Definitions
- the present invention concerns a centrifugal separator with a rotor, which is rotatable a rotational axis and forms inside itself a centrally in the rotor 5 located inlet chamber into which an inlet conduit for supplying of a liquid mixture of components to be separated opens, a separation chamber, which surrounds and communicates with the inlet chamber via a passage but otherwise is delimited from the inlet chamber by means of a departing wall, which surrounds the rotational axis and a centrally in the rotor loca- 0 ted discharge chamber.
- This discharge chamber communicates with the separation chamber at a central portion of the separation chamber, at which specific light liquid component separated out of the liquid mixture during operation is accumulated.
- a stack of a number of frusto conical separation discs which has an inneredge and an 5 outeredge, is arranged axially.
- a part of the departing wall extends axially through the stack of separation discs passing at least half the number of separation discs.
- Centrifugal separators of this kind are frequently occurring.
- a known such a centrifugal separator is disclosed in WO 93/25314.
- the main centrifugal separation takes place in the interspaces between the separation discs.
- the supplied flow is not distributed equally between the different interspaces and consequently the use of 5 them is not optimized.
- the object of the present invention is to accomplish a centrifugal separator of the kind initially described, in which a preferable uniform distribution of the supplied flow in the different interspaces is obtained.
- this is accomplished by the fact that the discharged chamber is formed by the part of the departing wall, which extends in the hollowness inside the inneredges of the separation discs in such a way that the discharge chamber radially outwardly is delimited from the separation chamber by an essentially cylindrical portion of this part of this departing wall and axially is delimited by two annular end walls, which extend radially inwardly from the cylindrical portion at an axial distance from one another, one end wall of the end walls delimiting the discharge chamber axially from the inlet chamber and the discharge chamber communicating with the a central portion of the separation chamber via at least one channel, which has an inlet opening axially inside the stack of separation discs and an outlet opening, which opens into the discharge chamber.
- centrifugal separator makes it possible for the centrifugal separator to be designed with a relatively short radial extension and with flow channels, which along all their extensions forms angles with the rotational axis big enough to prevent accumulations of particles separated in the flow channels, which might cause clogging.
- said part of the departing wall extends through essentially the whole stack of separation discs and is provided with means for radial and polar guiding of the separation discs, at least five per cent of the number of separation discs in the stack are preferably located between the inlet opening of the channel and an axiai end of the stack located closest to the inlet opening.
- the inlet opening of the channel By having the inlet opening of the channel arranged in this way in the departing wall and located axially inside the stack of separation discs the flow through the stack can be evenly distributed in the interspaces bet- ween the separation discs at the same time as the departing wall can give a solid guidance to the stack.
- the separated light liquid component present during operation in the discharge chamber forms a rotating liquid body with a radially inwardly turned free liquid surface located at a certain radial level and the outlet opening of the channel in the discharge chamber is located radially inside this radial level.
- the channel should best be forming a resistance against flow through the same. The resistance means that variations in the flow into and out of the discharge chamber can be reduced, which variations otherwise might cause rotordynamical oscillating problems.
- a centrifugal separator In a special embodiment of a centrifugal separator according to the invention it has a further discharge chamber, which communicates with a radial outer portion of the separation chamber via at least one passage, which is departed from radial inner portions of the separation chamber by means of departing disc the second end wall being constituted by this departing disc.
- FIG. 1 schematically shows an axial section through a part of a centrifugal separator according to the invention.
- the centrifugal separator shown in the figure has a rotor, which has a lower part 1 and a upper part 2, which are kept joined together by a locking ring 3. Inside the rotor an axially movable valve slid is arranged.
- This valve slid 4 delimits together with the upper part 2 a separation chamber 5 and is arranged to open and close an outlet passage between the separation chamber and outlet opening 6 for discharging intermittently of sludge particles, which has been separated out of a mixture supplied to the rotor and accumulated at the periphery of the separation chamber 5.
- the valve slide 4 delimits together with the lower part 1 a closing chamber 7, which is provided with an inlet 8 and a throttled outlet for a so- called closing liquid.
- the valve slid 4 is pressed by the pressure from the closing liquid present in the closing chamber 7 by the influence of the centrifugal force to sealing abutment against an annular gasket 10 arranged in the upper part 2.
- a stack 11 consisting of a number of frusto- conical separation discs between a departing wall 12 and a departing disc 14.
- an inlet conduit 15 extends axially, which conduit opens in the inlet chamber 13, for the supply of the liquid to be centrifugally treated.
- the stack forms a centrally located hollowness 16 surrounding the rotational axis radially inside the inner edges of the separation discs.
- a part of the departing wall extends axially through the whole stack of separation discs.
- On the outside this part of the departing wall 12 is provided with a number of ribs 17 distributed around the rotational axis.
- the separation discs are guided polarly by these ribs.
- the separation discs form them between interspaces, in which the main separation takes place.
- the liquid mixture is supplied to the interspaces via distributing holes 18 arranged in the separation discs and in the departing wall 12.
- the departing wall 12 forms a discharge chamber 19, in which a specific light liquid component separated during operation out of the liquid mixture is accumulated, the cylindrical portion delimiting the discharge chamber 19 radially outwardly from the separation chamber 5.
- the discharge chamber 19 is delimited axially by a first and a second annular end wall 20 and 21 respectively.
- the discharge chamber 19 communicates with the separation chamber 5 via at least one channel 22.
- Two channels 22 are shown in the figure.
- the channels have inlet openings, which are located at a chosen axial level inside the stack 11 , and outlet openings, which are located a chosen radial level.
- a stationary discharge device 23 arranged in the discharge chamber for discharging the specific light component out of the rotor.
- the specific light component forms in the discharge chamber a rotating liquid body with a radially inwardly turned free liquid surface located at a radial level, which is determined by the counter pressure in the outlet channel 24 in the stationary discharge device 23.
- the radial level of the outlet opening of the channel 22 is located radially inside the radial level of the free liquid surface, which means that this radial level will be determining as liquid level in the separation chamber and not the radial level of the free liquid surface in the discharge chamber 19.
- the centrifugal separator shown as an example has an additional discharge chamber 25 for discharging a specific heavy liquid component, this discharge chamber communicating with a radial outer portion of the separation chamber 5 via at least one passage 26, which is departed from radial inner portions of the separation chamber by means of a departing disci 4, which at the same time constitutes the second end wall 21.
- a stationary discharge device 27 with an outlet channel 28 is arranged also in this discharge chamber. This outlet channel 28 and the previously mentioned outlet channel 24 are connected to one outlet each 29 and 30 respectively.
- the centrifugal separator according to the invention shown in the figure operates in the following manner:
- the separation chamber 5 When the centrifugal separator is being started and the rotor is brought to rotate, the separation chamber 5 is closed by supplying a closing liquid to the closing chamber 7 through the inlet 8. As soon as the separation chamber 5 is closed the liquid mixture to be centrifugally treated can be supplied to the separation chamber 5 through the inlet conduit 15. When the rotor have reached the number of revolutions of operation and the separation chamber 5 has been filled up, the components contained in the liquid mixture are separated upon the influence of the centrifugal forces acting on the same. The separation is then mainly taking place in the interspaces between the separation discs in the stack 11 , to which interspaces the supplied liquid mixture is conducted via the distributing holes 18.
- the liquid component of high density which has been accumulated at a radial outer portion of the separation 5, flows radially inwardly through the passage 26 into the discharge chamber 25. In this it forms a substantially cylindrical liquid body, which rotates with the rotor around the rotational axis. This liquid component is discharged under pressure out of this discharge chamber 25 via the outlet channels 28 in the discharge device 26, which is arranged in the discharge chamber 25.
- accumulated sludge particles are thrown out intermittently through the outlet openings either in equal time intervals or when so much sludge particles has been accumulated that a satisfactory separation result no longer can be obtained.
- the centrally accumulated specific light component flows into the discharge chamber 19 via the channel 22.
- the flow can be equally distributed in the interspaces between the separation discs and the departing wall is at the same time able to give the stack a stable guide.
