 by spot welds (not shown) or any other suitable fixing means As shown in Figure 5, a portion of the frame in cross section is shown in use engaged with a window pane 64, the pane 64 being held relative to the first, second, third and fourth frame members 38, 41, 43, 45 of the frame by a rubber member 66. It will be appreciated that the elongate web 10 and the diamond shaped web 58 may be formed of aluminum, steel or any other rigid non-brittle pliable material which is suitable for forming a frame.
Furthermore, it will be appreciated that each frame member 38, 41, 43, 45 may be filled with heat insulating material, for example polystyrene, so as to increase the insulating properties of the frame. Modifications and variations as would be apparent to a skilled addressee are deemed to be within the scope of the present invention.
