Description

SCREW CAP WITH APPLIED BUNG Technical field
The present invention relates to a screw cap with applied bung. Background art Caps of the above type are already known commercially. They comprise a cylindrical cup which is internally threaded in order to be screwed so as to close a container (bottle) and is normally provided with a tamper-evident ring which is attached to the edge of the cup and can be cut when the cap is unscrewed from the container. In order to provide hermetic closure of the container, a circular bung made of flexible material is applied to the bottom of the cup and forms a seal against the rim of the container when the cap is applied. In order to retain the bung inside the cap, in the region between the bottom of the cup and the thread there is an annular lip which protrudes from the cylindrical wall of the cup and has an inside diameter which is smaller than the outside diameter of the bung.
The annular lip accordingly forms an annular cavity or slot into which the bung is forced so that its peripheral edge remains engaged in said annular slot. In order to allow the bung to be inserted in the slot, the slot must be significantly larger in diameter and height than the bung. Accordingly, the bung can move on the bottom and remain off-center with respect to the cap, with the risk of compromising the seal against the rim of the mouth of the container. Disclosure of the Invention
The aim of the present invention is to obviate the above-mentioned drawback of conventional caps, providing a solution wherein the bung is always perfectly centered on the bottom of the cap and can therefore ensure hermetic closure of the container. This aim is achieved with a screw cap with applied bung, composed of a cylindrical cup which is provided with an internal thread and with an annular lip which protrudes inward from a wall of the cup, proximate to a bottom of the cup, and forms, together with said bottom, an annular slot, characterized in that it comprises a circular bung having a peripheral edge engaged in said slot and provided with at least one annular ridge which protrudes axially and is centered in said annular lip, said bung being significantly thinner than the height of the annular slot. Brief description of the drawings
Further characteristics and advantages of the present invention will become apparent from the following detailed description of a preferred embodiment, illustrated only by way of non-limitative example in the accompanying drawings, wherein:
Figure 1 is a sectional view of a cap according to the invention;
Figure 2 is an enlarged-scale view of a detail of Figure 1; Figure 3 is an enlarged-scale view of the detail of Figure 2 after application to close a container;
Figures 4 and 5 are views of the cap of Figure 1 in two successive steps of the application of the bung;
Figure 6 is an enlarged-scale sectional view of a detail of a second embodiment of the cap.
Wavs of carrying out the Invention
With reference to Figures 1 to 4, the reference numeral 1 generally designates the cap as a whole. The cap comprises a cylindrical cup 2 which is composed of a cylindrical wall 3 and of a bottom 4. A tamper-evident ring 5 is attached to the cylindrical wall 3 and is internally provided with elements 6 for engaging a collar of the container whereto the cap is to be applied.
The wall 3 is internally provided with a thread 7 by means of which the cap 1 is screwed so as to close the mouth of the container. An annular lip 8 protrudes internally from the wall 3, in the region between the thread 7 and the bottom 4, and is substantially equal in height to the thread 7.
The annular lip 8 forms, in the wall 3, an annular slot or cavity 9 which is blended with the bottom 4. The peripheral edge 10 of a bung 11 is inserted in the slot 9; the bung is constituted by a flat disk and is preferably made of flexible plastic material.
The bung 11 has a smooth and flat face 12 which is directed toward the bottom 4, whereas an annular ridge 14 protrudes axially from the peripheral region of the opposite face 13. The ridge 14 is formed by an outer wall 15 and by an adjacent conical inner wall 16 which is inclined toward the wall 3. The outer wall 15 is substantially cylindrical and its diameter is slightly smaller than the inside diameter of the lip 8. Furthermore, the ridge 14 has such a height, measured at right angles to the face 13, as to protrude with minimal play inside the opening surrounded by the annular lip 8.
The ridge 14 accordingly keeps the bung 11 perfectly centered inside the cap 1, so that when the cap 1 is applied to the container, the outer edge of the rim 17 of the container remains substantially aligned with the conical wall 16, allowing the ridge 14 to lock onto the outer edge of the rim 17 of the container.
Conveniently, the bung 11 has a diameter and a thickness which are significantly smaller than the diameter and, respectively, the axial height of the slot 9 (i.e., than the distance between the bottom 4 and the annular lip 8), so as to produce a play which is sufficient to make it less troublesome to insert the bung in the slot 9 and allow easy unscrewing of the cap.
A main feature of the present invention consists in that the reduced thickness of the bung 11 with respect to the axial height of the slot 9 allows easy insertion of the bung in the slot 9 by means of a central plunger 18, which pushes the bung in the central region of the cap 1 (as shown by Figure 1), and by means of an outer bush 19 which completes the insertion by acting on the ridge 14 (as shown by Figure 5). Advantageously, in the plunger 18 there are holes 20 which are connected to a suction source in order to retain the bung 1 during insertion in the cap.
It should be observed that the pressure with which the cap 1 is applied to the container produces the deformation of the ridge 14 so as to fill the slot 9 and wrap around the rim of the container and thus provide a perfect seal. It should also be observed that the cap is particularly easy to unscrew thanks to flat shape of the bung and of the play which it has in the cup.
Numerous modifications and variations are possible in the practical embodiment of the invention. For example, in addition to the ridge 14 it is possible to provide a second ridge 21 which is located further inward (see Figure 6). The ridges 14 and 21, by being mutually concentric, form a channel 22 which can be engaged by the rim of the container, so as to provide a seal of the rim both at the outer edge and at the inner edge. Another embodiment uses a bung 11 which is capable of constituting a barrier against the penetration of oxygen inside the container. For example, such barrier can be constituted by material which is impermeable to gases, particularly oxygen, such as for example PVDC (polyvinylidene chloride) or EVOH (polyvinyl alcohol) or a layer of aluminum. In a further embodiment, the bung is provided by means of conventional polymers with the addition of so-called oxygen-scavenging substances, i.e., substances capable of trapping oxygen, such as for example sodium ascorbate or sodium sulfite.
