Description

APPARATUS FOR PREVENTING THE NORMAL OPERATION OF A CELLULAR MOBILE TELEPHONE
This invention relates to apparatus for preventing the normal operation of a cellular
mobile telephone.
According to the present invention there is provided apparatus for preventing the
normal operation of a cellular mobile telephone comprising, frequency generating
means operable to generate an electrical signal at a predetermined frequency, sweep
control means operable to cause the frequency of the signal generated by the
frequency generating means to sweep at a predetermined rate across a predetermined
bandwidth and antenna means for receiving and radiating the output of the frequency
generating means.
Apparatus in accordance with the invention will now be described with reference to
the drawing which is a schematic block diagram of the apparatus.
It is desirable to prevent the operation of cellular mobile telephones in localised areas.
This may be done with the intention of reducing the annoyance caused when
telephones are used in areas such as restaurants, theatres, cinemas and trains.
The drawing shows a block diagram of apparatus suitable for preventing the normal
operation of mobile telephones operating under various standards such as GSM, EGSM, TACS, ETACS, DCS or UMTS and which is also suitable for manufacture
in a compact unit.
With reference to the drawing, a triangular waveform generator 1 generates a
waveform whose frequency is controllable. An amplitude control circuit 2 receives a
signal from the waveform generator and feeds this to a DC offset circuit 3 which adds
a selectable DC offset to the signal received from the amplitude control circuit 2. The
resulting signal is fed to a voltage controlled oscillator (NCO) 4. Thus the
combination of the components 1, 2, 3 and 4 enables the output of the NCO to be
swept at a predetermined rate through a predetermined range of frequencies having
a predetermined maximum and minimum frequency.
The output of the VCO 4 is fed via an RF attenuator 5 to an RF amplifier 6. The
amplified signal is filtered by a bandpass filter 7 and then radiated via an antenna 8.
The antenna 8 may be selected to have a predetermined radiation pattern and this in
conjunction with control of the radiated power using the attenuator 5 permits the range
over which the apparatus is effective to be selected, for example, to match the interior
dimensions of a train carriage.
The waveform generator 1 may feed multiple transmitter chains 2',2",3',3" etc and this
arrangement may be used to prevent normal operation of cellular mobile telephones which use different standards having different characteristics such as using different
portions of the available frequency spectrum.
The frequency radiated by the antenna 8 may be selected to block control channels of
a particular mobile telephony standard, for example, the broadcast control channels
(BCCH) of the GSM standard. By blocking the downlink control channels, the mobile
telephone is unable to logon to a local base station. The telephone is thus unable to
make or receive calls.
Typically during a logging on procedure, a mobile telephone sweeps across a plurality
of control channels. For optimal operation of the invention, the sweep rate of the
signal transmitted from the antenna 8 may be substantially the same as the sweep rate
employed by the mobile telephone across the control channels.
For mobile telephony standards such as UMTS which use code division multiple
access (CDMA) communication schemes, the apparatus of the invention may be
operated to sweep relatively quickly across a wide bandwidth thereby to generate a
broadband signal which prevents the operation of a UMTS-type telephone.
The signal generated by the VCO 4 is typically confined substantially to a single
frequency. However, by mixing the output of the VCO with noise, the signal which
is swept may cover a relatively narrow "block" of frequencies. It will be appreciated that a suitable choice of VCO 4 will allow one or more of the
attenuator 5, the amplifier 6 or the filter 7 to be omitted. This modification allows an
even more compact and cost effective apparatus to be manufactured.
The waveform generator 1 has been described as generating a triangular waveform.
However other waveforms may also be used.
By suitable choices of radiated frequencies, the apparatus may also be used to prevent
the normal operation of other RF wireless systems such as radio broadcasts, DECT or
television broadcasts.
