Description

IMPLEMENT PACKAGING
The present invention relates to an implement package and method for making the same. As an object of the present invention to provide a cost-effective implement package including an implement and a carrier, with the implement mounted on the implement carrier in a manner which enables a user to determine the comfort of manually engaging the implement for use.
The present invention is achieved by providing an implement package comprising: an implement to be displayed for sale, the implement having a manually engageable portion to be manually engaged by an individual's hand, the manually engageable portion being engageable by the individual with a preferred configuration of the hand for use of the implement; a carrier onto which the implement is mounted for display, the carrier including a package hanging portion constructed and arranged to enable the package to be hung from a sales rack, the carrier further including an implement engaging portion; and a shrink wrap film shrunk onto the implement and the implement engaging portion of the carrier so as to secure the implement to the carrier without interfering with the individual's ability to engage the engageable portion of the implement with the preferred configuration of the hand for use of the implement, to enable the user to determine the comfort of manually engaging the manually engageable portion of the implement without requiring removal of the implement from the carrier.
It is also an object of the invention to provide a method for manufacturing the implement package of the present invention. This is achieved by a method of forming an implement package comprising: providing an implement; providing a carrier having an implement receiving portion and a package hanging portion; providing a shrink wrap material around the implement and the implement receiving portion; and shrinking the shrink wrap material to secure the implement to the implement receiving portion of the carrier.
Figure 1 is a perspective view of the implement package in accordance with the present invention; Figure 2 is a rear side plan view of the implement package illustrated in Figure 1;
Figure 3 is a rear side plan view similar to Figure 2, but showing the package carrier in a folded condition; Figure 4 is illustrative of the method in accordance with the present invention. Figure 1 illustrates an implement package 10 in accordance with the present invention. The implement package 10 includes an implement 12 to be displayed for sale. In the embodiment shown, the implement comprises a tool in the form of a utility knife. The utility knife shown has a blade extension button 14. The implement 12 has a manually engageable portion 16 to be manually engaged by an individual's hand, accommodating the particular individual's preferred configuration of the hand for use of the implement 12.
The package 10 further includes a carrier 18 onto which the implement 12 is mounted for display. The carrier 18 includes a package hanging portion 20 constructed and arranged to enable the package 10 to be hung from a sales rack. The carrier 18 further includes an implement engaging portion 22 for engaging the implement 12.
A shrink wrap film 26, preferably made from a clear polyethylene terephthalates (PET) material, is heat shrunk onto the implement 12 and the implement engaging portion 22 of the carrier 18 so as to secure the implement 12 to the carrier 18 in a manner which does not interfere with an individual's ability to engage the manually engageable portion 16 of the implement 12 with the individual's preferred configuration of the hand for use of the implement 12. This enables the user to determine the comfort of manually engaging the manually engageable portion 16 of the implement without requiring removal of the implement 12 from the carrier 18.
Figure 2 is a rear plan view of the implement package 10 in accordance with the present invention. As shown, the implement engaging portion 22 of the carrier 18 has an elongated configuration with a width dimension which is generally smaller than a width dimension of the implement 12. This smaller width dimension of the implement engaging portion 22 is connected with an expanded width portion 28 of the carrier 18. This expanded width portion 28 is expanded in comparison with the implement engaging portion 22 and inhibits the implement engaging portion 22 from being removed from between the implement and the shrink wrap film 26. More specifically, in the embodiment shown, the expanded width portion 28 is sufficiently large so that if the carrier 18 is pulled upwardly while holding the bottom of the implement in stationary attempting to separate the carrier 18 from the implement 12, the enlarged portion 28 inhibits such movement. This is in part due to the fact that the particular utility knife shown has a narrowing body as it approaches the forward (top as shown in the figures) portion of the tool. Thus, the enlarged portion 28 meets resistance as it is moved along the corresponding narrowed portion of the shrink wrap film 26, as this shrink-wrap film 26 conforms very closely to the outer configuration of the tool during the heat shrinking thereof.
In an alternative embodiment, it is contemplated that an expanded width portion 28 may extend beyond the lower edge 30 of the shrink wrap film sleeve 26. This would essentially trap the shrink wrap film sleeve 26 between the expanded width portion 28 and the hanging portion 20 of the carrier 18. It is preferred that, even where an implement is provided with a smooth, or regular longitudinal configuration (as opposed to the relatively irregular configuration of the knife shown) , the shrink wrap film 26 will provide sufficient gripping action between the implement 12 and the carrier 18 to prevent significant relative movement therebetween in securing the implement 12 to the carrier 18.
It should be appreciated that in the embodiment shown, the shrink wrap film 26 covers the blade extension button 14 (see Fig. 1) to prevent manual movement thereof. This is particularly desirable in the event that a knife is sold with a operably mounted blade, so as to prevent extension of the blade from the forward end 32 of the implement housing when the knife is in the packaged condition. Preferably, the carrier 18 is made from a cardboard material. Cardboard material broadly refers to paperboard and corrugated board. As shown, the cardboard material is provided with a crease 34. The crease 34 facilitates folding of the hanging portion 20 of the cardboard material, so that an upper portion 36 can be folded downwardly against a lower portion 38 of the hanging portion 20 (see Fig. 3) . Upper portion 36 and lower portion 38 have a generally similar outer peripheral configuration. When the upper portion 36 is folded downwardly against the lower portion 38, the peripheral size of the carrier 18, and hence the entire package 10 is thereby reduced to facilitate shipping of the package 10. As otherwise stated, a smaller size package is easier and less costly to transport .
As also indicated in the figures, the hanging portion 20 of the carrier 18 is provided with an aperture 40 which can be used to hang the package 10 on a sales rack. Figure 4 illustrates the three major components in accordance with the present invention, including the carrier 18, the implement 12, and the shrink wrap film sleeve 26 prior to assembly into the implement package. Figure 4 shows these components before the sleeve 26 is heat shrunk into conformity with the shape of the implement. It should be appreciated that when the pre-shrunk film is heated so as to shrink onto the implement 12, and particularly onto the manually engageable portion 16 of the implement 12 it is simultaneously shrunk onto the carrier 18, and particularly onto the implement engaging portion 22 of the carrier 18. As a result of the heat shrinking process, the shrink wrap film conforms closely to the outer surface configuration of the implement 12. As a result, the shrunk film 26 does not interfere with or alter the natural configuration or shape that an individual's hand would assume when grasping the implement for use. It is preferred that the hanging portion 20 not be surrounded by the shrink wrap film 26, as this would increase material costs and would also interfere with folding the hanging portion 20 along the crease 34, and would further interfere with aperture 40.
While the preferred embodiment of the present invention has been described with an implement in the form of a utility knife, it is contemplated that the principles of the present invention also applies to other manually engageable implements (e.g., screw drivers, wrenches, hammers, garden tools, kitchen utensils, etc.).
The foregoing description and accompanying drawings of the preferred embodiment are merely illustrative in nature. The present invention includes all other embodiments and equivalents that are within the spirit and scope of the described embodiment, and for example, as characterized in the following claims.
