- FIG. 6 on an enlarged scale, a partial end view of a second embodiment of a surveillance device in accordance with the invention.
- FIG. 7 a plan view of a strip only seen along arrow VII in Figure 6;
- Figure 8 a side view of a third embodiment of a surveillance device in accordance with the invention.
- Figure 9 a view seen along arrow IX in Figure 8.
- Figure 10 a plan view of a third embodiment of a surveillance device in accordance with the invention.
- Figure 11 a side view seen along arrow XI in Figure 10.
- FIG 12 on a reduced scale, a side view of a bottle provided with a surveillance device as illustrated in Figures 10 and 11.
- the surveillance device in accordance with the invention is in the form of a tag device, generally indicated by reference numeral 10, which includes a body in the form of a housing 12 surrounded by a circumferential closure frame 14 to which an attachment strip member 16 is joined.
- the housing 12 includes two rectangular associated housing lids or parts 18 and 20, as respectively illustrated in Figures 2, 3, 4, and 5.
- the sealing frame 14 is injection moulded about the housing parts 18, 20 when these have been fitted together.
- the housing part 18 (see Figures 3 and 4) has a circumferential edge 22 with pins 24, 26 in diagonally opposite corners, and holes 28, 30 in the other diagonally opposite corners.
- the associated housing part 20 (see Figure 5) has a circumferential ridge 32 with pins 34, 36 and holes 38, 40 respectively corresponding to and associated with the holes 28, 30 and pins 24, 26 of the housing part 18.
- a signal emitting member 42 is placed into the space 44 defined by the edge 22 of the housing part 18. Thereafter the housing part 20 is pressed onto the housing part 18 so that the two parts lock together by way of their respective pins and holes. Thereafter the housing parts 18, 20 conceal the signal emitting member 42 and cannot be opened without destruction.
- the signal emitting member 42 is an acoustic-magnetic member, such as commercially known under the trade mark ULTRA-STRIP produced by Sensomatic Electronics Corporation. It includes magnetic and resonator components adapted continuously to emit pulses, which can be picked up by scanner devices.
- the attachment strip member 16 has a pointed tip 46 and a number of hooks or ridges 48 sequentially arranged along its length up to the tip 46.
- the tip 46 is insertable into a hole or slot 50 in a rectangular block or plate 52 joined to the frame 14 to form a loop.
- the hooks or ridges 48 allow insertion in one direction into the slot 50 but prevent withdrawal in an opposite direction. Once fitted in loop form the loop has to be cut for removal of the device 10 from an article, such as an article of merchandise.
- the device 10 is attached to an article of merchandise at a convenient position by means of the strip member 16 by forming a loop so that it cannot be removed.
- the signal emitting member 42 inside the housing 12 is scanned and de-activated. Thereafter the article can be carried out of the shopping area through a control sensor gate or zone.
- the cost of the signal emitting member 42 may be high in comparison to the cost of articles of merchandise, it may be economic and useful that chips are only provided in some of the devices 10. A customer would have no way of determining whether or not a chip is located in the particular device 10. Therefore devices with a signal emitting member, which have to be de-activated, may be provided at random.
- the device 10 and its components are made of suitable plastics material, e.g. by way of injection moulding.
- the surveillance device 54 has a housing 56 which is equivalent to the housing 12 of Figures 1 to 5, including the various components, but having a different plate or block 58.
- the block 58 has a slot 60 which, in cross section, is of arrow or V-shape.
- the device 54 further includes a strip member 62 with an elongated strip 64 having a tip 66 and an end part 68 with a slot 70 similar to the slot 60. Its elongated strip 64 has a shape 72 adapted to fit into the slots 60 and 70. This means that only specially shaped strips can be used.
- the shape of the slot 60 and 70 can be varied as required.
- the strip member 62 may be integrally formed with the housing 56 or may be a separate member as shown in Figure 7.
- FIGS 8 and 9 a further embodiment 74 of a surveillance device is shown.
- the surveillance device 74 has a housing 76 which is equivalent to the housing 12 with its various components.
- a block 78 is joined on one side of the housing 76 so that the strip member 80 is insertable to form a loop which is substantially in alignment with the housing 76. This provides for a neat attachment on a substantially flat plane as may be required for particular objects or merchandise.
- This surveillance device 82 has a housing 84 which is equivalent to the housing 12 of Figures 1 to 5 and its various components.
- a block 86 is shown to be attached on one side of the housing 84, the block 86 having a slot 88 to receive a strip member 90.
- the strip member 90 therefore extends substantially at right angles to the elongated length of the housing 84.
- This arrangement is particularly suitable for attachment to bottles 92, such as wine bottles, to be attached around their neck 94 as shown in Figure 12.
- surveillance device 84 housing
