Abstract

By using the inventive method, an ATM-oriented cell stream (zs10) which transmits a continuous bit stream (bs) is transmitted over an ATM communications network (KN), whereby at least two virtual connections (VC11-VC1N) are provided in the ATM communications network (KN). The ATM-oriented cell stream (zs10) is distributed on said virtual connections. Synchronizing cells (sz) are, at least at times, regularly fed into virtual connections (VC11-VC1N). As a result, a high bit rate continuous bit stream (bs) can be transmitted via virtual connections (VC11-VC1N).
